Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: A Sky Full of Ghosts (2014)
Great Episode
This episode focuses first on explaining light-years. It then changes it's focus by doing a repeat of the calendar year they also did in the pilot, but in a different way.
The also explain the Speed of Light, and other scientific theories. This episode goes into detail of these theories instead of a mere overview.
Then they focus on gravity, and what would happen if the Earth become gravity-less, that in turn would create a black hole.
Then the TARDIS pays a visit to the nearest black hole, Cygnus X1.
Overall a great episode, this gets an 8 out of 10.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: When Knowledge Conquered Fear (2014)
Best Thing You Will See Today
This episode is an improvement over the last one. A must watch.
The first 10 minutes may be a bore, but the episode starts to pick up after that. This episode is mostly about the history of science. It tells us about scientists like Hook, Newton, Halley, Oort and more.
The episode then changes it's focus to how Halley got Newton's book "Philisophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" published.
The whole episode was pretty much dedicated to a tale of friendship between Newton and Halley.
The sense of wonder from the pilot returns in this episode and the final moments(epic) earn this amazing episode a 9 out of 10.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: Standing Up in the Milky Way (2014)
Amazing Intro to a Much-Needed Series
I have recently developed an interest in astronomy. What better show to watch, I thought, than Cosmos by Carl Sagan? I looked it up on this website, and found that a 2014 version has been made, by nobody other than the great Seth McFarlane(no sarcasm intended there).
After watching the first episode, I must say that Neil deGrasse Tyson's narration is great, and has made me really enjoy the show. A great addition indeed.
The episode starts off with Tyson introducing us to his TARDIS, if you will. He takes us from the edge of the Earth, to the edge of the Solar System, the Milky Way, and so on, until the end of the "Observable Universe"(which is not literally "observable"). He then shows us the dawn of the universe to the evolution of animals to the first appearance of the Homo Sapiens, all packed into one calendar year.
Solid stuff.
They show us old stories of the Vatican church killing scientists and commoners posing a threat to their faith a few centuries ago. A great story, but told countless times in countless shows.
The show ends the pilot by telling us about the great works of Carl Sagan and his influence to modern astronomy. I was not born when Sagan passed away, so I have never known much about him. This segment provided me knowledge on Sagan, and much of his research and discoveries.
The show may seem ambitious, but rightly so. If done correctly, this could be a huge influence for youngsters(including me) and make physicist jobs common again.
Exciting moments, stunning graphics, and powerful narration earns this pilot a 9 out of 10.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: Some of the Things That Molecules Do (2014)
Disappointing Episode after a Thrilling Pilot
I earlier wrote a review for the pilot, and I gave it a 9 out of 10.
I may be against this episode because I am more of a Physics guy, and never had much of an interest for Biology. That being said, evolution is a fact. It has been proved correct, and nothing, written in any old "sacred" book, can prove it wrong.
The script is similar to the pilot, without the planets/systems/galaxies/universes/multiverses/bubbleverses mumbo- jumbo. It shows the "Tree of Life", a needless to say, tree which gives birth to all life.
We see how the polar bears and dogs came into existence, this ultimately leads to the discovery that all of us are related to each other(yummy yummy incest).
We then look at the broken branches of the tree, that is, the extinct species. The last of them didn't have a name, which was clever, I think that was reserved for the Homo Sapiens.
In the last 6 minutes, they show us the possibility of life on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. I would like it better if they researched on Europa(moon of Jupiter) or Enceladus(moon of Saturn), as they are more likely for life there than anywhere else(after Earth, that is). Maybe this could be the plot of Christopher Nolan's next movie, Interlunar.
This segment was rather crammed, and I would like it better if they made a whole episode out of this, instead of filler material.
The script, on paper, sounds perfect. But the episode just did not have that feeling of wonder, of excitement, that the pilot had. It could have been much, much better.
Crammed segments, overall dullness, and uninteresting topics earn this episode a 6 out of 10.
WWE Monday Night RAW (1993)
The Best of It's Kind
The McMahons have always been entertaining us with this hybrid TV show, which is always stuck in between the 2 roles of it as a wrestling program,or as it is referred to by non-wrestling fans-a "Soap opera for males"
Many of it's fans do not like the current era of WWE that we are in and they blame the TV-PG rating for it.They miss the days when WWE(or WWF,as it was called at that time.) had a TV- 14 rating and could freely say words that are now either being done with in the scripts or being beeped.
I disagree and say that WWE does not need a TV-14 rating to make the feuds more compelling than they are right now.Good dialogs and catchphrases do not need abusive language in them to put them on every fan's mouth, and shirt. We don't need blood in every single match. We only need them in the most epic matches.
I think the WWE knows what it's doing, which is,hopefully, finding a balance.A way in which they can keep the PG rating and still improve the feuds, the storytelling, and,of course, the quality of wrestling.A way in which it can appeal to the "Let's go Ce-na!" chanting kids and to the Attitude Era remembering "Ce-na Sucks!" chanting adults.
Right now,in early 2014,we are in what is a transitional period between the kiddie era that everyone loves to hate and the forthcoming possible balance.Or maybe the WWE could surprise us by delivering something unexpected,as it always has.
For everything that the WWE has done to entertain us and thrill us,I will give it an amazing 9/10.
