Fear the Walking Dead: The Road Ahead (2023)
Terrible ending to no fault of the cast
What a terrible ending to what was a promising show - so convoluted & unbelievable with previously deceased characters miraculously raising from the dead - so disappointing as the writers try to move the episode in different directions with twists & turns that are non shockers but just make the viewer question their sanity as to why they are making themselves endure this dirge - the continuity also is questionable as scenes go from day to nite & back again - so sad when this series introduced us to characters like John & June (a wonderful story & fabulous actors), Morgan or Charlie who died ridiculously for real this time in a previous episode - this episode is really only for the diehard fans of FTWD .
Vis a Vis: El Oasis (2020)
2 fingers to the begrudgers who want a rehash
I've watch all 4 seasons of vis a vis - excellent hands down - funny/dark/cynical - a deeper societal commentary than you're just watching - I could go on - happily I came across el oasis on all4's Walter presents - yes, it's not verbatim the original but who would want that? Seriously? There are several story arcs - stories within stories - admittedly some I would question but that's just how whacky brilliant this series has been IMO - it's easy to see how Alex Pinta moved from this to Money Heist - El oasis takes the characters Maca & Zulema into new territory - shame Saray has such a small cameo - I hate spoilers so I won't go there for those who ain't seen it - don't believe the low ratings - see for yourself.....
McCartney 3,2,1 (2021)
A 1 sided tale
Ok, from the offset - I'm not a Paul fan - McCartney always seems so pretentious - sorry not sorry!!
Rick Ruben must be the most inoffensive man alive - here he comes over total fanboy in total awe of the subject McCartney more so than the Beatles that it becomes sickening tiresome with little objectivity at play.
Essentially a one sided tale of Mecca's prowess & acumen - the parts where he explains how free the band was that anyone could play - hmm wipes over the famous let it be argument quote 'I'll play anything you want me to play, or I won't play at all, if you don't want me to. Whatever it is that would please you, I'll do ' .
Doesn't demystify the Beatles nor Mecca - more grandstanding.
Ava (2020)
As bad as Colin Farrell's moustache........
I will keep this brief - this film is appalling - there is nothing nothing redeeming about it - from Colin's Oirish accent - be gorrra be gosh top o' da mornin' - a 5 yr old could write a better script than this which leads me to the point how do these films constantly get made?
The Vow (2020)
This really happened people.......
The hardest thing to believe is that this actually happened in this day and age but to the people that it did - professionals / educated people whom you would expect more sensibilities than to believe a modern day Manson in NIKE - it's horrific how it starts - like the calm before the storm for our narrators while we watch knowing there's a sense of foreboding doom as we watch the converts listen doe eyed guzzling the kool aid - I do think production wise the series could have been condensed into fewer episodes - not to mention the India saga really becomes jarring - quality over content - worth the watch even if you get slightly jaded by the end and that's not taking away from the story or survivors - that's more on the film makers and their duty in reporting the story.
Utopia (2020)
Dystopia
I could write a protracted review here of this US unnecessary reboot but it would just be too vitriolic.....there is nothing redeeming about this series - do not watch or watch at your own risk or curiosity. Seek out the original U.K. series instead & maybe then you might understand why this remake is utter $hit......
Fear the Walking Dead (2015)
New territory for the walking dead series
Like everyone else I too thought little of this TWD spin off - of course there are the die hards who will never accept FTWD but having watched this series for the last 6 seasons something has changed within the FTWD - it's like it has come into its own in S05/S06 - uncertain territory unlike the comic book template TWD sought to follow and that's a good thing as well as the ejection of that dreadful family - there are engaging characters - Ginny Dorie June Charlie and of course Morgan who add weight now to another wise clunky cast - similarly to its parent show TWD - it will be interesting to see where this goes before running on empty......
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
The New Coke? Or just another AMC hamburger....
Does anyone remember New Coke? Exactly!! This is like someone left the cake out in the rain....
Don't even get me on the ham characters that are - Felix & Hope - no depth to the characters probably no fault of the actors just the material they're working with. One can only hope this improves with time - not going south as a jobie swan song soiling its parent TWD legacy or a alt tween lite TWD.
For those non millennial - approach by leaving your brain at the door.
In the Dark (2019)
How Do Programs Like This Get Green Lit?
I just don't get this program - the one dimensional story and characters - throw in an awkward blind person with a perchant for casual sex, alcohol and a chip on her shoulder - oh don't forget a lesbian flat mate - all boxes checked!! This is a painful watch - the dialogue is so contrived. Hard to believe rubbish like this get made and others like Counterpart get cancelled!! Approach with caution.....or just plain avoid!!
A Prayer Before Dawn (2017)
A Midnight Express for the next Gen
Based on the true events of Brit William (Billy) Moore who moves to Thailand with dreams of becoming a pro boxer - he eventually ends up in prison due to his involvement with drugs/etc.
Note there is very little English dialogue in this film & even hardly any of the spoken Thai is subbed but that in itself does not take away from this film - it in my opinion reinforces Billy's isolation (no family or money), frustration (language barrier) & obvs difference from his fellow cell mates (his cherub complexion against heavily tattooed Thai's).
This is not a film with fancy camera angles, it's well paced to show a sense how slow time is passing, visceral & sometimes hard to watch (male rape scene). While similar in ways to Midnight Express, this film does hold itself up there probably because Joe Cole turns in an excellent performance which otherwise might have just made this an average film.
Definitely one to watch.
Succession (2018)
Marmite by HBO
I'm interested to see where to goes? Do real people like these characters exist? I'm sure they do!! It's not an easy watch as the storyline doesn't drive you to want to watch the next episode & all of the characters are so hateful especially Culkins - in fairness he has a face I'd never tire of punching!! A 5 score for the acting - story 0......watch if you're bored like me during the World Cup.
The Hundred Code (2015)
Nordic Ham & Cheesy Approach With Caution
Like most of the Users reviewing The 100 code, I too have not much to offer in kindness as a review.
Dominic Monaghan is pure awful - his accent & character - but is that down to the writers trying casting him as a male equivalent of Saga?
Then there's the plot - totally transparent & narratives that so obviously borrow from other type programs like Hannibal (the murderer calling it in to the resident psycho Hellstrom), The Bridge & The Killing. Not to mention the idiot sidekick dicks story arc - possibly to prove that not all Swedes have a stick up their arse 24/7 - more cheese?
Michael Nyqvist totally carries this show & as another reviewer pointed out whenever Monaghan opens his mouth - its dreadful - you really do wanna switch off!! As for Conley (Clownly) character's Paddywhackery - ugh, " Ma Da was from Gawlwaay - Jaysus - a fisherman" - never has any actor been so bad @ being Oirish since Tom " Is It You Shannon? " Cruise in Far & Away or as we call it in Ireland - Feck Off & Don't Come Back!!
So I give 2 star rating - for Michael Nyqvist & the beautiful Swedish landscape.....
Approach @ your own peril!!!
