A fantastic account of one of the most influential bands of my generation
19 January 2010
'No Distance Left to Run' is a sentimental journey through Blur's beginnings, success, disillusionment, re-invention, arguments, break-ups and the emotional reunion and gigs of summer 2009.

This documentary is fantastically shot, with intertwined footage from the band's 1990's Brit- pop haze. The interviews with the band, although not altogether open and revealing, do illustrate somewhat the band's dynamics and demons they each faced.

Blur have always been a special band for me, a band which defined and re-defined the 1990s and early 2000s. This documentary is a superb representation of their chameleon-type talent: a band who were not afraid to take risks. Unlike their old adversaries, Oasis.

The film illustrates Blur as an utterly original band, whom I am sure, will be remembered in many years to come, as one of the most influential bands to come out of England of the last thirty years

Generation Kill....powerful stuff.
12 April 2009
Generation Kill is an enjoyable, funny and enlightening account of an elite Marine Company's experiences in the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Every episode is excellently filmed, acted and presented. It can be slightly confusing as the director and writer literally throw the viewer into the world of these marines; who have an entirely different language and dialogue when talking to each other (lets just say, if you are easily offended, do not watch this series!).

Although some of the exchanges between the Marines themselves can be quite uncomfortable, the majority of the dialogue is witty and funny (am thinking about the 'wall of heroes' at the local Publix supermarket). The acting is also fantastic, Alexander Skarsgård's (Sgt. Brad 'Iceman' Colbert) dry and witty exchanges with James Ransone (Cpl. Josh Ray Person) are laugh-out loud. Skarsgård's cool performance illustrates his growing frustration with the mission. I was also impressed with Stark Sand's (Lt. Nathaniel Fick) performance, so much of his character's slow developing discontent and disillusionment by the way the invasion is progressing is shown in his eyes. He also illustrates a quiet, confident leadership in which he is constantly faced with questionable orders from his senior officers. It is clear to see that he has no choice, he has to to carry these orders out. Flick's concerns are maintaining the safety in his Company of soldiers and trying to sustain some sort of moral code (which he has to unhappily compromise at times, because orders have to be followed).

I do recommend that you watch the series more than once. On first viewing, the Marine dialogue can be a little confusing and it takes a while to get to know the characters (they all look the same in uniform!) On second viewing, I found the series much more powerful and critical of the decisions upper powers make and its effect on the middle to lower soldier ranks. Particular mention is the last scene of the final episode which is is VERY moving and makes a strong statement.

Exceptional Piece of Drama
16 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I am not a fan of war films in general; I happened to watch the first episode by chance and literally got caught up with the drama.

To say 'Band of Brothers' is exceptional underestimates how powerful and moving this piece of work is. From the part one to part ten you feel the emotions of each person and experience some of the horror which these young men encountered (I am well aware that the true realities of war cannot be accurately expressed on film).

What makes this series even more powerful is that you get to hear Easy veterans discuss their experiences to the camera at the beginning of each episode, linking the past events to the present and allowing the viewer to realise that the events (and people) portrayed actually existed.

Yes, there are some flaws: Blithe did not die of his wounds in 1947, Hitler did not die so early on in April. But, these are minor when contemplating the quality of the entire piece.

The performance of all the actors were fantastic too. Particular stand outs for me: Damien Lewis, the leader and heart of E company as Maj. Winters, Ron Livingston as the cocky but sensitive Lewis Nixon and Shane Taylor was incredibly moving in his portrayal of Doc Roe in the powerful episode 6 Bastonge.

I have seen the entire series twice now. The more you watch the more you get to know all the members of Easy Company; they are all there in the background and also come forward in the main action. In doing so, you see new things in each episode and the emotional impact of the casualties and the fact that some survived are even more powerful.

Go see, this series is an important part of history; we must never forget the silent thousands who never returned from war and the many veterans who survived and must had been affected by their experiences.

We stand alone together.

Atonement (2007)

Beautfully shot....too many uneccessary scenes
23 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
'Atonment' is once of my favourite novels and I was awaiting with anticipation to see the movie version.

I did however, have some reservations regarding the casting of Kiera Knightly as Cecila and I have to say (as always with Knightley)she looks pretty, pouts a lot and doesn't really do very much (apart from looking pensive and whispering in James McNavoy's ear).

James McNavoy, he portrays a moving and sensitive Robbie and the audience can see the agony of war etched on his face. As always, he never fails to deliver.

The film looks STUNNING the 4min scene of the utter devasation of Dunkirk was moving, the summer shots were also fantastic as well as London in the Blitz. However, the plot just did not gell for me....

There were too many unnecessary long scenes, which looked stunning but did not add anything to the film itself. There were a number of scenes set in France which seemed to add nothing to the film and also some of Briony's scenes in the hospital ( am thinking of her scene with a dying French Soldier) just seemed to go on forever, I wanted to see more of Briony's guilt and the how the relationship between Robbie and Cecila affected the families and those around the three.

I found the first half of the film good...However, for me, it seemed to lose its way once the war started.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good film but I did look at my watch after the first hour. I just did not seem to care about the characters all that much.

It pains me to say it as I LOVED the book...

A beautifully shot film....not a GREAT film....

Garden State (2004)

A blooming, Wonderful Garden State!
14 December 2004
'Garden State' came out in the Uk on December 10th. I had heard wonderful things about it from friends and relatives in the US - I wasn't disappointed...

From start to finish, the film made me laugh and cry. I thought the opening in which we met Braff lying emotionless in bed. Listening to the answer machine message from his dad about his mother's death was disturbing and really drew me in.

So many memorable moments: The funeral, touching and funny, the party scenes, the scan scene...And as for the dialogue - well, sharp and witty. I don't think I will ever forget Natalie Portman's dancing in her bedroom - just to be 'unique' or Zach Braff's touching comments about what makes a 'home' in the swimming pool.

Even those touching moments were funny; the fact that he couldn't swim!

As a mid twenty-something, This film really spoke to me. It's that question we all dread. We've graduated university, got jobs....then what?

Fantastic...just a shame it is not on wide release here...

One of the best films I have seen in ages!
