Daddy and Papa (2002)
Get out your handkerchiefs...
...because your going to need them! If you don't somehow shed a tear over this very touching documentary on gay people adopting then you either have no heart or you got ice water in your veins. Me, I was bawling when it came to an end. This does prove that as long as a child is loved and accepted in the home they will grow up into well adjusted adults. It's a shame that more states don't allow gay people to adopt because states are bound by the strident belief in the traditional nuclear family. What makes a family? I believe as I've stated before that a home of people who love and accept their children is what makes a family in my opinion. See Daddy and Papa because it will touch your heart.
Big Monday (1999)
Very Interesting
I really enjoyed this little movie very much. Some of the comments on Big Monday are pretty nasty and this movie doesn't deserve such hateful comments. Big Monday is fascinating to watch for it's shot in one take with no cuts at all. It takes a lot of guts and know how to pull off such a feat and I feel that Mr. Rehfield did this admirably. The comments I have heard over and over again is how poor the acting is and I'm like, poor acting? The acting in Big Monday isn't supposed to be in the classical or method style, these are ordinary people going about their lives (going to work, ordering a hot dog, waiting for the train, getting ready to go to work, making small talk, walking the dog, singing to themselves, etc) in plain day to day life rarely is there any profound drama and major conflicts (in fact most folks usually avoid drama and conflict). I think that is why the acting is very simple and low key, just like life. That is why I think Mr Rehfield succeeded in his film, he captured a kind of reality that is rarely ever seen in any kind of cinema, mainstream or independent. Big Monday deserves more attention and a re-evaluation so it can be viewed for the unique and original work that it is.
Sibirskiy tsiryulnik (1998)
Fun!
I guess I'm an odd one for using the word "fun" to describe this movie but it's the only word I could think of after viewing the Barber of Siberia. BOS isn't the typical period piece, it's not stuffy like the English ones and it's not heavy handed like in your standard Russian flicks. It has something that a lot of period films lack, HUMOR! The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and it goes along at a very brisk pace. Julia Ormond is one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of all time and this is an excellent vehicle for her. I will say this isn't the movie for serious film snobs, it's very light and audience pleasing. I would recommend Barber of Siberia to anyone looking for something different.
