Anything is better than being a white male, as usual
5 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Obviously every female is a superior warrior - stronger, smarter and more courageous than the male characters, particularly the white ones. Mexico is much safer than the USA. All of the minorities are civil, generous, welcoming, kind and selfless people. The white ones want to kill everyone else, as usual. Etc... In the end, one of the characters gives birth to a girl, which is emphasized... You know, as symbolism acting against "toxic masculinity" and "oppressive patriarchy". Because, as we all know, the world would be a better place if it were run by women and children. So many banal and tasteless metaphors, dear god... The only thing that surprised me is that everyone seemed to be heterosexual, which is rare these days, especially for a movie on Netflix. Anyway, if you want to experience some more woke leftist liberal agenda being shoved fiercely down your throat for almost 2 hours straight, then you will definitely enjoy this film. For me, it was a good sci-fi comedy, but also a complete waste of time. Hence 1 star.

Blonde (2022)

Boring and pretentious beyond belief...
30 September 2022
One of the worst films I've ever seen. Don't think it's because of any shocking content - that's just a commercial trick to get you to watch it. There's hardly any sex in it and anyway it's not even important. Ana de Armas' character is one dimensional, as are all her co-stars' characters. There's zero character development throughout. The writing is very poor and with many plot holes. Ana de Armas' Hispanic accent traces are omnipresent throughout, which is unprofessional. The most obnoxious part of the film is the pretentious directing and cinematography. They tried to make an art film out of this crap of a film by employing every trick in the book, blatant crude metaphors, lighting effects and switching from black and white to color for no reason so much and often that it made me literally dizzy... How about focusing on better writing and actual content instead?!.. I don't remember being so frustrated and just couldn't wait for this disaster to be over.. a film about nothing and total waste of time.

Cliché...
8 February 2022
I'm not a fan of romantic comedies, but I'm always open minded enough to give any film a chance. Hilary Swank is a very good actress, and this is the only reason I'm giving this film 2 stars instead of 1. Gerard Butler is generally a good actor as well, however... Yes, we get you're Irish, mate, but the accent and all of that.. so exaggerated and unnecessary. It's as if the screenplay read: "just be the Irishest Irishman who ever Irished." Ridiculously cheesy story, too many plot holes. This is a film that was destined to be a "blockbuster" because it address the issues of cancer and unfulfillable longing, aspects anyone could relate to... Except it's done in a very cheap and primitive manner.

Amazing film in every way.
19 September 2021
I don't understand the claims that this film had racist connotations. I'm not American, but this was an epic film with utterly grotesque scenes of violence meant to portray the horrors of slavery and racism. I don't see anyone complaining about Schindler's List, so this should be no different. This film is a reflection on historic themes that make American people feel uncomfortable, but in the end justice prevails. A truly cathartic experience presented in the most entertaining format.

Highly underrated episode
25 November 2020
For me this was one of the sexiest, least depressing and highly underrated episodes. It's unpredictable and actually quite moving. The whole idea of questioning your own sexuality and how it relates to emotional attachment is quite fascinating. Definitely worth watching!

Underrated
11 November 2020
This is another great D. Fincher film. It is a bit slow at times, but the very good acting and the directing makes this a compelling film. Since the Zodiac cases remain unsolved, this film doesn't have the same feeling of completion and finality as we get watching Se7en. However, it's definitely worth watching for the underlying tension and interesting investigation. And now it's on Netflix :)

A modern classic
11 November 2020
After Hitchcock's Psycho and Silence Of The Lambs, this is a true classic of the serial-killer thriller genre. Acting is very good (especially Morgan Freeman), but the directing is truly outstanding, and so is the writing. Honestly, almost every film and tv show nowadays attempt to copy Se7en, unsuccessfully. The dark atmosphere, tension, action, character development - it's all there, in the correct proportion. I just rewatched it, 25 years after it's been shot - even with knowledge of the plot and all the twists, much better than most films of the same genre presently.

Not scary and really stupid
27 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Basically the premise is that 2 (or 3) crazy brothers somehow managed to kill off an ENTIRE small town and turn everyone into wax sculptures.... yeah... The acting is poor to mediocre at best.... None of the protagonists inspire any sympathy whatsoever - everyone is just really shallow and dumb. The few "jump scares" are really lame and predictable, as is the entire movie.

Wow... this is The Room meets Mozart In The Jungle!
27 October 2020
As a professional classical musician, I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 because it genuinely made me laugh... First off, everything from the classical music point of view is absolutely ridiculous. A famous touring cellist who still lives at the conservatoire with her teacher?... This cellist's idea of a perfect 2-week vacation is low budget traveling all over China - seriously?... Aside from the poor acting and the out of tune cello soundtrack, there are so many ridiculous and hilarious details, it's worth a watch just to have a good laugh, especially if you know anything about the classical music scene. This movie is trying to be so serious, almost like Whiplash mixed with Black Swan, but instead ends up so incredibly silly!

The Fall (I) (2013–2016)

Started well but ended as a boring feminist propaganda
8 October 2020
I thought the first and half of second season were captivating, but then it just all became slow, monotonous and boring. Also, the excessive over-the-top blatant feminist propaganda gets really annoying... Basically, there are no positive male characters and the very few there are appear weak and obey the women around them. If you're trying to convey messages as a filmmaker, it needs to be much more subtle, not just showing how terrible and weak men are and how strong women are. There are many inspiring movies and TV shows that empower women, without resorting to such distasteful innuendos and gratuitous preaching. So many cliches, how women must survive amidst the terrible patriarchy, how "men are afraid women will laugh at them, but women are afraid men will kill them" (this is a quote), just such banal, pathetic attempt to cater to a certain audience, and not even truly succeeding at it in the end. What a shame... Started out promising...

Loved it even more on second viewing
3 September 2020
Breaking Bad is truly one of the most captivating tv series in existence. Great acting, writing and character development. The only reason I gave it 9/10 is that there are quite a few lengthy scenes which don't really contribute to tension building... but then again, any show this long will have some amount of filler, so it's just a tiny flaw.

What a strange film...
24 July 2020
This was such a weird experience... The film somehow managed to build some tension throughout, nearly without a plot, good acting or high stakes... I find this quite unusual and even admirable, hence 3/10. Other than that, this is not a horror film. It's quite silly and not worth anyone's time.

The Ritual (I) (2017)

Better than most recent horror films
24 July 2020
The Ritual combines so many cliche horror subjects: haunted house, witchcraft, insane cult, monster, etc., yet it turns out ok in the end. This is in part due to decent acting and also the director's ability of successfully building tension. Having watched it once, I actually rewatched it again shortly afterwards. Being a hardcore horror fan, I must say it's one of the better movies of its genre in the past few years.

Joker (I) (2019)
10/10
A relevant film
24 July 2020
I previously rated this film lower, but then I watched it a few more times and realized I was wrong. This is not a regular superhero/villain film at all... It is a reflection of the oppression most of us are subjected to... Nobody has the guts to stand up against the system and that's why this movie evokes empathy. We all feel something is wrong, especially with all of the pandemic propaganda, and we wish for someone to make a stand, but we are too concerned about the repercussions of our actions, and that's why so many people empathize with the Joker character. He has nothing to lose and simply doesn't care any more.

A good and relevant biopic
24 July 2020
Usually I find biopics you be annoying and cheesy, but this is a very good film. The scenes of police brutality, for example, were very powerful and I find them more relevant today than ever, unfortunately... Acting was very good throughout. Directing and writing were very decent as well. Finally, a decent biopic!

A typical, silly biopic
24 July 2020
This film made me want to rewatch Walk Hard and Spinal Tap haha... Yes - I'm a Motley Crue fan, and yes - I've read the book. This biopic is very cheesy and predictable though and the acting is almost always average at best. As for the "crazy" behavior and whatnot - I have spoken to several musicians who had toured the same venues around the same time, and they all said that this movie was only a "mild" version of what was actually going on, which was wild and much more dangerous. I suppose everything is very PC now, so it's not easy to show too much insanity, but still...

Poor plagiarism
24 July 2020
I'm not a fan of remakes in general, but this movie shocked me... this is a literal reproduction of the original, scene for scene, with the original musical score even, except with average/poor acting. This reminds me of one of those YouTube scene re-enactment videos. A remake should certainly not be a literal, poor re-enactment of every scene of a classic film. Ridiculous...

Dredd (2012)

Finally, a good remake/reboot
24 July 2020
I really like the old Stallone film, it was cheesy, ridiculous and fun. Dredd, on the other hand, takes a different, more realistic and serious approach. While many remakes try to go full-Nolan and overcomplicate everything in the process, Dredd is more to-the-point: it's a really good action/sci-fi film, one of the best I've seen in recent years. The stylization is very cool in certain scenes and the film is very straight forward and dynamic. I'm so happy they didn't try to remake the original, but rather found a different and still very effective angle.

Predator 2 (1990)
8/10
Why such a low rating?...
24 July 2020
Having rewatched all of the Predator films recently, I must say this is a very good film, still. Obviously the first film was a classic, but Predator 2 is an interesting take on the original, placing the creature in the city, instead of the jungle. The acting of the supporting cast isn't great, but Danny Glover is very good and delivers a more relatable, "human" protagonist character than the superhuman-looking Schwarzenegger. There are many fun action scenes throughout. A very enjoyable film worth watching.

Predator (1987)
10/10
One of the best films on Netflix 2020
23 July 2020
Obviously this is the best Predator film and one of the greatest sci-fi/action flicks in history. Having just rewatched it, I'm amazed how well it still holds up against ANY film of its genre today. The acting isn't "great" theatrically speaking, but it's perfect for this film. Most of the special effects are more convincing than the CGI of today... Also, so refreshing not to have to sit through an hour-long exposition: seriously, the entire "exposition" lasts a few minutes, and everything is crystal clear - this should be a masterclass for action directors and writers of today, because - guess what? Nobody cares about the personal/domestic life of a character in a Predator film! It's not Shawshank Redemption. Schwarzenegger's one-liners are iconic as ever, and the other cast members are also cool and unique personalities. This film is like the perfect burger recipe - seemingly easy, but has the perfect ratio of ingredients. Action, violence, tension being built, colorful characters - all in perfect proportion to the storyline and runtime. Plus one of the most iconic creatures/villains of all time. The Schwarzenegger scene with the torch (no spoilers, but everyone knows what I mean ;)) still gives me goosebumps each time I watch it. A great film, one of a kind.

Commando (1985)
10/10
A perfect action film
23 July 2020
This was one of my childhood favorites and I've just rewatched it in 2020. I'm going to disregard nostalgia of any kind: this film is the essence of what an action film should be about. Hardly any exposition, just good old-school, dynamic, enjoyable action. It's so refreshing to vicariously go back to a time when it was ok to not be pretentious and add an hour of freshman-year-philosophy when it's completely unnecessary. They tried to bring the spirit of the action film back in The Expendables, but ended up making a farce/parody, where all the actions stars of the past made fun of themselves. Commando was great, because all of the ridiculous one-liners and action scenes were delivered with utmost conviction. There is a number of great, "serious" films and Commando isn't one of them - it's supposed to be a FUN, feel-good movie. Schwarzenegger at his best.

Fun and entertaining
23 July 2020
Just rewatched this on Netflix and had a great time. I don't know why this film has such a low rating on IMDB. This film is exactly what you'd expect: acting is ok-not-great, an ok plot, silly writing and decent directing. It's a popcorn flick that you can just relax and watch without too much thinking. Good special effects and fun action scenes. At least this movie isn't pretending to be profound and philosophical, unlike so much of today's garbage.

A true horror film/a modern horror classic
23 July 2020
Easily Rob Zombie's best film. It's brutal and absolutely relentless. Great directing and perfect sense of timing - every time I felt the violence was getting uncomfortable and over the top, Zombie brought in some other element, such as comic relief, so I never felt like anything was excessive. Also, in the end the "bad guys" get punished severely, to the point you begin to actually empathize with them, so all the violence shown previously is somehow "justified" by this extreme act of vengeance. This film is easily up there with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), in that its atmosphere and tone are dark and nihilistic. To those who complain about violence and brutality - please just go watch something else. This is a HORROR film, not a Christmas special.

Halloween (2007)

Better than all other sequels/remakes
23 July 2020
As a fan of the classic, this remake is the only Halloween film worth watching, other than the original (and maybe Halloween 2). It's dark, grotesque, sarcastic and relentless, as one could expect from a Rob Zombie film. For me, the first half of the film is most noteworthy. The "origin" story is very convincing. Highly underrated.

Definitely worth watching
23 July 2020
I really like Rob Zombie's attitude towards making horror films - relentless, immersed in the classic horror tradition, unlike all of the whiny BS being marketed as horror in recent years. This is not his best film. However, its stylized nature and unique atmosphere definitely make it worth watching. Best film about witches since Argento's Suspiria.
