Better than reviews suggest

I started watching this film as I was reading the reviews. I was about ready to try something else when Gene Hackman's face appeared on the screen. I figured it can't be that bad with him in it. And you know what? It wasn't bad at all. I think it's a solid 7/10. It's more of a slow burn and that's fine with me. It doesn't just give it to you all right away. The cast is also great and helps this story along. As always Gene Hackman is a fantastic leading character. The great Eli Wallach never disappoints. It was interesting to see Edward Albert (actor Eddie Albert's son) as a cold company man. If you're a fan of CIA spy thrillers and conspiracy plots, this is well with the watch.

The River (1984)

Very Underrated

One of those Mel Gibson movies that no one has heard of and yet, is excellent. Sissy Spacek coming off of an Academy Award for Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) is excellent here too (nominated for this one as well).

It's always a tough go for farmers, but the 80's was particularly bad. Remember Farm Aid, 1985?

Scott Glen plays a good bad guy looking to push some farmers off their land. Mel and Sissy show that love is the tie that binds and resist giving up. Great cast and performances all around.

The River is really one of those lost gems from the 80's. The two main actors, Spacek and Gibson, show why their careers really took off during this time.

Eye opening...
23 March 2008
Sometimes a film comes along that makes you open your eyes and see what is really important in life.

This is one of those films.

From the opening scene, right to the end credits, we see that there are connections in life that cannot (and maybe should not) be explained.

Are they miracles? I guess it depends on what you believe.

Maybe there are miracles occurring all around us, but we're just slow to recognize them.

Regardless, this film makes you pause to think about it all. That can't be a bad thing.
