Hemisphere (2023)
A confined space for a broad space drama
In this Sci-Fi drama, an investigator flies through space to find out what led to the demise of the crew members. Guided by technology, Sandra both searches for clues to the events, as well as her memories. Information told through interviews, photos, and the recordings of her ex-husband, we learn there is a battle not only with space pirates, but also internally. The other character's appearance, a crew member that had been stowed away, provides both leivity and showcases what really happened to those aboard. A mainly two character feature is a difficult task to accomplish, but there is enough mystery behind the characters and the events on the ship to enjoy the story. A unique concept, an intresting lead, and the hidden danger make it a film worth checking out!
Easter Replacements (2022)
A fun story with a great message
Easter Replacements is a fun and unique look at marriage, careers, family and a holiday dinner. In a movie where everyone wants something, Travis brings to light a story that shows how being genuine, sticking to your values and looking out for others works out in the end. The film does a great job of putting unique characters in various situations, while providing a message that doesn't feel forced. The main character was enjoyable as the straight man, trying to be composed, while a web of agendas swirl around him. If you're looking for a positive film with some humorous moments, this is a great one to choose.
Suffrage (2023)
A fun film with quirky characters
Suffrage tells the story of a private investigator working through relationships, politics, the movie business and her own personal struggles in a fun and corky way. Cat Black steals the show with her unique personality and views on life, while other actors like Eric Roberts make the most of their screentime. The film reminds me a bit of Ace Ventura, where you never know what Natasha's gonna do or say, but it'll always be memorable. If you enjoy a movie with commentary, wild ideas, and knows how to have fun with it's plot and it's unique characters, you'll enjoy Natasha Hall's story in Suffrage.
Bang Bang Betty: Valerie's Revenge (2023)
A Revenge Film with tons of Action
Bang Bang Betty, Valerie's Revenge was an action based crime story. In the vein of movies like Sicaro, Alex Hwang create a story that showcases the physical and emotional strength of the lead actress and her range of emotions facing from the casualties of her commitment. The story of an undercover detective going after a cartel leader after her partner's death was an interesting one and the action scenes and use of slow motion was very creative. There was lots of action and some great supporting roles. Emily Rose Hernandez was enjoyable and Kevin Caliber brought an action hero vibe. After seeing part two of the story, I look forward to taking a trip back to learn about the origins of Valerie.
The Allnighter (2023)
Wonderful, Quirky, and Compicated
The allnighter was an incredibly interesting film. It combines a drama with romance, some comedic moments, and elements of science. The story features Owen Beckman as Terrance, who plays an understated but complex role of a Uber driving grad student. In the co-star role, Gretchen Lodge plays Belle, a woman with secrets who lives life by the seat of her pants. Following his journey through chasing down his stolen items, fixing both of their family challenges, and trying to make it in school, the film accomplishes many dramatic aspects and ties them together well. Aimee Graham did a wonderful job as did the rest of the cast. Nicely done.
Silent as the Grave (2023)
A well-done mystery!
Silent as the grave is a thriller that focuses on a filmmaker with a mission. When he learns a mysterious person is leaving flowers at the gravesite of one of his relatives, he faces tremedous roadblocks and threats to complete his project. Someone doesn't want the story exposed. The film showcases the turmoil of trying to discover who holds the keys to the secrets. The main character, Chris, has his world turned upside down when he chases clues to resolve the mystery. The film is a slow-burning endeavor, requiring the audience to watch for clues, gestures, and subtle pieces of information to find those involved in the coverup. There's a lot of mystery and intrigue in the story and a cost of family and safety Chris risks. A well-done mystery.
Supercool (2021)
A Wild Miami Ride
Supercool tells the story of a awkward young man looking to connect with his dream girl. His attempts to be cool and gain her attention is a story most people can relate to. The film has some ingenious elements, like highlighting certain words, which looks like a fun education in slang. Throw in some gangsters, a charismatic, advice-giving best friend, and some over-the-top supporting characters, and you have a wild joyride. Having the role of writer, director and cinematographer in any film is difficult, but Gabriel Black showcases a unique voice and brings a vibrant vision to the screen. The film captures some great scenery and the lead character seems like someone to cheer for. This is a film that has it's own niche. Some of the themes may be too adult for some younger viewers, but fans of films like American Pie, Superbad, or Friday should enjoy the film.
Jovi & Lou (2023)
A unique comedy with hidden messages
Jovi and Lou is a tremendously unique title. It focuses on a man making a deal with the devil to save his wife. While the premise could be a serious one, the writer makes it an enjoyable ride by introducing humor with deities and an everchanging wager with a hidden message underneath. There is a nice chemistry with the Jovi and Lou, with their interesting banter and charisma. The main character, Joey, gets a lot out of expressions and comedic timing, which adds to the story. It reminds me a bit of the film Bedazzled, where the character has to learn valuable lessons. Some interesting name choices add hints to the story, such as the daughter with the middle name Solomon providing wisdom, or Lou for Lucifer. Overall, it was a fun watch and a creative mix of genres.
Craving (2023)
Craving is the true example of a horror film.
Craving is the true example of a horror film. It is reminiscent of past horror films where characters end up in a confined area, unaware that there is something or someone terrible waiting for them. This film shows a group of individuals with varied backgrounds, agendas, vices, and intentions stuck in a bar, while death awaits them outside and inside. The moody colors bring a nice vibe to this film, providing somewhat of a Dust to Dawn look. There's tons of blood and gore, which exemplifies the use of practical effects and shows the creator's talents. There were a lot of characters. Some of them I wanted to see in action a bit more, like Mac. If there's a character you enjoy, they probably won't be around too long. There was a lot of banter that also gave details of their backstories and their intentions. The monster was well done, showing what a talented artist can do with a creative mind. The only thing missing is a great name for the monster. The "kings of indie horror" struck again with Craving. Overall, a creative, creepy entry to the horror genre that takes the "cabin in the woods" horror film to a whole other level!
Exemplum (2023)
Exemplum is an incredibly unique story with tons of style.
Exemplum is an incredibly unique story with tons of style. It's the story of a priest that faces numerous challenges when he records confessions that become stories in an effort to make a name through social media. The filmmaker captures the look of Nolan's The Following, while having both an artsy feel and a Twighlight Zone atmoshphere. The angle choices and grainy black and white footage create an unsettling mood, while the writer and director showcases his talents by also playing the lead character as Father Collin, a man full of turmoil and ethical dilemnas. The characters playing Father Liam and Louie were also intriguing. A job well done!
Under Spanish Skies (2022)
Beautiful views under the Spanish skies
In the film Under Spanish Skies, there is a lot to like in terms of scenery, acting, and plot. The story revolves around an artist who makes a death pact with her former mate and the secrets between each of the guests that join her during her last days. The first aspect of Under Spanish Skies is the beautiful scenery. The location, wildlife, beautiful mornings, lovely sunsets and warm nights fit the film amazingly. The music also puts the viewer straight into Spain and compliments the flashbacks. The complicated threads tie each character to the other and showcases that each individual has a secret. Some secrets are more selfish than others. While all of the characters performed well, I truly enjoyed Amr Waked as Andres. His screen presence, accent, and acting chops captured my attention. It was an original concept that was incredibly well done by the writer and director Nathan Buck.
Women in the Front Seat (2023)
Well done documentary!
Great visuals and an inspirational story. Not just for someone who loves motorcycles, but learning the inspiration behind women that ride, overcome challenges, and share the joy of the ride is incredible. As someone who does enjoy motorcycles, seeing the journey of these riders and how they overcome the crashes and broken bones, but never a broken spirit of the ride. The variety in the stories let the viewer connect with each rider, their individual story and their collective trials were something to remember. Great job by the team responsible for this project. It was a well done documentary!.
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
A unique look at relationships
A unique look at relationships- The film does a great job capturing the internal conflict of a disfunctional relationship. It shows the changing wants of a storyboard artist from career acceptance to seeking love and both hating and loving what comes with a relationship built on selfish interests. The cast was well chosen for the roles and the dialogue was quirky, yet honest. It also shows what happens someone tries to fill a wounded heart with a firecracker. It showed a wide range of emotions from the lead character and he showcased his fragility while at some point being fed up with her actions. Well done!
Opus Cope: An Algorithmic Opera (2021)
For the love of music
For the love of music- As someone fascinated with music production, Opus is wonderful trip into the science of sound. The documentary communicate how music relates to life and discusses the question if technology can capture the soul of music like a human. I enjoyed the discussion about the music of legendary creatives and the displays of vintage equipment combined with new age technology. The scores behind the dialogue fit the mood of the discussion. This seems like a film that would be great for music students and those looking to understand how sound works with technology. A well-done learning experience.
AVA: A Twist in the Road (2021)
A unique look at complicated life-choices and consequences
AVA: A Twist In The Road captures the life of a woman after losing her partner. Showing the perspective of "the other woman" who goes through stages of grief, depression, isolation, support and later independence and moving on. This movie would be great for anyone going through these challenges and the tone offers some laughs to balance out the character's pain allowing you to root for the main character to find her way. I would've enjoyed seeing the male lead a bit more. Their relationship was intriguing and there was some chemistry with the two, but then it would be a different story. An enjoyable watch!
Daddy's Divas (2022)
Finally, a sitcom that parents and children can both enjoy!
Daddy's Divas is a wonderful comedy series showcasing a quirky family in a suburban neighborhood. After watching Episode 1, I wanted to invest in future episodes to learn more about these interesting characters and learn what happens next for Michael. Writer and Director David Tittone captured the spirit of a proper sitcom, with a Modern Family meets Full House vibe. I especially enjoyed the main character, Michael, a dad who means well but shares "The Divas" sense of humor. The two daughters, Brooklyn and Jocelyn, performed well as lovable jokesters. There's also the neighborhood terror, Lucas, who even tough bikers fear. There was geniue chemistry between the kids and their on-screen dad. Finally, a sitcom that parents and children can both enjoy! Can't wait to see future episodes!
