Doctor Who: Dot and Bubble (2024)
Tragically bad
This has got to be one of the worst Doctor Who episodes ever. And there have been some pretty terrible stories in this show.
Such a missed opportunity here. The idea of creatures consuming the population and people being oblivious has legs. But the execution is so poor. Rushing straight into the flimsy plot without giving us reason to care about the world or the characters.
Why the sickly pastel aesthetics and new-build basic setting that look like a poor man's Black Mirror Nosedive?
Ridiculously on the nose allegory for Gen Z and the way we interact with social media. Bizarre ending - why the racism (I'm assuming that's what that was?)?
Ncuti Gatwa is a great actor but his energy and delivery is becoming one-note. Always crying or shouting. His charisma is bulldozing at times. And Ruby lacks the depth that all the old companions had.
Where is the subtly in acting or writing?
I'm a long time fan of Doctor Who. It shaped my childhood. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry in pain watching this.
