Hit Too Close to Home
7 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm confused where to begin, since this movie is so simple yet so complex.

I'll start with the theme, it is such a good theme. NKCTHI tries to point at the obvious problem within a family these days. That problem is "Everything is not always ok". They did this with the most basic of all basics, the key is COMMUNICATION. Yes, you read that right, they played their cards correctly, digging how communication is fundamental in a family and how a family will eventually self destruct with a bad communication skill.

The second card that they played correctly is how FAVORITISM is usually happened within a family with more than 1 child. They kept this problem and combined it with the communication problem that the main characters had, mixing and matching whilst throwing some past trauma that was kept secret this whole time.

This movie is a great one from technical aspect, how the color spectrum and the shots framed perfectly within each scene. They also have a great scoring, the OST Fine Today by Ardhito is so so good, but my favorite was the scene where Hindia's song was played, Gosh that scene is pure perfection.

The actors are also great at playing their own parts, although I would have preferred that the parents were played by the same actor, but oh well, can't have everything I guess.

I suggest you go watch it while it is still playing at the cinema, you won't regret it, even more so if you can relate to the story, you will feel the strong points of the movie with so much more enhanced experience.

The movie that we need AND we deserve
29 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Where to begin, this movie is spectacular first and foremost. The directing, the writing, maybe a little lacking in the acting department but it's understandable since the main characters are newcomer in the department, but superb acting from the senior actors nonetheless.

So, right off the bat, I'll congratulate Gina S. Noer for her directorial debut, she did spectacularly through this movie. She's no newbie at this business and it shows. The shots were beautiful, some of the scene even though taken at Indonesia's slum area, those shots were a scene stealer, particularly the bridge scene. Also the infirmary scene with the long take, those are some killer shots I tell ya.

The writing and acting is pretty good as well, and I personally felt that this movie has more than 1 climax point which is good because they divided it evenly between climax. One of the best scene is when all of the actors were grouped in the school infirmary, Lulu Tobing, Cut Mini, Dwi Sasono played their part perfectly. Zara and Angga also great particularly in this part as a scared and confused teenager, sadly they are a bit lacking in few of their line deliveries.

The scores are also great, good choice of songs to fill the background with, particularly naif with their "Jikalau" really fits the film.

For such a long time Indonesia needs this kind of movie, educating us about the importance of sex ed, the communication between parents and their children and how we're supposed to face a certain condition when we're faced with one.

All in all, I gave it 8/10, it is a GOOD movie, just go watch it before it is pulled from the cinema :)

Roller Coaster of Emotion in an Abusive Relationship Themed Movie.
30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, this movie is turning out better than what I was expecting. The roller coaster feeling when you watch this movie is really thrilling and keeps you wanting more.

So, this is a rather ordinary love story, boy meets girl, they fall in love, blablabla but then something went wrong. Now this is where things take a turn for the worst.

Yudhis (Adipati Dolken) is portrayed perfectly as the abusive boyfriend for Lala (Putri Marino). As I expected, Adipati played his part perfectly, but what interest me more is Putri's Character. She played Lala perfectly, considering she's a newbie to acting, but in this movie, she reflects the truth behind most of abusive relationship, the inability of the victim to get out of it.

Moving on to the supporting cast, Yudhis's Mom (Cut Mini) and Lala's Dad (Yayu A.W. Unru). Now Cut Mini, if you watched most of her movies, she's a full fledged actress and versatile, and in this movie, she proved it once again as the abusive mom that spreads her bad habit to her son. But for Lala's Dad, played by Yayu, I never heard of him, but his acting here is pretty good as the strict dad.

Lala's friend (Griselda Agatha and Chicco Kurniawan) also played perfectly here. They act as the perfect friend, easygoing but at times they also can be reliable, even though they often become the source of Yudhis's bad behavior towards Lala.

The plot itself, from the beginning until almost the middle part of this movie, I think it's a good setup, and when the conflict starts, that's where things get interesting. This movie took the theme of abusive and possessive relationship, a thing that is very common since the dawn of mankind, and this movie take it to the next level. Not gonna spoil too much, but I'll be damned, they spice things up with some twist here and there, how the abusive person can be angry the first second and then begging for forgiveness the next minute. How a manipulative person is doing everything in his power to get what he wants in a relationship.

Other strong aspect in this movie is the song chosen for the background music. "Dan" by Sheila on 7 is the perfect song for this movie, how the lyrics took this movie's atmosphere to a whole new level. Also the next strong point is the cinematography. Beautiful shots of the city and the pool where Lala train for her next championship and the mixture of city and nature is just perfect here.

The rather weak point of this movie is the writing, well it's not that bad per se, but it could be better.

All in all, final verdict is 8/10. I suggest you go watch it if you haven't, you won't regret it.

Reality wrapped perfectly in 1 movie.
19 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie last week, and my the hype is satisfied. Been worrying about this movie when it was announced, since the novel fan base argue and mostly did not agree about the movie.

So, without further ado, here it is.

It's the story of a married couple, Ale and Anya. The term "Critical Eleven" itself is a term used in airplane world. The term itself was used to describe how their marriage life is as we see it. Depicting the reality of a lost of their first child in their little family, Reza Rahadian and Adinia Wirasti portrayed Ale and Anya perfectly.

My God their chemistry is over the top. Every scene, be it fighting couple scene or the lovey dovey one truly catches the moment. Audience can feel the love or the hate just by those scene alone.

The music score? I don't have to talk about it that much. IT IS PERFECT. Isyana Sarasvati with her signature voice and the song that she wrote is just absolutely perfect. Truly captures the moment when it was played during some scenes.

The cinematography? Well let me put it this way. The way I see New York based on other movie, it's just like a big city, crowded with people and very very hectic atmosphere. But here, in Critical Eleven, they managed to show the audience about the other side of new York, with those beautiful shots of Central Park and all.

The supporting actor and actresses are very carefully picked to and fortunately they did good. Slamet Rahardjo? He is a veteran actor and portrayed Ale's dad perfectly. The same goes for Widyawati as Ale's mother. Oh, and Anya's friends? They were absolutely funny at times and comforting as well.

Final Verdict: 9/10. I recommend you to watch this BIG TIME.

All the more reasons to watch this movie.
18 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As an Indonesian that anticipated this movie for a very long time since the first information released, I must say I'm quite pleased with the final results. As expected from a movie starred by Iko Uwais, blood and fast paced action scene are the main elements in this movie.

Talking about strong opening, the movie went for a solid middle part and striving for a pretty great ending. Though I must say that the plot looked a little bit similar like Kill Bill with a better way to conclude the story I must say. Still, with a great execution there's some plot hole and questionable actions that the characters made, I mean what's with the Rika character shooting randomly while she can leave unscathed? All in all though, still the good parts made up for the silly scene.

The acting itself is pretty good, although I would like to know more about the "evil" characters like Tejo and Rika. As for Iko's character, like always he played it pretty good, albeit the cringey dizzy scene. And well I must say, Chelsea is shining pretty good in here with her charm that she brought to this action-gore movie. The main antagonist himself portrayed the character pretty good and speaks English very well with no weird accent whatsoever.

All in all I give this movie a 7/10, good overall with some parts that actually can be potential but were neglected.

Succinct and heartwarming.
22 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched this some time ago, but only get to write this now, and I'm just going to say that this movie is spot on about forgiving and bonding. Mostly the bonding part, where 2 strangers that has never met before, trying to bond and make peace with their past.

The theme song? Yeah it's good, particularly when the 2 played piano together, and overall it's pretty good. The camera shots is pretty good as well, they have good angle to play with.

So if you haven't watch this movie, I suggest you go and do it if you have the time. If you don't like drama, maybe this movie isn't for you. But if you like drama, this movie might be your cup of tea.

Hey, what's up with love?
17 May 2016
So, first things first I'll say feel free to judge this movie as you see fit as I will judge this one from my point of view as a pretty die hard fan.

Let's speak frankly here, first of course the movie isn't perfect. Heck it's not even close to the first one. Why? Because the condition is not like what it used to be. We're not here to see "Geng Cinta" as a bunch of happy and innocent high school girls. They are adults now.

Second, I agree that it felt a bit rushed in the production, bunch of plothole and all. Still though, for me you can't cover all those years lost in Rangga and Cinta's love life in just about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Third, well I do miss Alya as she was the one who tied the gang and still supporting Cinta to chase after Rangga and made all of this possible. Because she can't join the shooting she was written out of the second movie, well I can't blame the crews though, they have schedule as well here, so that's that. A shame, but the shooting must go on.

Lastly, "it's too much drama". Well IT IS A DRAMA MOVIE, so don't complain about the amount of drama in the movie, instead I'll say this: How they handle the drama is actually not bad. Yes it's cheesy but isn't that what romance movie does? Creating a cheesy situation and then end it with a fluttering romance in your hearts? And I must say that they did it pretty good.

Oh and 1 more thing that I love from AADC 2 is that the product placement isn't that much disturbing, it is proportionally placed and actually feels pretty natural. Also I love the Soundtrack, Melly Goeslaw and Anto Hoed did a decent job again in the series, well done! So, I would recommend the movie to others, first and foremost to the ones that had watched the prequel. For me it's 8/10.

A Copy of Everything
12 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be damned, I'm an Indonesian and I must admit that this is one heck of a good Indonesian movie. Trust me, these past few years Indonesia got some bad films, but this is not one of them.

This movie depicts what really happened in Indonesia. Let's talk one thing at a time. Beginning with a real summary of what Indonesia slums looks like, how the narrow alley and all the low budget housing depicted in the movie, it is all so true and I must admit the scenery that was chosen to describe Indonesian slums is rather well shot.

Second, the DVD piracy. This is a common thing in Indonesia and Joko Anwar (the director) is rather clever to use this as a portrayal for one of the main character (Alek), which is actually kind-hearted but is forced to pirate those DVDs because of economical reasons.

The third one is about how politicians always gets the upper hand against the small people. This is portrayed rather good by Tara Basro and Chicco Jerikho in the movie, where their romance life is threatened by the thugs hired by the corrupt politician from the prison. Joko Anwar really hit the spot by bringing the truth straight into the spotlight with this political problem (the setting is also supporting, which is during presidential election campaign).

Tara and Chicco did rather well in this movie, I've seen Chicco's movie a few times and I like his acting as for Tara, this is her first movie for me, and I must say that she played her part very well. Even though at the beginning it felt a little bit awkward from the way she speaks.

All in all this is a movie I would recommend to watch. Not perfect in every way, but has it's own focal point. A Copy of My Mind: 8/10.

25 Minutes of Anime Length, Hours after effect.
4 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I wanted to say that this is a superb masterpiece by Makoto Shinkai. I'm not a big fan of Japanese anime or whatsoever, but this one stunned me, like BAM! Seriously though, I do not regret my decision, watching this anime instead of doing my task.

A story with a simple concept, and I LOVE IT BIG TIME, because this one contains a time and space elements, a time difference from one place to another etc. You don't have to be an anime lover/fans or maniac to love this great job by Makoto Shinkai. The story itself, straight to the point and tells everything needed to be a perfect short anime/movie and even better, the duration is short. It also contains some action, drama and romance as well.

Yes, the graphic is not as good as 5cm per-seconds and some modern anime, sure because this one was made a long time ago(duh it was 2003). But, you can compare it to any anime at that time, and I assure you that this one has a good quality.

All in all, after I watched this, I can't move on from this anime, for hours, I don't know probably days or weeks. Anyway, if you haven't watched it, GO ON MAN, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IT'S GREAT AND THIS IS 2014 ALREADY. =))

Warm, touching and funny
20 April 2014
Teacher's Diary, is a typical Thailand drama movie, with a common concept. At the beginning, I laughed a lot while watching this, considering a drama, it contains quite a handful jokes with a good proportion.

After a considerable amount of jokes, then comes the serious part, even though the serious part already coming, they still giving some jokes element in the middle, this is quite good actually, because the jokes aren't overriding the drama element and the romance as well.

The plot itself, usually I got to guess the ending correctly just by watching the beginning and middle part of a movie, but this one is unpredicted, well all in all this is a good movie.

The characters connection, from one another makes us(watchers) feel a warm and sometimes touched by the reality shown in this movie(floating school for poor people).

In the end, The Teacher's Diary: 9/10, is a warm, touching and funny movie.
