Blue and Orange (2003)
Sweet and artistic piece

Through the creator's own drawings and Japanese (subtitled) narrative, we get a glimpse of the chaos in the world around her, until we finally see her focus onto her daughter. Inukai uses beautiful black and white sketches and drawings to accompany her poetic monologue. In the end, we can sense her tenderness and love towards her little girl. It's an affection that anchors and supports the narrator, and renders all other things unimportant.
Short, sweet, and charming, "Blue and Orange" is a work of art on many different levels. It also proves that animation is not just a medium for funny family movies. Through a series of scrawls and scribbles, animators are also able to tap into empathy and serious human emotions as well.
