Dexter: New Blood: Smoke Signals (2021)
Really good episode
Dexter is narrating the story and after burning the body meets with the father of the victim. As the ashes of the burned son are falling Dexter gives drunk dad a ride. What is remarkable in this scene is Dexter's sarcasm and mockery of the dad. He has zero empathy and all of the psychological hallmarks of a serial killer. Don't fall for smart ass jokes and dark humor this is the most frightening moment of the show and its meant to show the true mental issues that Dexter has.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020)
I loved the first one but this one not so much
I fell on the floor laughing in the first Borat film where Borat and Azamat are naked in the elevator. The whole thing was funny. This time not so much. The dialogue between Borat and his daughter was so frustrating. Him speaking in Hebrew and her answering in Bulgarian for minutes at a time. Getting a fax machine employee to send stupid messages where the guy is clearly smirking at this was just not funny. The Trump hate was clearly in line with the host of late night talk shows and very mundane and repetitive. We get it the media hates him and would rather have you vote for anyone else. Cohen's strength is his subtlety and mastery of language, the ability to twist words. He did not have an opportunity here due to his recognizable face in any outfit. The result is gibberish conversation in two different languages that has no meaning.
Chernobyl (2019)
Gripping and dignified
I was one of the lucky few children from surrounding Kiev who was evacuated by my parents. My mom worked as an engineer designing nuclear power plants and was one of the few to know. Days later I was in Odessa with grandma. I remember the pervasive fear of radiation, a word that was used over and over at home. The HBO take is marvelous. Its patient and honest and does not need to dramatize one of the most dramatic and catastrophic events in human history. It is devastating but absolutely wonderful to watch.
The Walking Dead: Here's Not Here (2015)
Wonderful
A brilliant episode where you really don't know what will happen. This episode follows on up on 3 action packed episodes. It slows it down and lets us think. The episode forms an argument against violence and killing in a show that centers around it. Murder does not bring relief, only life does. The episode is brilliant, surprising and full of hidden meaning. A man in a cage whose door is open, but willingly remains there. A goat and a shepherd is a classic symbol. This was a well thought episode, and very memorable and well acted. The psychologists greatest comfort is not the death of his nemesis, but the remaining vestiges of his family life. A question arises, how to fight the wolves. They cannot just be killed they need to change from killers back to people.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Star Treck or Fast and Furios, seems like I went to the wrong movie
This was pretty bad. The nuances and subtleties of the original Star Trek have been replaced by dumbed down action. It seems that the director has zero respect for the audience and just shoves mindless fighting scenes down our throats. The 3D action makes you feel like you are watching a video game that someone else is playing. The plot is borrowed mostly from the 1982 Trek movie Wrath of Khan. The characters spend 90% of their time, running, shooting, arguing with each other and punching each other. The bottom line is there is nothing new here. Even the visuals are not convincing. If you are a Star Trek fan, prepared to be horrified. If you are not a fan prepared to be bored.
