True Grit (2010)
Wow, simply WOW!
22 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
As a dyed-in-the-wool John Wayne fan since childhood, I thought no one could do a better job with Rooster Cogburn. Duke, you are my hero, but Jeff Bridges is simply amazing to watch. Almost the same dialog, line for line in some instances, lifted directly from the wonderful writing of Charles Portis's novel of the same name, but given a different, sometimes more sinister twist than Duke's version. In many ways, funnier too. The Coen's took the spirit of the original movie, went back to the source material of the novel and made it better. SPOILER ALERT: This version is a bit truer to the book, the Duke's version leaving out the reminiscence of a grown Matti Ross about her adventure with Rooster and LeBeuf in tracking Tom Cheney and Lucky Ned Pepper. END ALERT.

Thirteen year old Hailee Steinfeld is closer to the age of the heroine (14) than was Kim Darby at 21 and is a much more formidable and determined Matti.

Everything about this film is first rate and each character moves the story along and whether a major or minor role, they are a gem to watch.

Do yourself a favor and see this movie. You won't be disappointed.

Good Saturday Afternoon Action Flick in the 1960s
13 August 2010
I have seen "Flying Leathernecks" countless times since I was a boy. This morning on TCM, it was on again and I almost missed my Saturday morningtee-time with my golf buddies. They were forgiving though, as they, like me, had grown up with the stories of our fathers, uncles and cousins whohad served in WWII and of course, it was a JOHN WAYNE film. You ALWAYS have to stop and watch the Duke anytime he takes on the Japanese. The movie utilizes much Navy combat film from WWII, most of it not of the Guadacanal campaign and the aerial "combat" was typical of most war flicks in the 1940s and '50s. While it has many production errors (not matching recreated action with actual combat footage, reversing damage/wounds on planes and pilots, etc.) it is still a good movie to kick back with and watch a simple story.

Excellent Biopic
5 January 2009
A classic biography made more special by the performance of Robinson. I watched with fascination as he aged and watched with longing for the day when movies like this celebrated scientists, explorers and others who set out to better the lot of mankind. I was also surprised too when they finally mentioned the word "syphilis". I imagine it was shocking to audiences of 1940, just a year after the surprise of Clark Gable's RhettButler telling Vivian Leigh's Scarlett that he didn't "give a damn."

Oh, for the days of movies like this. No CGI, no explosions, no f-bombs, nothing but pure cinema magic and a story about a great person.

Excellent tool for educating the public
12 November 2008
I use this video every semester in teaching an introduction course in criminal justice. Too many students are ignorant of true jurisprudence and this video, written by Richard Schlesinger and the late Ed Bradley , shows three separate trials and the outcomes of each trial as decided by the jury.

The deliberations are straightforward. The cameras were hidden and handled by remote control, but known to the jurors. The entire court system of Maricopa County, Arizona and the Arizona Supreme Court, along with the American Bar Association, were part of the project. It is a fascinating, frustrating and ultimately rewarding look at American citizens at their best.

Interesting if inaccurate
24 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I give this a "6" for the location filming and the police procedural format. The use of relatively unknown actors, save for George Murphy, enhance the film. The story itself is far-fetched, only loosely based on the Rosenthal case of the early 50s. WARNING Spoiler AHEAD: It has a spy master from Moscow entering from a Polish ship in Boston Harbor; a cell of agents already in place, a kidnapping of a refugee scientist and a sea "chase" climax. All in all, if you want to see what Boston looked like in 1952 and enjoy the quasi-documentary film, watch this. Don't expect accurate history, or any history for that matter. If you want to see squared-jawed, All-American FBI agents chasing evil communists, watch "Big Jim McCain" with John Wayne or the "FBI Story" with Jimmy Stewart. Both almost as fictional as this, but each has a more interesting and dynamic story and lead actor.

Awful
8 July 2008
Wow. Found it on Movieplex Echoes of War. Let's see. First the two officers, Agar and Webb, are way too old. The Uniforms seem to be a hodgepodge of Vietnam-era and WWII/Korean War-era clothing. The Germans at first seem to be carrying Gewehr 41(W)semi-auto loaders, but then the German soldier who is watching the "squad" take 10 and shoots the stereotypical young and scared soldier is using what appears to be an early wood-stocked model of the FN91, a post war rifle.

Constant battle sounds that are looped, the American weapons, when they fired, (M1s, M1-carbines, .45 pistols, etc) only fire one round, though semi-automatic. This was due to the film makers evidently not using blank adapters in their weapons. When they show the Americans firing, each fires a round, and then the action cuts to the Germans. As we watch the Germans, we hear intense American firing.

When a German soldier is firing at the squad with an American .30 caliber machinegun, they move to a close up of him as he shakes the weapon and you hear the firing. Funny, he continued to shake as the firing stops then starts again.

I could go on, but after about 30 minutes, I had had enough. I can't believe I wasted so many electrons watching this horrid excuse of a movie.

Great flick for a Saturday Matinée
4 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I remember this as the second of a two part feature on a Saturday afternoon in the early 60s. That was when movie tickets were .35 cents and the loges were 50 cents. Of course, after the lights went out, we'd sneak into the loges.

Since we boys were raised on the stories of our fathers' and uncles' war experiences, it was natural for us to watch these movies. One uncle in particular was a career Navy man and so we knew nautical terminology and such.

It was a routine story with good action sequences. One thing in particular that has always stuck with me after viewing this was when SPOILER: Alan Ladd's character finally starts to shoot the Japanese soldiers. END SPOILER.

A cheer went up throughout the theater and everyone, mostly young boys, were cheering and clapping. Having seen it since, I realize that it is nothing but a routine war picture with little in the way of exploring truly the cost of war to individuals, but it will always have a fond place in my heart from my original viewing oh so many years ago.

An interesting side note. This movie, along with others is listed on an old handbill from the old Parks AFB near Dublin California. The bill is dated 1952. The day and dates are listed of the showings. In checking IMDb, this movie shows as a 1958 release. All of the other titles also show a 1958 release, but in checking the calendar, both 1952 and 1958 the dates all fall on the same days. Weird.

Good action yarn
3 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
While it seems that the premise of this film was based on actual events in the Philippines, it comes across as a good actioner and little more. The movie is enhanced with location filming and, being only 5 years removed from the end of WWII, many of the people in this film served during that conflict. SPOILER: While the end of the movie is pure Hollywood, the cavalry, in the form of the U.S. Army and General MacArthur, riding to the rescue saved the real band of guerrillas, it makes for a tidy, yet abrupt ending to the movie. END SPOILER. For the poster that said the movie was to get the American public ready for Korea, your history is a bit off. The Korean War started in June of 1950, over 3 months before this movie was released and by the time it came out, we were very much involved; the amphibious landings at Inchon, South Korea came in September of 1950. This was not a propaganda movie per se, it was a look back at a time when Filipinos and Americans fought together to defeat the Japanese.

Hollywood needs to take a lesson
27 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
On how to make a good film. This was shot on location, the locals giving it an authenticity that few films, at least those out of Hollywood, can achieve anymore. Sean Bean played his character brilliantly, no histrionics, no speeches, just real life, at least a facsimile of it, captured on film and through the seamless acting of Bean and John Hurt. An excellent murder mystery wrapped up in the politics of an apartheid South Africa. POSSIBLE SPOILER: The actions of the SA police officer tracking the killer and the white farmer seemed, at times, intertwined and almost conspiratorial. The plot unfolded slowly, giving us potential setups for targets for the killer, that were not taken. In the end, it's revealed, maybe, why he was killing. I am lucky I caught it on Movieplex this evening, otherwise I would have missed a true gem.

Good Matinée Fun
23 December 2007
Our daughter dragged us to see this sequel to National Treasure. I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie and this one, while not as original nor as compelling as the first one, does hold its own. I heard many favorable comments after the lights came up. It was a good popcorn movie wrapped in some real American history, but once the wrapping was removed, it was pure hokum, but isn't that what a movie is supposed to be? An alternative to real life? Wouldn't it be amazing if these treasures really existed and were found? But then I'd have to believe in the Illuminati, the Secrets of the Masons, the Da Vinci Code and Al Gore. If you want to be entertained, go see this movie. If you want to be challenged and think deep, critical thoughts about something, take a philosophy class.

Great Sea Movie
16 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished watching this movie again. Filmed just 12 years after the war, it takes place only on two locations. A US Navy subchaser and a German U-Boat. The model work is top notch, though you can tell the live actions from model work, it nonetheless works well. The help of the Navy can't be overestimated. The actors portraying US Navy personnel on the flying bridge while at sea, little in the way of blue screen or rear projection, is what makes this tale stand out. That and the taunt story, crisp direction and thrill of the chase that this movie is. They don't make them like they this anymore, which is sad. Do yourself a favor and rent this movie.

Great story marred by lousy continuity and special effects
16 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A wonderful story, fictional for the most part, of a part of the Pacific War. It takes place in an alternate universe of 1960s hair and dress styles for the women, Vietnam-era jeeps, complete South Pacific airbases of concrete and permanent buildings and model ships from Revell Model Company (or so it seems). That said, I stop and watch all 165 minutes every time it is on. Why? The story itself and the acting in particular lend itself to this flawed epic. It is the run up to battles, not the battles themselves where the tension and high drama are. SPOILER ALERT: If you can suspend belief during the climatic sea battle, you'll do yourself a favor and see a movie with great stars the likes of which we'll not see again.

A good start to a terrible finish
15 December 2007
This was a lame attempt at adapting a great book about a group of cops and the toll their work takes on their humanity. The true humor, pathos and irony that was in the book is missing on the screen. We see the antics described by Wambaugh in the book on the screen, but we don't know why these celluloid cops act the way they do. It could have been a simple matter of a narrator or voice overs by the characters to give some insight into the psyche of these characters. Instead, we are left with the juvenile antics of a group of drunken cops prone to sexual deviance and a disregard for the public, without the public knowing why. Watched it once, I won't waste my time to watch it again.

Gripping, tense and real
13 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie when it first came out. I was in high school and the son of a cop. I later became a cop myself and other than the setting (Los Angeles) this movie, while flawed, shows a side of policing that people rarely see, or at least then. Up until this time, with few cinematic exceptions, police officers had either been comic buffoons or squared-jawed emotionless men who always got their man. Here we have a young man who became a cop to pay for law school. He is introduced to an old veteran who only knows police work, nothing more. Together they become partners then friends. SPOILER: The scene of Kilvinski's (Scott) death is griping, but not unexpected. He was a lonely man who did not have his life (police work) any more. Juxtapose that with Fehler's (Keach)death. His life had hit a bumpy road but was upbeat and hopeful when he died.END SPOILER.

There are no heroes in this movie, but it does show the heroism of these officers going to work and doing their duty as best they can under trying and sometimes deadly circumstances. A good movie but a better book. If you have a chance, read all of Wambaugh's novels. He nails police work as it was in the 60s and 70s.

Bad, but not as bad as Pearl Harbor!
20 November 2007
A very Japanese movie with Japanese sensibilities. The special effects were good, but wrapped around a movie that appeared to have been filmed in a warehouse district half the time and on a paper mache island the other half. Hokey dialog dubbing, American servicemen cheering the breathless announcement of an aircraft able to defeat the Zero (while wearing muttonchops, long hair and moustaches), etc., etc. I could go on, but this is like watching a train wreck; you just can't keep your eyes off the inevitable disaster this movie is. At least there is no attempt at pomposity disguised as grandeur that was Pearl Harbor. However, the film maker's attempt is an honest one; one that is silly to a western audience, but a serious attempt nonetheless. If given the choice of watching the Michael Bay version of Pearl Harbor-lite and this, I'll watch this.

A tribute to those who were "expendable."
25 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a Saturday afternoon TV staple for kids who grew up in the 1950s and 60s. I remember watching it as a kid and being bored with the "adult" stuff and wanting John Wayne and company to sink "Jap" ships and win the war. It was only later, as I matured and had did a stint in the service myself that I revisited this movie. Made as the war was ending; it is a sentimental, but hard look at the early days of the war in the Philippines. Ford masterfully weaves the personal stories into the bigger picture of the onslaught of the Japanese machine through the Philippines. SPOILER ALERT: The scene of the old man not wanting to leave what he had built with the strains of "Red River Valley" playing in the background and him sitting with a rifle and looking down the road where the Japanese army will surely come, is a powerful image of the hopelessness that must have pervaded many at that time. An excellent movie and one that should be on anyone's list.

Excellent Submarine Movie
31 January 2007
The interaction between Gable and Lancaster is something to behold. That and the story, the tension and the realism of men under attack. Yes, the special effects are not to the "high" standards of today, but they serve the story well and do not detract from the important drama. As one poster said, this movie would be ill served in color as would Das Boot in B&W. An overall excellent adaptation of the book and as far as the points not explained, all the better. I hate movies that stop the action to then explain to a character what that character is about to experience/see/do, etc. Give the movie goer credit for being able to fill in the gaps. A must have for any WWII movie collection.

Excellent for introducing...
27 January 2007
...people to WWII history. My uncle, a career Navy man and on the USS Enterprise on December 7th, 1941, said that this movie version of the TV show was good in depicting the war, as he saw it from the deck of a ship in the South Pacific. Of course there was no musical accompaniment nor profound moments; combat is hours of boredom coupled with minutes of sheer terror. What you are seeing, with a few minor exceptions, is actual footage from the battles described. It is a well-produced and good look at what our men, and those of our allies and even enemies faced in WWII. It is emotional, it cannot help to be, given the subject matter. A good, solid introduction to WWII history.

THIS should be a movie
14 January 2007
Of all of the TV shows of the past made into movies that stink, maybe, just maybe, some young, serious minded script writer will stumble upon this on late night TV somewhere and produce a script for a motion picture version.

No MTV style quick cuts, no gangsta rap, no tricked up CGI, except as needed. Keep the seriousness of the Quinn Martin original and turn it loose. This was an amazing series, especially for a 12 year old, coming as it did, at the height of series of UFO sightings and reports during that time period.

The whole concept was chilling. This would be a good movie, or even better, a new series, keeping in line with the original.

Bleak, funny and tragic
10 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I was rolling through Comcast's "free movie" selection and found Noi there. Having been stationed in Iceland over 30 years ago, I have found a continuing fascination with all things Icelandic. I started to watch this movie when I had many other things to do. I was hooked by the starkness of the terrain, like I remembered it. Then the story hooked me more. What teenager couldn't relate to the utter boredom of life in their hometown? Whether in New York City or in a small village in Iceland, teens almost universally feel isolated and alone, even in the best of circumstances.

That is not what Noi had. His obvious loving grandmother and his confused but caring father were not enough. He is isolated, alone in more ways than his youth. Intelligent beyond measure, a petty criminal, a dreamer.

This movie speaks to anyone who felt isolated and alone in their teen aged years. The ending was unexpected, but it added to Noi's isolation. SPOLER ALERT: As the list of the dead are read, watch Noi's eyes. They say volumes about what he is thinking.

A cheesefest for the historically ignorant
26 August 2006
I have been trying to sit through this bloated, ignorant and horribly acted movie for the past few hours. Since when do Army Air Force officers amble onto a Navy ship to watch a shipboard boxing match? Since when did active duty USAAF officer leave the US and fight for Britain, while still on active duty and the USA officially neutral? Since when did P-40s turn, twist and do aerobatics that out maneuvered the Japanese Zero, probably the single most nimble aircraft in the early part of the Pacific war? I could go on, but the music was ever present, the camera movement made me reach for an airsickness bag and the thought that kids today think this is what really happen at Pearl Harbor is sad. A stupid, stupid movie.

Don't watch for production values
17 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
If you are looking for a rousing sea tale and men against the sea, don't bother. However, if you want to learn about a ship whose crew was an experiment set up to fail and their efforts that succeeded against all odds, then please watch. It is a simple tale really, told with great passion by the late Ossie Davis, himself a veteran of WWII.

I'm sure it would have been more exciting with Jerry Bruckheimer loud and overblown production values and CGI effects; that would have added nothing to this heartwarming true story.

SPOILER ALERT: At the end, you get to meet some of the real men of the USS Mason, DE529 through a reenactment of a Navy award ceremony over 50 years late and through actual footage of the new USS Mason at a port-of-call in NYC in 2003. END ALERT.

This is a tale about honor, sacrifice and family and how it overcame bigotry. It is a tale that does not end, but must be worked on by each generation. And to those that complained about the shameful history of the US, some of it is, and some of it is glorious, like these men and their ship.

Excellent look at British and ANZAC troops
2 July 2006
I haven't seen this gem in almost 20 years and AMC presented it today. An excellent look at the British war effort against the Germans and Italians in North Africa. Except for the minor mistakes of weaponry (American made Thompsons in the hands of Germans, Colt M1917 water-cooled MGs for German MGs, etc) this was a realistic and rousing tale of the North African campaign. Of course Hollywood liberties were taken, it is a movie, not a documentary. The interplay between Richard Burton and Robert Newton was excellent, with Newton's performance the proper balance for Burton's sometimes hysterical scene-chewing. That is is based loosely on real events and in many cases ANZAC and British troops did hold back Rommel's attacks many times only enhances the story. Kudos to the makers and an excellent addition to any war movie collection.

About my hometown
22 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A delightful little movie about my hometown. I also was a cop for many years there and watched many people I know or know of interviewed. First the problems. When they wanted to show modern, multi-story buildings, they traveled 5 miles west and videoed a business park in Dublin, CA. Other than a few shots like these, they make a nice little film about Livermore. The absurd search for the time capsule, which any 1st grader would have known to look under the totem pole, was stretched out too long. However, the curse of the totem maker against the sewage system after some careless workers cut off part of the totem, is right on. For years, parts of town suffered from storm run-off flooding and other problems. Whether due to the curse or poor planning on the part of the city (which is what I suspect), it makes for a good story. Maybe the curse wasn't against the sewer system, maybe it was to perpetuate the planning snafus that city hall is known for.

All-in-all, a fun and harmless look at my hometown.

What my son experienced
15 March 2006
I'm not a Marine. I was in the Air Force 35 years ago. The first moments of this documentary brought me back to my first few hours basic training with all of the confusion, fear and yelling. However the Marines have the toughest boot camp of any branch of the military and after the first few moments, my memories faded and I watched what my son went through last year to become a U.S. Marine. Poignant, funny, frightening and ultimately triumphant, this video is a must for anyone who has been in the service, is contemplating going into the service or just wants to understand the journey a young man takes to become a Marine.

Everything the DIs do is for a reason; though to the recruits, it doesn't seem like it. This documentary catches the day-to-day training and teaching that goes on.

It shows the recruits at their worst, and at their best, as they try to navigate the course from civilian to Marine. It captures the DIs too in moments where they are "off," talking among themselves to watch a recruit in need as well as when they are on, screaming to the point of incomprehension, trying to get a recruit to learn. This video is well worth the time to watch, if for no other reason than to understand where a Marine comes from. The only fault I had with this was in not identifying the different recruits and what they were in the platoon. That aside, an extraordinary look at MCRD San Diego.
