Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A good film in its own right
This film is so much of a copy of the original, but without the cool factor of the original. That one you walk away humming the theme tune or danger zone, this one?
The action is really good, exhilarating and thrilling. The story again is very much copying the original, thus cliched. None of the actors are very likeable, there is no chemistry between them.in all I think this was a sequel that didn't need making and if it did 30 years is far too long I to wait.
Oh and the actors did NOT fly the jets as many seem to think. Though they were in them.
Definitely a film to see in the theatre/cinema to appreciate it more.
False Positive (2021)
What on earth ?
As someone who has been through IVF i thought this might be interesting. This was truly awful. Took ages too get to the vague point and continued downhill from there. Totally predictable and one of the worst films I have seen in a long time.
Bliss (2021)
Misleading trailer and marketing
The trailer and marketing make this out to be some cool sci fi Matrix like film. Halfway through and am thoroughly confused and bored, waiting for the realisation he is in a simulation or something what with all the matrix like yellow "pill" and blue "pill" and it turns out to be about drug addiction.
Even reading various explanations I still didn't understand it. Reminded me of how I felt about Tenet. Both films going out of their way to be too clever and convoluted. This went too far down the "which is the real reality?" rabbithole.
I had to stop watching and just skip to the end.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Very pleasantly surprised
This is the first actually good video game movie. Throughly enjoyed this and it's a good film. Sonic is great and thankfully not annoying, Jim Carey is superb as dr robotnik and the rest of the cast are fine.
It's definitely a kids movie, but plenty of adult jokes in there.
It's not high brow or anything, but it's a fun, amusing and entertaining family movie.
This is how it's done !
Lucifer (2016)
Lightweight in story and writing
This is a very lightweight show with little to no drama, the story is so basic and the writing is predictable and childish.
It looks nice and is pleasant enough to watch. Really its just a bunch of good looking people wandering around being good looking.
Barely even a hint of the main characters actually being supernatural powerful beings.
Its watchable, but it's not going to get your heart racing!
Ashens and the Quest for the Gamechild (2013)
Not bad, but not great
Am a big Ashens fan and also wanted to like this , but the annoying characters and forced humour ruin it. Mr Ashen himself is the only good thing in it.
Ashens and the Polybius Heist (2020)
Good fun for those who know these guys
Definite improvement over the first film and enjoyable to watch.
Must have been good fun to make and film!
Get Carter (1971)
Bloody good film
One of the best British films or at least best British gangster films. Great performances, gritty, dark and a good snapshot of the time and place.
Really well written and a great story .
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Awful but fun
It's pretty terrible but fun. Yes the voice is really bad , it's amusing at times and the first Adam
Sandler film I have actually watched more than 5 minutes of.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Blimey this is bloody great.
Wasn't sure what to expect from this but it's superb. Doesn't take itself too seriously, full of 80s (good) 80s cheese, great characters and it's got a heart. Loving it.
Ad Astra (2019)
What a disappointment
So looking forward to this, promising a cool sci fi film from the adverts. It builds and builds, what's the mystery, what did his dad discover? Nothing. Complete let down. Convoluted journey across the solar system to meet his dad who tops himself within 5 minutes revealing nothing. Magically gets back to his ship just by eyesight , arrives home and that's it. No reveals, no mystery , no closure , no alien contact and no point to it at all
Unexplained moon pirates, unexplained killer monkeys, unexplained reason to go to mars, unexplained sound proof room and what was the point of of Donald Sutherland???? "I am here to accompany you, oh I can't bye!"
Looked gorgeous , nice music and well put together though
Another Life (2019)
Such a disappointment
Take 20 something People from Love island and shove them in a space ship, with ZERO professionalism or teamwork all with emotional issues. Zoom into Sackhoff's concerned face every 5 minutes for 30 seconds at a time. Have an issue of the week. Make sure you include every ethnicity and sexuality too.
Awful! These characters are worse than those in Prometheus!
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
I liked it, but
It was artsy, clever , many layers to it and an enjoyable spectacle, but I will never watch it again. Seemed like it was written to get an Oscar.
He Who Dares: Downing Street Siege (2014)
Please don't watch this - HORRIFIC
I don't know where to begin. The worst film I have ever seen. The acting, the story, the plot, the cinematography, the constant camera zoom ins and the characters are the most awful, amateurish things I have ever seen. They shoot everyone they see and not one person shoots back at them. The special effects are really poor.
It really is cringe worthy at every opportunity. Uwe Boll directing Steven Seagal would be better than this.
I had hoped it would be so bad it's good, but it doesn't even manage that.
I feel broken and empty inside.
The Black Hole (1979)
A childhood favourite
This was one of the first films I saw at the cinema and it has stuck with me ever since. My dad bought me the soundtrack (on vinyl of course!) so I listened to the music over and over again. The haunting soundtrack is now ingrained into me! It's a film that has not aged too well, the acting is pretty wooden in places, the effects are ropey in places, but the overall style and feel (as dreary and depressing as it is) helps to paper over the cracks enhanced with the John Barry soundtrack.
It has some pretty iconic parts to it, Maximillian, V.I.N.C.E.N.T., the Cygnus and even the black hole itself.
All of this aside, I still like it and think its certainly a great film to be remade!
Godsend (2004)
Promised much but failed to deliver
This started off quite good, nicely spooky and eerie, but went downhill until the really poor ending.
The whole film is very disjointed and doesn't flow well at all. There is no real ending or closure to the film either.
The kid in it who is already typecast as the new "spooky" kid in films, is treated like a 3 year old by the parents even though he is meant to be 8 or 9 and is so twee it will make you sick.
Its like the writer got an hour into the film and thought "hmmm i have no idea where this is going, i will just end it here".
Watchable but you wont rush out and buy it.
