Le scaphandre et le papillon (2007)
Prime cinema..
Ever imagined being a total cripple? No, not losing your ability to walk, but losing all your motor functions; no speaking, no scratching your knee, not even shaking your head to deter an irritating fly off your nose. Imagine being the center of a sea of consciousness, where you may sense and perceive the world around you, feel and think just like everyone else – but just that? Imagine your only way of communicating anything is the movement of one eyelid, and just one eyelid? Can one persist only on memory and imagination, of a life that has been but is no more? The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Le scaphandre et le papillo), is based on a true story of Elle editor, Jean-Dominique Bauby. Jean-Do, as is called by his close ones, suffers from a stroke, and goes into deep coma, only to wake up with a rare disease called locked-in syndrome, described in the few lines above. A butterfly and a diving bell are likely the metaphors of freedom and appreciation of life, and the dire feeling of sinking, deeper and deeper into despair and helplessness. For a big part of the film, you experience the world only from Jean- Do's perspective, and you are left with no choice but to empathize; empathize in its broadest sense possible, to imagine being that person himself. There's a great distress, but there is humor too, and there is hope. The film is copious with astounding scenery, intense emotions, and the face-close-ups of beautiful French women. Watch it for yourself.
Dag II (2016)
Disappointing
Ideological plot, awkward acting, bad music and above all everyone is a darn hero? The only way this mediocre film got such a rating on IMDb is because the voters are almost all nationalists of sorts and got goosebumps watching a fairytale of a movie of their black and white, primitive understanding of the world.
Fargo (2014)
Elegant, Mysterious, Humorous! Definitely worth it
Within the dark and cold theme of this show lies different layers of perceptions of human affairs, human fragility and the potential of human evil. All mixed together to give us an elegant and well built work of art. Plus and contrary to many shows of the genre, most of the events are completely unpredictable. The actors did a great job in portraying the common psychological human traits without making it look dull or uninteresting. I would also say that it has many elements that had been shown in other great shows, and with a good outcome fortunately. The metamorphosis of character and black humor as in 'Breaking Bad', the conflict within police and the character's philosophical sense (though not very obvious) as in 'True Detective' the atmosphere of a tiny and kind of abandoned city which adds more and more to the element of mystery, just like in 'Twin Peaks', and finally the absurdity and morally weird acts and reacts of certain characters, just like in Quentin Tarantino's movies!
P.S: This is my first review and English isn't my first language so this might not be very well expressed or arranged, but I hope you will get something out of it!
