The Last of Us (2023– )

Well done adaption to the game so far. We will see how it does.
23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a fan of the original game. So far I like how they've written the show to be its own thing but still is accurate to the game. I see people saying it's just another zombie apocalypse series. Keep in mind that the original game was released in 2013 on PS3. So maybe the stories seemed like it'd be overused because in the past 10 years there are more apocalyptic shows.

I don't think they meant for this show to be the best apocalyptic show out there, but it exists to expand on characters and background stories that the game couldn't cover, for the nature that games just can't do. But I'll have to say that I really like it so far. It's very faithful to the original game.

Because it is a tv show, they have more time and a different way to develop the characters, where in the game they had to move fast into action.

Light spoiler ahead: I like the changes they've done so far. A lot didn't like Ep. 3. I'm not sure I understand why. I loved how they introduced Bill, and the backstory how he came to be with Frank. At first I felt the romance between them was forced (the acting was fantastic tho), but the ending was written so beautifully. The deviation from the game still has me in awe the way the game did many years ago. I love that as a fan of the game I can still be surprised.

Ep.4 it's very obvious this is more of a story about Ellie and Joel and less about zombies. So if you are hoping to see zombies, just go play the game.

So many haters out there. Just enjoy for what it is. If you hate it stop watching it. Don't come back to talk about how much you hate it. Get a life.

I like the actors they've casted so far. It's insane if you think the real life actors has to look like the characters in the game. I would rather have someone who does a good job as an actor and not look like the original characters than to have someone that's terrible in acting.

Smile (V) (2022)

Meh. You watch it for jump scares and that's it.

Warning: Spoilers
Right off the bat something didn't make sense. They restrained the girl coming out of the ambulance, but let her free in the consultation (?) room. The reason to restrain someone is that if they are a danger to themselves or others. So they just let her free in a room full of things she can hurt herself with? This whole movie wouldn't happen if she was restrained.

The way they talked about mental illnesses made me cringe. It was obvious they didn't do any research at all.

I appreciated some of the camera work, shots of cars driving down the road, and upside down shots, but at times it seemed unnecessary, and doesn't add any substances to the whole movie. I get the feeling that maybe the director was a fan of shining?

The story was unoriginal, the smiles were creepy but it's pretty similar to another movie I've seen before.

They never explain the backstory of the monster? Demon?

The ending was predictable. There were a only two ways to go. If she successfully kills herself without witnesses then it would've been a weak ending.

The only thing I liked was the little twist at the end. That's one point and another point for the "big boss" at the end.

Probably the best Taiwanese horror film in the recent years
30 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer I'm from Taiwan but not religious, but watching this film I definitely got spooked knowing it was based on true story of a family that did some creepy stuff when they accidentally worshiped the wrong god and led to pretty tragic ending.

I believe this is the first documentation style film in Taiwan. Reminds me a lot of paranormal activity movie series. Stuff started happening pretty quick into the movie, it didn't waste time building the characters up, at least it didn't feel obvious like some other horror movies.

Story telling and editing was pretty good, I felt like it was paced well. There were some unique visual effects/tricks that I've never seen before.

I closed my eyes several times because I have trypophobia, as there were numerous trypophobia triggers. There were also some aspects of child abuse due to the mom's beliefs (being a mom myself that was a little hard to watch).

I gave it 7 out of 10 because the acting was okay; felt like the part with the apartment was too short; dialogues were a little cheesy but I'm pretty picky about that.

Not what I expected. Loved it anyways
9 April 2022
This was definitely not simply a romance genre. It has a little bit of horror in it, and incorporated many references to urban legends, which was pretty well done (if you are raised in Asian culture you made not get them). Story was unique with some nice twists. The acting was nice, the chemistry between actors were great. Hubby and I definitely cried to the movie. Nice theme song. Highly recommend. Fun fact: this movie was the author's tribute to his dog.

Fun action, simple story, great acting by Leung
25 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The storyline was alright, the acting was alright. Would've given it 6/10 but Leung's acting was what added one more point for me. The character was probably too simple for Leung (I've watched his movie growing up), but he really added a lot of depth to the role. Unexpected chemistry between Katy and shang chi? Or are they just friends? I can't tell.

A MUST SEE!
29 May 2021
Very well done! Even better than the first one. Simple, straight forward. Great story, sound, picture, and acting. That's all I need in a movie (although the people sitting behind us were not very quiet at all...I thought it was a quiet place). A MUST SEE. You did it again Jim!

Something different
14 December 2019
This movie is like a breath of fresh air. Probably the best Netflix original so far (which pretty much all sucked).
