Trainspotting (1996)

If you liked Requiem for a Dream, you're probably going to like this

This movie reminded me of Requiem for a Dream. I'm not implying that one movie copied the other, nor am I implying any negative connotations. Just simply noticing the similarities. It had very interesting depictions and point of views of what one with a drug addiction might encounter. The story, at times, can be very emotional. There were also times where what was going on was creepy or strange, with intentions of making the viewer catch a glimpse of the protagonist's world. A job well done on that as well. The directing, writing, and acting were all exceptional. This movie is an emotional ride-along with the protagonist, which was, to say the least, insightful. Going back to the aforementioned movie, Requiem for a Dream; if you liked that, it's almost guaranteed you're going to like Trainspotting.

Very creative regarding some aspects, which made it interesting

Being a comedy, the movie did get points knocked off for not being very funny, but, seeing as it's a drama/romance, it had a chance to redeem itself. Putting the seldom appearing silly jokes shown in the movie aside, the movie had a very original story, using a cliché plot, which sounds confusing, but it works. The drama was heartfelt, and the romance was shown in a different and unique way, having similar scenarios to other movies, to a portrayal one would see in other movies. The story itself was pretty impressive, referring to the backstory of the protagonist mostly. I liked how it all tied up well, and the message was one that doesn't appear in a lot of movies, which was also something nice to see. One big thing that I really didn't like about it was that it got very dull at certain points, and those points were not rare. The movie became less enjoyable because of that factor, but, nonetheless, it's a piece of art (if you've watched the movie you'll get my reference).

Good idea, but not executed well enough.
6 September 2014
I had heard a couple of opinions on this movie, and they were both very positive, so I naturally assumed this movie was going to a great low- budget movie. Well, while it wasn't great, merely alright, it was disappointing. My first impression was that two of the three teenage protagonists were brats. The movie gradually works into wanting you to have empathy for the characters, but I couldn't be as empathic as the story had potential for me to be, seeing as the reason the characters moved out into the woods was completely stupid, or at least it seems so from the examples of their parent's behaviors on screen. Apart from that, I found this movie to be more than a tad bit sexist, especially in the daydream scene. There is no reason for the "becoming a man" references, and that indirectly added to the sexist aspect I was referring to. I found it to be plainly silly. The acting is good, but then again, the roles weren't exactly demanding. The movie is a comedy, but it's not really that funny. There were a few jokes which actually made me laugh out loud, but, for me, around 65% of the material was just thrown in there because the writers felt like there weren't enough jokes. Although, the effort on everyone's part is admirable, and that's partially why I can appreciate this movie.

Premature (2014)

Not original, but definitely funny and entertaining
6 September 2014
To sum this movie up in one word: entertaining. Even though it's a mash-up of Groundhog Day and American Pie, meaning it lacks originality, and has one of the most cliché "plot twists" of all time, it's still oddly hilarious. The movie is enjoyable if you're watching it with friends, or just sitting at home alone. I really liked the actors, even if the acting wasn't great. It was good, just not great. The jokes are funny;90% of them at least, and it's my kind of humor, so the likability of this movie will vary for each person based on what your kind of humor is. If you liked American Pie, you're probably going to like this movie.

Astounding

The movie was spectacular. The trilogy cannot be described in any word nor any string of words put together to form a phrase or anything else. It was unbelievably impressive. Starting with the movie, once again, the acting was phenomenal. The emotion evoked and the empathy one feels for the characters is truly sincere. It's amazing at how a movie can be four hours long, yet not feel as if it was more than three, or two and a half. The visual effects are incredible. The trilogy as a whole is unbelievable; marvelous; stupendous; phenomenal; you understand what I'm getting at. It is a true tale of friendship and love. It's an adventure all throughout; not only for the protagonists, but the viewers. The effort put into the whole thing is just shocking. Each movie was released one year apart of the other, and they're all over 3 hours long. The script is great and so is the directing, and everything else. There is no way this trilogy can disappoint. Definitely worth the eleven hours you put into watching it.

Amazing

The Lord of the Rings does not fail to impress. I loved it all. I don't have as much to say for this one as the last one, because it's a continuation of the same story, but I will try. The acting, once again, was phenomenal. The comic relief, even though it appears in the midst of serious dilemmas, is still really funny, and well done. The tension comes and goes when it is needed, and when it is necessary. The camera work is great, and the final battle scene is just super epic! You know a battle scene is good when it lasts half an hour and you don't get bored of it. I can't wait to watch the final movie of this trilogy, but I'm also shocked at the fact that it's four hours long! It's really impressive how a single trilogy can be eleven whole hours long.

Shockingly phenomenal

I went into it not really knowing what to expect, and I came out of it knowing it exceeded any and all my expectations for it. The story is brilliantly thought of, and the writing is just as well. There were no completely unnecessary lines or addition of silly details just to show off the depth of this new world. Everything fell into place very well. The acting was excellent. The actors excelled with their performances, and did not fail to not only entertain, but to impress their audience. I loved how there was always some sort of comic relief in serious or tense scenes. The reason I liked it so much is because it was subtle, and the screenplay writer didn't just drop a huge sign saying "comic relief" in the middle of a serious scene. What really impressed me though, is that the movie not only offers imagination, tension, and a few laughs, it also offers emotion. There's always an unexpected twist to make things more interesting than they already are. There is nothing this movie doesn't have!

This movie is a mockery of human knowledge, intelligence, and understanding.
6 September 2014
From beginning to end, this movie was absolutely ridiculous. Even before I watched the movie, I knew it was going to be a horrible movie, but I decided I'd do it because some of you guys would probably be interested in a review, so here it is. The fundamental idea at its most basic level can bring forth a very interesting concept, such as what the movie Limitless did. What I saw in this movie was an infinitely worse version of Limitless. Luc Besson, the writer and director, took this very simple concept, and not only did he try, unsuccessfully to overcomplicate it to sound smart, but he tried to use a trick on the audience, by introducing a few sciency sounding terms and keeping the viewers interested by their, ironically, lack of knowledge. The path he chose the movie to take, from the fundamental concept, made the whole idea absolutely, and hilariously, absurd. Firstly, the "fact" that humans only use 10% of their brain's capacity is a myth. We use 100% of our brain's capacity, just at different times, for different actions. Secondly, the idea that humans, or anything, for that matter, are able to control things that are physically unreachable on a subatomic level, such as time, is just stupid. And for any questions regarding time travel: time travel doesn't work with simply "moving" time. You bend spacetime to reach a different destination. You're bending particles with energy; not magically leaping through time. This movie completely disregarded any and every basic law of physics. Moving on to the acting, it was the best acting I've ever seen in my life… not really. The acting was actually very bad. I didn't expect much from Scarlett Johansson, and I got even less from her. Since she was basically the only important of the movie, I'd say the general acting was bad as well, seeing as no one else had any significant roles, except for Morgan Freeman, whom didn't have many lines either. The metaphors were completely unsubtle, and pretty much threw themselves at the audience's faces and screamed "WE'RE METAPHORS." Also, I'd like to point out that it's literally impossible to portray a character infinitely more knowledgeable in a movie, seeing as the "research" put into said movie would come from other sources. So, unless the writer would be the Nikola Tesla of our time, it'd just be a poor attempt, and excuse, for a movie introducing a "new concept" which is revolutionary. It's predictable down to the last detail. I'm not even kidding. It's an extremely predictable movie. The director/writer is, from what I gather, not a very intelligent man, and movies like these should be left to people who: a) are intelligent, and b) actually know what they're doing. This movie was just a mockery of human intelligence and understanding as a whole, not to mention and indirect mockery of anyone who thinks it's good.

Godzilla (2014)
4/10
I'd rather watch paint dry.
23 May 2014
It was a horrible experience having to go through with watching the movie. I absolutely loathed it. I went into the cinema with high expectations and came out with a frown. There was no character development, no real plot, except for the U.S government (more so the navy/army) attempting to stop a malevolent creature. Godzilla is portrayed as a hero in this movie, and I have to say, I greatly disliked that. I actually hated the fact that they added more creatures. I deemed it to be completely unnecessary and a pathetic attempt to change things up from the original plot. I couldn't wait until the movie would be over. It had no theme either, which is amongst the most important elements of a movie. The acting was below average, and Bryan Cranston's role in the movie was over-exaggerated in the trailers. I thought he would have been the star, but instead, Aaron Taylor - Johnson appeared as the star. It's extremely predictable, and is nothing better than a bad action movie made only for the shock in the viewer. They didn't even do a good job with that.

Non-Stop (2014)

Did its job perfectly
30 April 2014
The point of 99.99% of all (primarily) action movies is to keep the viewer entertained, at the edge of his/her seat and keep them guessing. This movie achieved all of those goals perfectly. Liam Neeson was, once again, amazing as the role of Bill Marks. The acting was generally fantastic. My friends and I had no complaints with the script, except for literally two lines, which came off as a tad cheesy, but that's nothing. A definite must see movie, especially if you love action themed movies. Without a doubt, this movie lands in my top 3 favorite action movies of all time...until now, of course. If you watch/have watched this movie and (have) liked it, a similar movie which I would also recommend is Source Code. Pretty much the same style, but I would say Non- Stop is better, because the tension is always high, the acting is better, and it's completely unpredictable, even though you keep thinking you've figured it all out.

Realistic, but revolves around sex too much. Has the cheesiest and least creative plot imaginable. A guy movie.
28 April 2014
It was realistic, I'll give Joseph Gordon - Levitt that, but the plot was awful. Cheesy, overused story. It degraded women to the point where it was just disgusting to watch (I am a male, by the way (not that it should matter)). It revolved around sex and pornography way too much. I think it's pretty bad, but for some reason I didn't really mind watching it. A few underdeveloped problems and not enough character development. I give this a 5 (maybe a 6 because I'm feeling generous). The selected audience are clearly males, but I feel as if it was directed towards teenage males (which once again, I am) who don't have a full sense of how sexual or romantic relationships work. I mentioned previously that it was realistic, but to a certain extent. 5-6/10
