Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
The worst marvel movie
Movies with real stories like "Hidden Figures" about African americans contribution to science is the standard of empowerment and truth I want to see...not wars over fictional countries hoarding fictional metal/tech. I was disappointed even at the film process as the lighting was terrible in so many scenes and the fight scenes lacked any quality/logic. The blue people made it feel like avatar and silly. The writing is simply forced, contrived, and lacks logic. I did not like ANY of the characters. The only tolerable part is the villain and he is weak and unremarkable. Similar to "aquaman" the lesson of under water heroes/ villains being the worst needs to be learned by studios. "The boys" tv show even makes fun of this very well. This movie moves the marvel ball very little to a large collab movie when compared the way previous marvel phases built off each other into "endgame". 2/10.
The Ark (2023)
Embarrassingly bad 2/10
How did this script get green lit? This show insults the audience with how much they spoon feed yet also tries to also make them feel smart as the characters are impossibly stupid for the best of the world. There are so many times I paused to point out plot holes or to complain about the dialogue/scenario...I went in excited for the show and it is clear sci-fi has a flop on their hands. Cast charismatic people and create 3 dimensional characters...not tropes. The chemistry falls flat and I care about none of them. The plot seems predictable and forced. Go watch " the last of us" instead. 2/10...
Underwater (2020)
Waste of your time
This combination of Terrible dialogue, unlikable characters, poor cinematography, and bad acting made this one of the worst films I ever have seen. Kristen Stewart is simply a BAD actor and can NOT carry a movie. The editing did not set up the scene at all so any jump "Scares" had little impact and left us seeing half shadows. The characters were forgettable and the monsters poorly done. I was hoping for some cthulu level horror but instead there was just a weak premise that felt like a half baked "alien" rip off with little to no science/logic. I am surprised that this script was green lit at all. 2/10 a complete waste of your time ...
After Life (2019)
Season 2 was just what I needed.
While the show is dark and absurd It still manages to be beautiful and make observations on the human experience that transcend. Season 1 builds the characters while season 2 let's them shine. I can not wait for season 3!
Come to Daddy (2019)
9/10 a wild ride for a specific audience
It is not often that you get great actors, solid dialogue, and real drama from a horror movie but "come to daddy" managed to bring all this and more. Elija Wood was amazing. This film has some violent scenes and uses harsh language so I would not take your parents to see this. I saw this in Alamo Movie Theater in a sold out theater and everyone enjoyed it.
1917 (2019)
9/10 Perfect Cinematography
The cinematography makes you feel like you are in the trenches with the actors. It is a moment to moment edge of your seat movie with suspense and action. This is 100% worth the theater experience.
Vinland Saga (2019)
A must watch 10/10
This is for long time anime lovers, people trying anime for the 1st time, and people who like History, drama, action, or the fantasy genres. This became my favorite anime of all time.
Elton John: Rocket Man (2017)
A let down
Skip this unless you were a die hard elton john fan. Why? Because the story is poorly executed and Elton comes off unlikable. The film plays out like a musical and falls back on surreal shots to make its point rather then showing hard hitting scenes. The camera angels and lighting are good but the acting is nothing to write home about.
Levius (2019)
Worth the watch
I went in with low expectations but this unique sci-fi sport anime in a post war world managed to grab my attention and not let go. I binged it all in 2 days. I want at least 2 more seasons of this show.
The Two Popes (2019)
It's on Netflix. Watch it.
This is not a propaganda film. You can and should watch it. The acting alone should bring you to the table. Being on Netflix makes it accessible. I am an atheist and enjoyed it.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Dark comedy with a heart
JoJo is my 2nd favorite movie of 2019. The director is brilliant. Every actor is likable or does a great job playing a villain. Scarlett Johanson and her child's relationship with make you laugh and cry. It exposes propaganda and puts real faces on the cycle of hatred taught to people that still exists today. This is a must watch.
Yesterday (2019)
Skip this
This movie is a trap to Beatles fans. Save your $ and don't waste your time. This movie really is just a poorly conceived romance movie with cover music that managed to completely miss the point the impact "The Beatles" had on society.
Bombshell (2019)
A must watch
This under rated movie is a must see. The acting and story took this real world story to a whole new level.
The Farewell (2019)
A must watch
The unique story, acting, and direction made this one of my top 5 favorite movies of 2019.
This is 10 times better then the movie "Little Women".
Little Women (2019)
Overrated
This adaption has better costumes, locations, and cinematography then the past adaptions of this classic book. The main problem is this adaptions writing and casting did not hit home like the other did. The actor who plays Joe is not as likeable. The actress that plays Amy was too old. The actor who played Laurie was way to young. They made weird choices with the Beth character. I was in tears with past versions and found myself yawning at important moments in this movie.
Dracula (2020)
Waste of your time. 5/10
Dracula is a crutch used by weak writers to get a built in audience. A good writer can take vampires and elevate them to the next level as was the case with "interview with the vampire". This retelling of a classic we all know with forced modern twists managed to be both predictable and simply eye rolling. People who love the classic will hate this and those that like the modern take will be let down. The shots/lighting are good and I dare say there are 1-2 amazing shots per episode but if Netflix is going to spend a lot of $ to make content and I am going to spend hours of my life then I demand a better story then this. I finished this so that you don't have to.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
10/10
"Spiderman Far from Home" is well written, containing the perfect blend of character building, humor, romance, and action. Every character is likable (even the villains). Those audeince memebers that do not know the comics will get a great twist. There is also an amazing post credits scene. It is 100% worth seeing this movie in theaters.
I Am Mother (2019)
Don't let the reviews fool you, This is a waste of your time.
Good cinematography, a cool robot, and an impressive set can NOT make up for a BAD script. Hilary Swank was a terrible choice for this role and is painfully unlikable. A likable up and comer actress should have been chosen instead. Clara Rugaard does a good job as "daughter" with the material she was given but "mother" (the robot) steals the show and when a robot is your best actor there is a problem. This movie borrows too many ideas from far superior sci-fi movies. I suggest Netflix find better material to make and suggest anyone considering watching this choose something else as netflix has better material on it's platform that is worth your time.
The Society (2019)
There is better content out there. 5/10
I binged this in a weekend. What seperates this from being a rip of reimagining of "Under The Dome"/"Lord of the flies" for better or for worse is the fact they are all high school students in a unique sci-fi premise. This problem with this particular sci-fi-fi premise is it leaves more questions then it answers (which is terribly unsatisfying). The show has moments that are captivating (mostly at the end of the ep as bait for you to continue binging) yet the show is filled with plot holes, frustrating characters, and forced melodrama so I don't think it's worth it. The shows cinematography is good which just proves Netflix needs to pick better storylines. There is better content out there. (Try the show "Dark" instead.)
Revisions (2019)
6/10 There are better animations out there and more importantly better storylines ...
I love Anime and want Netflix to make more of it so I always give it's originals a chance. This anime loses a lot of anime purists by having 3D characters in a 2d backdrop. Other 3D anime's by Netflix have had excellent storylines so they managed to get good reviews despite of themselves. The problem with this anime is it's story. "Revisions" is a mecha anime with a time travel premise that rarely lives up to it's potential. The dialogue is lacking as the protagonist incists all the time on the idea that he will be the one to save everyone. I am all for the protagonist being a hero...but it almost feels like the subtext is simply him shouting "I am the protagonist" rather then their being depth to the character or him actually being that heroic. The supporting characters at their worst are each annoying for their own unique reasons and at their best moments they are just cookie cutter cliches of the anime genre. Netflix needs to make better choices on what story to animate. Simply said there is much better content out there that you should watch before you even consider giving this a chance.
Gut (2012)
A slow burn indie film about two friends dealing with their dark & depraved desire to watch a DVD that was left in the mailbox of a real murder.
"Gut" is a unique New York Indie Horror Film that is unlike anything you have ever seen. Tom (Jason Vail) is a father & husband caught in a dead end pointless job with his immature childhood friend Dan (Nicholas Wilder.) We share in Tom's resentment towards everything in his life, including the people around him. Dan, on the other hand, has a child like sense of wonder at his own lack of responsibility. The viewer will find themselves liking/relating to either Tom or Dan but will end up knowing them both intimately. Dan surprises Tom with an offer to see a new horror film that was left in his mail box. Their childhood love of horror films causes them to relish in this eerie & unexplained snuff video. This secret indulgence causes tension in all of Tom's relationship including with his wife Lily (Sarah Schoofs.) The violence & twisted story line is so tastefully done, it will make the viewer feel like a voyeur as well for watching this film & especially for wanting to watch the snuff video in this film. It is a slow burn horror story that twists are view of what a horror film actually is. It is not a slasher or gore picture but contains disturbing images & ideas that putting it mildly are not for the faint of heart. "Gut" is definitely worth the watch, if you are a true horror fan.
