The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)
One of the best romantic films in the classic ghost genre
From the very beginning to the final ending the audience is transcended into an ethereal love story with a beautiful haunting film score by the late film composer, Bernard Hermann. Under the direction of Joseph Leo Mankiewicz, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was specifically filmed in an exquisite atmospheric moody black and white film stock by cinematographer Charles Lang.
The screenplay and the dialogue is magnificent. I assumed that this was a movie version of an original stage play, however I was wrong. Though the screenplay could very well be adapted for live theater and for Broadway.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is one of my favorites along with the 1939 movie classic On Borrowed Time which starred Lionel Barrymore and the classic 1947 British film, Blithe Spirit, which also starred Rex Harrison.
The Whispers (2015)
The Whispers" is adapted from Bradbury's Short Story "Zero Hour and a 1958 Movie "The Space Children"
I wish ABC's Production Department would list a credit at the end of this summer series and give credit were credit is due. "The Whispers" is adapted from Ray Bradbury's short story "Zero Hour" and also a 1958 Movie entitled "The Space Children" which was Directed by Jack Arnold with story by Tom Filer, and screenplay by Bernard C. Schoenfeld. "The Space Children" synopsis in one tag line: 'Slowly...and with horror the parents realized THEIR CHILDREN WERE THE SLAVES OF 'THE THING' FROM OUTER SPACE!' Sound familiar? It should, because "The Whispers" also derived (stole?) a lot of their plot line from this 1958 movie as well. In fact, many, many years ago Steven Spielberg mentioned that he liked this movie ("The Space Children"). How 'bout that, eh?
"The Whispers" is quite boring with good suspenseful music that makes one feel something very important is about to happen and you will finally know and understand what is going to happen next... Unfortunately we don't, but the music score continues to tease us. Very frustrating! It's like trying to have sex... a lot of foreplay, without the resolution, the pay-off...you know... THE CLIMAX! They should have condensed this summer series into a two hour TV movie and give proper credits were credits are due to "Zero Hour" and "The Space Children". Mr. Spielberg?
Sole Survivor (1970)
"Sole Survivor" Has Touched The Hearts And Souls Of So Many People. It's Amazing How Our thoughts Have Wings! Glad to know The Universal Consciousness Still Works!
I also recall watching this hauntingly beautiful Made-for-TV movie with excellent directing and a top notch cast which aired in 1970. In Fact, several years ago I requested TCM to find this movie and broadcast it - however to no avail. I remember watching this movie with my mother and older brother and I do recall what made this movie so memorable was the unexpected twist to the story toward the very end. When one of the "surviving" crew members spots a rescue helicopter he waves his arms then cheers as the helicopter approaches and says something like "So that's what they look like. Incredible! I heard rumors about these things coming out soon!" What made this so eerie was the fact that the rescue helicopter is a modern one and all the crew members that we have been watching for most of the entire movie that survived are wearing WWII uniforms. That's when all of us watching this incredible movie realized what had happened. (Hint: It's something that film director M. Night Shyamalan borrowed from and used in "The Sixth Sense"). Guys who are into war movies will enjoy watching this movie as well as the ladies. It sent chills up and down my spine - my mom, my brother as well as myself were overwhelmed with emotion and cried and cried until the very end... until they finally find... the sole survivor.
