V for Vendetta (2005)
One very tasty movie experience ...
This movie is a good one. I can't call it great, but it is real real close. It is a good thrill ride that will keep you guessing and wondering. I think you really need to see it more than once to get the full effect of this movie. The directing is very well done, as is the writing. The camera work gets very high marks from me. Action aplenty. One thing that really stands out in this movie is some of the great special effects used. It also has a very good pace which reflects highly on the great editing that was done. I had a hard time with some of the themes that were present in the movie. I also thought highly of the acting. All in all, a very good movie that I would recommend.
Die Hard (1988)
"Welcome to the party!"
John McClaine is one tough dude, as is well demonstrated in this hard hitting action flick. He also is one of the main characters, here to ruin the plans of a bunch of folks that are totally up to no good. John is rather inventive, uses his wits and slowly evens the odds he finds him self having to deal with. Granted, a large skyscraper is a bit worse for wear at the end. But at least the head of the company throwing the Christmas party that John finds him self a part of lives ... Oh wait, spoiler alert. But John did what he could to save the dude. The direction is pretty darn good, the lighting is excellent. The writing is top notch. It's just a little cheesy at times and is a little hard to believe as well. I found it to be a pretty good movie and can easily recommend it. Grab a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy.
The Great Escape (1963)
They threw away the mold ... there won't be another like it.
If you have yet to sit down and watch this movie, I have to ask what are you waiting for? This has got some of the coolest acting around. Steve McQueen is one amazing actor and he gets to do his thing here. It is actually kind of hard to describe easily what Steve brings to this movie. Granted, he is a main character, but there are plenty of those running around in this film. Steve though, stands out above the fray, at least in my book, and you root for the guy to get through what he has to do to get by. But being in a German prison camp can't be easy. These actors are pretty good at getting that point across, in spades. Life is tough behind barbed wire with marksmen watching over every move your making, or at least they are trying too. Thankfully, the Germans are not always as attentive as they should be. Sit down in a comfy chair, put your seat belt on tight and hang on, especially once Steve gets some horsepower under his butt. The ending isn't really, 'cause the prisoners just are not going to quit trying to leave.
Shichinin no samurai (1954)
An excellent film
This is a long movie. It took me a few attempts before being able to be able to watch it all the way through. I then had to rent the movie on DVD, back when you could do such a thing. I started to realize what exactly I was looking at, that it was hard to find any flaws in this movie. Granted, the setting is an usual one and the acting is different, in a good way, but you get past that, and start realizing that this is one excellent movie. The lighting, the camera angles, the writing ... all top notch. The story is taught, even throwing in some humor for even measure. The subject matter is downright brutal in many aspects ... taking a sword to get rid of your foe is up close and personal. There is no hiding from behind a building or a tree and firing a weapon. You are forced to get basically within arms reach and figure out a way to get the other dude before he gets you. I can highly recommend this movie, and be prepared to watch it more than once. Let this one kind of work on you a bit. You won't be disappointed.
National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)
It's not a perfect movie, but who cares ...
Have you ever watched a movie where you know that the people and actors had a great time making it? This film has got to be a prime example of folks having a blast doing something they truly love doing. The really neat part is we, the viewing movie going public, get to see and enjoy the end result. Is it a perfect movie? Nope, and that is why I only gave it a 7 out of 10. But it ranks up there at the top of one of the funniest movies out there, at least in my book, John Landis had to be pinching himself at times to be the director of this mess, I mean film. Especially once the movie turns to the poor town trying to have a respectable parade, total bedlam ensues. Stuff is going nuts, and there is just no telling what is going to happen next. What parade has a fake sword wielding pirate running amok? Watch this movie. Have a laugh or two. It won't hurt, I promise. You just might have a great time.
Rear Window (1954)
Alfred Hitchcock does it again with some superb movie making
Mr. Hitchcock really out did his self with the making of Rear Window. The lighting alone is something that is truly amazing. When the camera shows an apartment across the courtyard, you get to see what it is that Mr.Hitchcok wants you to see. You don't suffer, or the movie, because of too dark a corner or something lacking lighting wise. The director is on his game and is not gong to let any detail go unnoticed. Truly a masterpiece. The directing is taught, truly suspenseful, and not over done. You are too wrapped up in what is going on in this film to even have much of a chance to think about the directing. The acting is great as well, but I don't think Mr. Hitchcock wouldn't have had it any other way. James Stewart is great, just great. You feel for the poor guy, and having to put up with his broken leg is just icing on the cake. The writing is first rate as well. It's a great movie and it will not disappoint.
