Be careful : No entertainment, it's movie school teaching
17 June 2023
As well known for the movies of Wes Anderson, there is no entertainment at all. And if there is a single funny thing is this movie, and it was already the case for "The french dispatch", it's that it only seems to have been made to feed the conversations of a troop of pseudo-intellectuals, and God knows how many there are in this world. In the last minutes Mr Anderson even dares to talk about sleep, probably for the spectators who are still awake. But it's not really funny at all because the quality of 1 hour and 45 minutes of our life is in question. Maybe it is interesting for schools teaching cinematographic techniques, and sure it's an interesting movie for schools teaching the art and techniques of scriptwriting but essentially in order to teach what is certainly not to do. In the meantime let's read the comments of the pseudo-intellectuals who overrate this kind of movie here as usual. Of course it's a second punishment after viewing this movie but I assure you that it will never happen again : I'll never spend a single minute of my life again and I'll never spend a single cent of my fortune again to see a Wes Anderson movie. Completely and definitively healed, and no chance of recurrence.

Have you really thought about it and do you really want to see
14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
How a dad, a child and a teenager fight a monstrous lion with punches and kicks to prevent him from getting into a car, and to hear every 2 minutes sentences like: ok it's fine, don't worry, he tore my leg, it hurts, I'm bleeding out and I'm fainting but don't worry, we'll be fine and you know how much i loved your mom? And do you want to see how this monstrous lion is not killed by heavily armed poachers and hunters but is eventually subdued by other lions including an injured lioness ? Then this is the perfect movie for you.

The film is rated R because sometimes the big and ugly lion looks mean and we see corpses with blood and traces of deep lion paw scratches. It may impress the under 10s.

For me, script, dialogues, staging and acting, nothing is good. And in addition in this film the lighting of Africa is extremely dark. Give us back "Out of Africa" !

Beasts, the world is full of them
5 August 2022
From north to south and from east to west. Beasts who don't like foreigners, who don't like those who aren't locals, those who don't speak the same language, who don't have the same religion, who don't have the same political opinions, who don't have the same hair, who have a nice car, who have an ugly car, and so on : these venomous snakes nastily defend their little piece of mental territory against the Other. And it's not just in the mountain countryside, it's everywhere in the world of work, schools, colleges, universities, factories, offices, sports clubs, bars, political meetings, that they poison the lives of honest and peaceful people.

Love life, take good care of your family, do not envy anyone, and enforce the laws since active and incorruptible police and justice are essential for a peaceful society.

With a film of incredible tension from start to finish, thanks to Rodrigo Sorogoyen and his excellent Spanish and French actors for this remarkable allegory.

Phantasms, metaverse and chaos
4 August 2022
There are so many opportunities to fantasize (daydream) in everyday life (when you are working, when you are driving, when you talk to a friend or a colleague, when you watch tv, and so on) that if you allow yourself to be overwhelmed and invaded by phantasms, it can become complete chaos in your existence. And with the metaverse, it's worse. Congratulations to the scriptwriters, directors and actors for translating that chaos into a seething and swirling movie. More than ever, we must follow the Latin advice of Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Jesuit order): "Age quod agis": = do what you do. And stay focused on every task, even the smallest and simplest. This is the only way to avoid chaos.

Nothing new, nothing funny, nothing educational
20 July 2022
And so talkative, so noisy, so boring.

Initially I thought I'd become mad. But after one hour, thank you God and my Airpods, I fell asleep. And 1 hour and a half later, I woke up at the end of the credits, thank you the cleaning staff. 3/10 only because many probably sympathetic technicians did the job they were asked to do.

No more dinosaurs on earth (nor wolves nor bears nor dictators) !

Extreme therapy
20 July 2022
Excellent tragicomedy carried by very good actors , director and scriptwriter with an original and beautiful method to free oneself from the terrible anguish and the protective bubble that the car represents. I was a little hesitant after watching the teaser. But do not hesitate, you will not regret it.

Poor script
26 June 2022
Rather poor script. The movie isn't terribly scary and it quickly gets boring. The reality of battered and abducted children is far more horrific and frightening.

Fortunately, there is an excellent interpretation of young actors Mason Thales and Madeleine McGraw: if they continue like this, they will have a great film career.

The myth of eternal youth
17 June 2022
The myth of eternal youth as seen by Quentin Dupieux. Original and quite funny, and also a little sad since eternal youth is a myth. With excellent performers, in particular Alain Chabat, Lea Drucker, Benoît Magimel and Anaïs Demoustier.

A web of lies
10 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Very well directed and acted. And it's all.

Because the script is a web of lies. The screenwriter tries to make us believe that in real life it is possible for a 45-year-old oncologist and a 70-year-old woman to really fall in love with each other. It's absurd. And it's so stupid to make believe that older women would fall in love with oncologists while young women would be more seduced by emergency doctors... But in an ideal world where no one is afraid of the gaze of others? In an ideal world, the 45-year-old husband does not cheat on his wife and children to go with a 70-year-old wife, and the 70-year-old wife does not try to turn the 45-year-old husband away from his wife and children. Yes, but he is an oncologist specializing in experimental treatments : -> Just because he specializes in experimental chemotherapy doesn't mean he has to specialize in experimental love... And this oncologist also knows how Parkinson's disease evolves, and he also knows that many other diseases and a whole host of ill health can plague the daily lives of older people, and a fall is more likely to cause a femoral neck fracture than a simple bone crack. Each age has its pleasures and one should not mix the generations neither at this age, nor at an even more advanced age, nor younger. My thinking, and this kind of film won't make me change it, is: above all, you have to enjoy life when you're young because time passes very quickly, and you have to learn to manage your loneliness other than by drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes (the 2 characters in the film who suffer from loneliness smoke like chimneys) because sooner or later we are all alone. And no need for a cinema that pretends to have found an experimental sentimental remedy. I wasted 2 hours of my time. And the time lost cannot be made up.

Very good french movie
8 February 2022
So well directed and acted that it looks like a documentary about the political life of the mayor of a French city in the Paris region.

Perfect Isabelle Huppert and Reda Kateb, as usual. And supporting roles a excellent too.

Rather good movie

It's thrilling from start to finish. And it is not a copy of other movies. There are many implausibilities but these are the conventions of the genre and I am quite a good audience.

Beautiful and fascinating thriller
20 January 2022
Don't read the novel and don't see the movie of 1947 or forget it and you will not be disappointed as some viewers who expect the perfect transcription of a novel or the perfect remake of an old movie. This movie is based on a novel, it's not a copy of a novel. And above all don't read the slightest spoiler. And enjoy this wonderful thriller perfectly acted and directed in great decors. Some viewers seem to have not understood the story : perhaps after an exhausting day at work they have slept a bit or conversed with their friends or eaten too much pop corn or too much looked at their smartphones : too bad for a movie that deserves oscars.

Th best unintended comedy ever made
17 January 2022
If you see this film in the first degree, it is a disaster film but quite stupid from start to finish (for example : terrible car crash with no death and no wounds, Dwayne Johnson who is muscularly obese and gets always a helicopter or a plane way too small for him, and so on till the end). But if from the first scene you change the dialogue a little in your mind (it's easy, you'll see), you make it an hilarious comedy and you will really appreciate a movie that normally you wouldn't. And I wonder why the producers don't re-release the exact same movie with subtly crude dialogue done by a humorist to make it the comedy of the year : probably because they are too serious people. Too bad, they may miss a great success.

Sad
13 December 2021
What energy expended for such a mediocre result ! What impudence it takes for producer, director, screenwriter and dialogue writer to invite viewers to spend their time and money watching such a totally stupid movie ! And nobody able to tell them « stop, do something else, knitting for example » ? Sad...

Don't Look Up (2021)

Best comedy in years
10 December 2021
Remarkable satire of what the developed world has become. Men and women of power are only concerned about their positions. Whoever has a bit of power always wants more and the rich always want to be richer. The future of the planet has become the least of the worries. Everybody fight for power, profit and fun. In this crazy world some scientists are trying to keep their feet on the ground and to issue alerts but remain « vox clamantis in deserto ».

Great actors and actresses. Great director. Great team. Continuous humor from the beginning till the final generic. Often probably much too subtle humor. It's never a usual buffoonery. It needs focus and concentration and not everyone will like it because not everyone goes to the movies to see a comedy that gives a sobering lesson.

Tragedy
8 December 2021
The tragedy is still proposing comedies like this in 2021. Excellent comedians are doing what they can to save the film. Some dialogues and some short sequences are funny. But the subject is poorly exploited and without a good story there is no good movie. And what's bad in this movie far outweighs what's good.

Poor script
4 December 2021
Rather weak, predictable and full of implausabilities, barely worthy of a TV movie.

Good actors but not very fit this time. None of them give the impression of being in love. The film takes place in dream places (Mauritius and Geneva, for example) but not seductively filmed.

Not interesting.

Another fine example of the quality of Flemish cinema in Belgium. Subtle observation of a certain kind of toxic family relationships. The movie is so well directed and so well acted that it looks like a documentary.

Funny but pessimistic
22 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
7/10 for the general quality. But 1/10 for the very pessimistic vision of cystic fibrosis presented in the end of this entertaining and funny film for teenagers. It might have been wiser to choose another disease.

Excellent caricature
22 November 2021
Excellent satire of a certain category of journalists who make news into a product to sell like a bar of soap using proven marketing techniques, in particular that of making consumers believe that if the packaging is good, the product is good quality. Hypocrisy dominates professional and even private relationships. And the actress who goes from laughing to crying with great ease and constantly has to dress to woo her audience is perfect for that. This is worrying because every day many people spend hours watching TV or reading the newspapers to get information and, in the end, it is the journalists who decide what is important and what is not. , and what is important here is the show: the star journalist has to engage and retain the viewer or the reader, to make an audience, probably mainly to attract the advertising budgets. Taken in the first degree, the film can obviously greatly displease but taken in the second degree it is remarkable.

Marvelous
17 November 2021
Marvelous tribute to Celine Dion, very well directed and acted by the french Valerie Lemercier and a few great canadian actors and actresses. For those who expect a concert of Celine Dion, it is absolutely not. The movie is inspired by parts of the professional and private life of the world famous popular star, probably the best singer of all time, from childhood till nowadays. With humor, tenderness and great respect. It's quite a moving film : if you like to cry when you go to the cinema, don't miss it.

Warning
29 October 2021
Really very well done with comic quid pro quos and very funny dialogues but extremely black and gory humor. Some scenes can be very disturbing for sensitive people. It seems to have been made by French people especially for French people and not for American prudes. If you don't like it, definitely don't go see it and don't comment. You have been warned.

Boring
20 October 2021
It must be admitted that the private life of some great artists is one of depravity, drug and alcohol abuse. What's the point of making a movie out of it, even with great actors ? Even with good music and good songs, it's still a kind of talk show with conversations and private jokes between junkies.

Not a revolution
19 October 2021
This movie is not a revolution in the history of the films with submarines. The casting is not very successful : some actors look like naval officers as little as I do.

Anyway this movie would probably have been appreciated by Albert Einstein : it shows very well that despite appearances of great technological progress, the human stupidity is limitless.
