Terrence Malick: a trilogy review
24 February 2016
like it or not Terrence Malick has been making a bunch of interesting movies for the last couple of decades. his style or as you may call it "his way" of making movies has labeled him one of the most controversial directors working today. the last 3 movies Malick directed were in sequence: The Tree of Life, To the Wonder & this one. I have a feeling that they are connected or have a general theme recurring in them all that's why I consider them as three movies serving the same purpose or theme. starting from The Tree of Life (which in my opinion is the best out of the trilogy) is dealing with loss, coming of age, nature & life (it's important to point out that this movie is heavily inspired by Malick's memories of his hometown and his growing up) beautifully shot & accompanied by a mesmerizing soundtrack, I consider this movie to be his best in what you can call it "his philosophical take on life" the second in this trilogy is To the Wonder (which is the weakest one out of them IMO) is a movie depicting a troubled relationship & a priest fighting his inner self, this movie also is inspired by Malick's own experience & relationships. while I find it dragging, slightly indulgent and going nowhere, this was an interesting movie showing how Malick can deal with such a personal matter & making it to the big screen. we arrive here to the final one, Knight of Cups, where we find Rick (played by Christian Bale) is a lost, lonesome & a deeply distracted guy dealing with different people in his life, unable to find his true purpose or role in life. this one is also shot by the great Emmanuel Lubezki (who shot also the two before) but this movie looks different than the other previous movies in that this one is focusing on the materialistic aspect in life rather than true nature & its origin (we here have an amazing story reveling the hellish true of Hollywood & its core of existence) I found this movie to be meaningful and really look forward to seeing more of Malick in the future.
