A Dark Matter (2013)
It Teases Us
Sci-Fi and Film Noir is an interesting mix of genres. Terminator did it best, A Dark Matter has done it well too. It's just that the later is a slower ride revolving around darker characters rather than running from a futuristic machine. This is not a simple narrative, that sometimes reaches out to the likes of David Lynch. More recent David Cronenberg comes to mind too. Yet, here in may lie a little problem with A Dark Matter, whereas Lynch and Cronenberg movies massage our entertainment factor with nudity so they can tell their strange stories, A Dark Matter only teases us and still expects us to concentrate on the complex plot. Why don't we see Eve in the buff? This would at least bring some credibility to her somewhat stiff acting. How about the protagonist's girlfriend Laura? (Actually there is one scene where we get a glimpse, but not what we really want). This seems justified considering the amount of sex that moves the plot forward. Perhaps this is from a male's point of view, but I'm probably just saying what's on others' minds.
Skew (2011)
Psychological and Slow but Good
To be honest, I thought this movie was going to be pretty crappy. Lots of mixed reviews on it. Seems like those that like it, really do. Those that don't... hate it. I was very apprehensive and I just didn't want to waste time on another pi**-poor movie. But, I went for it and... I really liked it. This is a unique take on the found footage thing and I think I understand why there's so much backlash to it. Two reasons. One, there's way too many of these films and people are sick of them. I'm almost there. And secondly, it may be too smart for some. Quite frankly, it may be too smart for its own good.
It's this smart screenplay that gives it a 7 in my books. The dialogue is simple. The characters are simple. But the story is interesting because it's not a horror film that relies on what you see on the camera, but what is being said by the characters. It's almost two fold. The filmmakers have gone out of their way to create a story that you care about and therefore characters you care about and that's what makes the horror even more frightening. And it's not blood and gore horror. It's much more psychological. Think Rosemary's Baby. Slow, tense, oozing with substance.
I would recommend only people who want to spend the time solving a puzzle watch this. It's a slow-burn and if you figure it out, it's pretty cool.
