Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Must see, adults and kids
"Despicable Me 2" is one of those kid movies, that had the adults laughing more than the kids. This movie definitely delivers, and my kids and I had a great time at this one. The minions is what makes this movie so enjoyable, as kids will like them for them being yellow and weird looking, and the adults as they do things adults can relate to. (The song at the end is epic). Gru (Steve Carell) was great, especially his take on his daughter dating. I would highly recommend seeing this movie on the big screen. I saw it in 2D which was good for me, but I couldn't imagine 3D ruining it, like it does a lot of movies. This movie provides good family fun and is a must see 8 out of 10 stars-MUST SEE
It's in the Blood (2012)
This is how to make a bad movie
Had a little bigger expectations for this movie, which is were I went wrong. "It's in the Blood" started off bad, and ending in same fashion. There is not to much to this movie, its very confusing, not very good special effects, and very jumpy. Add all those up and what do you get? A waste of 3 million dollars. The acting was OK at best and that is not saying very much. A story about a guy and his dad lost in the woods after his dad badly hurts himself, when they realize they are not the only ones out there. That had me intrigued. Do not let it fool you, you will be wishing you were in the woods, not watching this movie. 3 out of 10 stars (very generously) -TV or don't bother
Dark Skies (2013)
Average at best
The only way this movie gets by as average is the acting and aliens (which needed more). Typical story line that we have all seen before. To much build up and not enough ending. Before watching this movie, I had very low expectations, which I am glad I did because I turned out to be an average film. The acting itself in the movie was good, which in turn probably saved this movie from just being absolutely horrid. If you like x-files, this would have been a very good episode, Not dragged out to be a full length movie, unless they put more scares and alien scenes into it. Overall don't expect much from this movie, but I have seen worse, 5 out of 10 stars-RENT IT
Crush (2013)
Not as bad as you think
"Crush" actually turned out to be a decent movie. If the acting would of been better, especially by main character Crystal Reed, then this would probably have been a hidden gem. "Crush" has pretty good twist that I didn't see coming. But I thought came a little to early, or the movie took to long to end after it.(For the record I didn't pay much attention to the movie case or movie itself but don't look or pay much attention to it, which is why I put spoiler alert as it gives the movie away pretty much. For the record I don't like giving spoiler alerts just for the fact, WATCH the movie yourself!) This is a low budget "Swim Fan" but with a nice twist, reasoning for the 5 stars out of 10. RENT IT
This Is the End (2013)
Seth Rogen at it again
Seth Rogen and writer Evan Goldberg (who directed with Rogen) hit it again. All the actors in this movie have great chemistry with one another, which is way most of their movies together are hilarious. "This is the end" is basically a joyride that will not let you down. Franco, Rogen, Hill, McBride, Cera and others will leave you with nonstop laughter in this comedy meets horror (Think "Zombieland" on drugs). They're no real flaws with this movie other than the "this will and could never happen" which is why you should just let your mind go and have some fun with this one. I give this 8 out of 10 stars - MUST OWN
Chained (2012)
Very good movie..
I was very skeptical of this movie before I watched it. But I was blown away, mainly by the acting of Vincent D'Onofrio. His character was so believable and sadistic, it had me glued to the TV. I think the acting by Eamon Farren was superb as well. The story itself was good and morbid. Definitely not a family movie, but not one to miss. The best part of this movie was the twist, and how it was executed. I did not see it coming and neither will you. I gave this movie 7 out of 10 stars, and usually on my rating system would be a buy it used, but this is one of those movies where the twist makes this movie one of a kind, its not one you could watch a lot. 7 out of 10-RENT IT (must watch though!)
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Started with such potential..
First off, I have no clue why this movie is so highly regarded. I mean I'm still wondering how that got so out of hand so quickly. I'll admit, this movie started off pretty good, had my attention, had an unique story/plot going on, then out of no where I completely lost interest. It had nothing to do with the actors, as I thought they all played their roles to the best of their abilities, other than one very annoying voice. Another thing this movie had going OK was the special effects/graphics. The problem is how the movie ended. That seems to be very common now days, especially in the horror genre. Directors/writers get going and going and totally wind up off the deep end. I give this movie 4 out of 10-RENT IT
Grave Encounters (2011)
Definitely worth the watch
Is this the best found footage movie made? No, of course not, but it is definitely an enjoyable movie. "The Vicious Brothers did a good job on making 3/4ths of it believable. I liked how the found footage aspect of the movie was of an "actual" TV show, rather than people making a home video. That to me is what set this movie from the others. All the characters are believable in their respected roles. The only problem to me with "Grave Encounters" is that it gets a little far fetched the more you watch, but in a sense it is the craziness and madness of what The Vicious Brothers aimed for. All in all it is worth the watch and good for a few scares. 6 out of 10 stars-BUY USED
Grave Encounters 2 (2012)
Grave Mistake
Well this is when making a sequel to a decent movie goes wrong. The idea was there. How they go about searching for the truth behind "The Grave Encounters" was there. How the rest was executed was a "grave" disaster. It starts off in its own, but still in a "been there done that" way, then turns into the first movie, only to go downhill quick. Before too long your wondering why am I still watching this as it is not believable or even fathomable in an imaginary type way. I understand they had to do something different to end the movie than the first, but they should have gone back to the drawing boards once they screened this movie and seen how ridiculous it looked and sounded. The reasoning for the 3 of 10 rating is, it starts out good, and has decent special effects for a low budget movie. 3 of 10-WAIT FOR TV
The Internship (2013)
Vaughn and Owen at it again
Well clearly this is no "Wedding Crashers", but "The Internship" did deliver. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson clearly are a good comedic duo. The movie itself had good laughs along with a good message. But like most movies it definitely had it's downs. The first I think would be the supporting actors (especially the ones in the group) seemed to be trying a little to hard. They gave some laughs but a lot of the times it was obvious they were trying to hard to deliver and keep up with Vaughn and Owens. The other big negative this movie had going was the pg-13 rating. I understand making it more appealing to a broader audience, but it was borderline R anyways, might as well make the best of it and deliver harder laughs. Last but not least, and I really don't like when they do this, but a good portion of the laughs were seen on the trailers for the movie itself. All in all a good movie with solid laughs. 6 out of 10-BUY USED
Side Effects (2013)
Solid movie..
In all I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Sure it got jumpy at times but in all it was a solid movie. I felt the cast was right on point with the characters in the movie. Rooney I thought did an exceptional job, sometimes had me asking myself if she was even acting. I think the biggest weakness of the movie was the ending, which actually had a good little twist, just all over the place delivering it. This movie is definitely worth the rent, just not sure worth buying. I think the problem with movies that have some sort of twist is how they go about delivering it. Soderbergh has the right idea in place, as he usually does, it just took a little bit to unfold itself. Overall solid movie with very good performances. 6 out of 10-BUY USED
21 & Over (2013)
Not as bad...
I went in watching this movie expecting it to be a completely rip off of "The Hangover". Well instead I was pleasantly surprised. Yes in ways you can see "The Hangover" in this movie, but you also get a movie in its own. "21 & Over" never gives off more than it gives, which is a bunch of laughs. If you go into this movie not expecting much you will be satisfied. Miles Teller does not disappoint in the movie as he is responsible for a lot of the laughs. "21 and Over" does have its fair share of flaws and dull scenes which is the biggest let down because of the timing of them. But if you want a good laugh and possible flashback moments of your 21st birthday, this should be watched with a beer in hand and not taken too seriously. 6 of 10 stars-BUY USED
The Paperboy (2012)
Could/should of been better
I was initially intrigued to watch this due to its cast. Now I'm wondering why? A narrative story which was hard to understand the narrator at times. The story itself started off decent, only to end up a little swampy. One of those movies where good acting couldn't save the life of it, but good enough for a 4 of 10. Veteran actors McConaughey, Kidman and Cusack were good and responsible for most of the entertainment of the movie. I felt as if I was watching an underwear commercial with Efron. Grays performance was solid in the movie but definitely wrong choice to narrate. Last but not least the direction the director was going was all over the place. Expected a lot more movie with a cast like this but instead got an hour and forty seven minutes of trying to figure out what just happened and or what was said. 4 of 10-RENT IT
