Another Year (2010)
Slow, slow, slow
This film certainly aged me. 2 hours of plodding wooden drama with minimal interplay between the principals and almost no story development at all.
A great sense of relief came over me when the fade to screen indicated that it was over after a penultimate excruciatingly slow morose scene between 2 near mute characters.
My idea of hell would be dinner with the director of this leaden effort.
A totally joyless experience all round, in keeping with most of his body of work.
Thankfully it was half price day at the cinema so we only felt 1/2 cheated of our hard earned cash
End Game (2006)
Disappointing
This movie looked good - good cast, evergreen topic and an explosive opening. It went downhill from there. Why was it filmed by hand held camera? It shakes, judders, part captures scenes and simply confuses the viewer. A poor choice indeed. As if this was not enough, the worst edit in memory assumes a drugged viewer - mandatory if you want to get any enjoyment from it at all. And then it commits the worst sin of all. After leading the viewer down all sorts of unlikely and implausible scenarios to the point of exhaustion, they roll credits without revealing the denouement - the ending - the payoff -like what the heck was the motive? How can you expect to succeed by making thrillers without an ending? Doh! This movie had great promise and ending up doing a face plant in the mud. What a waste of effort. Poor effort by writer and director.
My Flesh and Blood (2003)
Heartwrenching
This excellent documentary showcases the remarkable story of the Tom family. Many of the kids are seriously challenged physically or mentally and others are quite normal and somewhat perplexed at the stresses and strains of living together.
The key is Susan Tom, Mom, who is nothing short of saintly in her commitment to the welfare of her brood and her dedication to their cause.
This is quite the most moving film I have seen in years. The courage shown by her kids in coping with major daily life difficulties is just awesome. It puts our own daily frustrations and challenges into a real perspective compared to the Toms's.
A must see film.
