Malignant (2021)
A blemish on James Wan's record
Before I get started - this film is beautifully shot. The cinematography is clearly thought out and almost every scene looks great. Sadly, that's where the praise ends for this one.
The first two acts fall completely flat, and the effects in the third are laughable. The twist doesn't land given that the majority of theatregoers should be able to figure it out with little effort.
James Wan is a fantastic filmmaker and has produced some great horror flicks. Malignant, however, isn't one of them and I'm sure this one will be forgotten pretty quickly.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
People are missing the point
A lot of people seem to have missed the point of this film. Yes, it's abstract. No, it doesn't give you a blatant explanation. But it treats the audience as a smart enough group of people to fit together the pieces it does give you to understand what's going on.
A brilliantly crafted representation of the psyche of a person who is totally alone in the world, and definitely worth the watch.
The Invitation (2015)
An average thriller ruined by a mix of predictability and an absurd final twist
Yes, this film is a slow burn and no, that doesn't necessarily work in the film's favour. Much of the last act of the film is entirely predictable, and there is no doubt in my mind that the final twist will leave you disappointed.
**Spoilers below**
It is perfectly clear that this is going to be a 'suicide cult' in the end to anyone who is paying attention to the film. Having said that, I wouldn't blame you for not paying attention for the entire 100 minutes as the first hour does precious little to capture your attention. The last half an hour ramps up the pace with almost no warning, which is bizarre given how obvious the 'clues' are throughout the rest of the film. The twist in the final moments that this is happening in almost every house in the entire neighbourhood completely obliterates any suspension of disbelief. Are we supposed to believe that every member of this cult is rich enough to buy a house in this area, and that all of these houses just happened to be for available at the same time they all returned from Mexico?
Don't Watch This: Antoni Psycho (2018)
Rip off
Very obvious American Psycho rip off which is completely devoid of any substance, made all the more obvious with having to credit Lionsgate in the closing credits.
Don't Watch This: Incommodum (2018)
Waste of time
Poor attempt at a short film. At around two minutes, it may seem worth a watch but even that short amount of time is a waste when you consider that it's a seemingly random collection of footage that tries too hard to be unsettling.
Don't Watch This: CTRL+ALT+DEL (2018)
Pointless
Pointless attempt at making a horror short, which makes no logical sense nor does it make any sense if you try and factor in any supernatural elements which may or may not be present.
