The author ruined her story
22 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the movie, but the girl dying ruined the entire story for me. What was the point? This lonely, ostracized boy finally finds a friend, with whom he invents a way to cope with the daily heartache of ten year old life, only to lose her, ironically, via the bridge that inspired the fantasy land that made it all possible? Was the author TRYING to torture children? Or perhaps she was trying to make them afraid of ever doing anything on their own, for fear that their best friend might DIE if they don't bring her along on every single outing. (I know, I know. She wrote the book for her son, whose best friend died. How this story made him feel better about it is beyond me.) Forgive me, but I feel that movies and books for children should show peril and frightful scenes; however, in the end, everything should turn out OK. These are kids. Kids need to feel safe and secure. They do not need to know that they can lose their best friends to unexpected freak accidents the one time that they choose to go off and do something solo.

Arizona (2004)
Ouch!
22 July 2006
Here's a riddle for you: What has the look and feel of a really bad, early 70s horror flick but is actually a boring, nonsensical piece of cinematic trash? Answer: Arizona.

I can't believe I ordered this awful junk from On Demand. I also cannot fathom how such a low budget, no-name film even got on a pay per view list in the first place. The movie makes absolutely no sense. You're constantly waiting for something to happen but all that does happen is that the plot (or lack thereof) drags on and on without any direction. Catch it on late night cable if you're having trouble sleeping and have run out of Ambien.

one of the worst ever
22 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has to be the worst piece of utterly ridiculous and predictable nonsense that I have ever seen. Its so bad that it actually has comic appeal. The real disaster here is that Hollywood actually spent $125 million on this monstrosity and wasted the talent of actors such as Denis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal. I wonder how they were able to keep a straight face while reciting the idiotic lines for this junk. I am personally insulted that Hollywood apparently believes that us "little people" are so naive that we could actually fall for this propaganda. And just where do they get the idea that a new ice age could be brought about by global warming as a result of us using up our natural resources and creating too much pollution? While I am environmentally conscious myself, we cannot ignore that the last ice age occurred thousands of years ago, well before there were cars or anything else polluting the environment. Put this movie on the shelf with Plan 9 From Outer Space and the rest of the Golden Turkeys.

Levittown a hick town? Not!
17 November 2004
Re: Zen Bones' commentary about Levittown being a "segregated" community with "no blacks, Asians, gays, Hispanics or Arabs" living in it:

While Levittown was initially conceived as a segregated development, much has changed in fifty years. This town is now a culturally diverse community. Many Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians, and Arabs make their home here (visit one of Levittown's three high schools and see for yourself.) It is also important to note that this "isolated, limited, small town community" is 20 minutes from the New York City line and 40 minutes from Manhattan. There are four large universities within a 10 mile radius, one of which boasts a major metropolitan law school. It is five minutes from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which is the Long Island equivalent to Madison Square Garden. It is a shame that the film chose to portray Levittown as a culturally dead hick town that has never heard of the civil rights movement.
