In the Company of Men (1997)
The first time I saw this movie...
was at a Brew-and-View that had lots of indies... young crowd... and over and over again, I found myself laughing out loud, not believing how horrible these guys were... and then I would be embarrassed for a moment... until I looked around and saw that everyone else was laughing! I couldn't wait to tell people about it, because it was so shocking and original. The genius of Chad as the villain is that he could be the guy in the cubical next to you at work... you don't need to be afraid of frothing, chainsaw-wielding villains... you need to be afraid of the ones that are standing in line with you to buy your movie tickets! You can run from a killer, but she had no way to know what was going on, and therefor no reason to even try to escape!
Superman Returns (2006)
Started boring, then just stopped making any sense!
Who could have possibly thought this was any good? It started as just dull, overlong, with ninety percent of the movie basically being people watching what is going on... and on and on and on and on.... I won't bother with any spoilers... because I would probably fall asleep typing them! Do yourself a favor... leave the memory of the first Superman in your head and save yourself from this pointless waste of time! Consider yourself warned! I can't imagine what Bryan Singer, a seemingly talented director who generally interested in storytelling, was thinking with this... who did he think could possibly have been interested in this interminable piece of mediocrity? IT IS AWFUL! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! YOU WILL NEVER GET YOUR 2 AND A HALF HOURS BACK...
The Kill Point (2007)
Thoroughly mediocre and predictable - VERY stiff dialogue
I had great hopes for this show, having really enjoyed Donnie Wahlberg in Band of Brothers and Boomtown, plus they used a TON of actors from the best show on TV, The Wire... and Leguizamo is always interesting, if a little erratic...
But the stiffness of the dialog and plotting really killed this... There were so many missed opportunities, where a truly well-written phrase or moment could have vaulted this into something great! (The toughest part was the soliloquies by the sniper, played by the same guy who does a remarkable job as Omar on The Wire, would babble on... give him some good material, and he would have KILLED it!) Nice try, and since it was a mini, I did end up watching the whole thing, but didn't really pay too close attention by the end...
HGTV Design Star (2006)
Strong Show, Makes Design Interesting!
I am not a fan of design shows (paint-dry TV), and I am very picky about my reality competition shows, but this one seems to be good for fans of either type of show. Good drama, good design, great host and judges (Clive especially is engaging and funny, without trying too hard).
This seems like it could be better than Project Runway, since there is much more going on than just sitting in a room and sewing a dress! Design is much more active.
Very nice effort all around, and I can't wait to see more. These shows always get better as you move along and get to know the characters.
