The Magician's Elephant (2023)
Great family movie
I'm not sure why this movie has bad reviews. The animation is beautiful. The story is unique and heartwarming. Someone said it's like frozen but I can't even see a correlation between the two movies other than there's a character that's a sister. I have a hard time finding movies I enjoy watching with my 8 year old but this one is a new favorite. There's a couple side stories that are actually fully developed, which is rare in movies anymore. It's just a cute movie about a boy trying to find his family and a town trying to find happiness again after a war. The animation and story make you feel like you've been transported to another time and place. It's just an all around good movie and I'm shocked it doesn't have better ratings or more people talking about it. It was a great find on a cold snowy night.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Just mean, not even funny
I like Adam Sandler and usually think he's funny. But this movie is just an all star cast being really mean and downright bullying someone portrayed as having a disability. Sandler plays an adult with a disability (which is problematic in itself) who's very invested in his town. He cares about the well being of the kids in town and his neighbors only to be incessantly bullied. He acts like he doesn't know he's the joke of the town, but everyone from teenagers to adults to cops are constantly playing tricks on him. It's nauseating to watch an entire town make fun of a man with disabilities. But then you remember it's actually a wealthy white man pretending to have a disability. I'm only like halfway through and I'm sure he somehow saves the day and become the town hero but it's just hard to watch. Regardless of how the movie ends and if the bullies are "punished" I can't see this movie having a feel good ending. Maybe that type of comedy work in the early aughts, but I feel like as a society we've (hopefully) moved past bullying people with disabilities. It's definitely not family friendly like some reviews say and it's hardly a halloween movie. Just a mean spirited "comedy" set in Salem on Halloween.
Absurd Planet (2020)
NOT for kids
My son (8) turned on this show and it was a nice break from some of the shows he watches on repeat. I don't mind poop jokes or potty humor. However. The 3rd episode is insane. The first scene is animals actively engaged in reproduction activities. There are many MANY jokes about "the oldest profession in the world" and receiving payment for such actions. Implications that "bigger is better" and actually outright saying so. Jokes about incest and infidelity. The 3rd episode is actually titled "male expectations" which is gross in itself. But the whole episode is basically saying men only want one thing and women are flirts and play games. Those things are normal in the animal kingdom but are personified in a way that is completely inappropriate to teach this generation of kids. I can't believe the narrator read the script and was like yeah this is fine. It's funny at times but the jokes are mature most of the time. Teens would be able to handle the humor but the content wouldn't keep them interested at all. I fully don't understand what audience this is aimed at.
A Christmas Karen (2022)
Unexpectedly fun
I turned this on for some background noise while wrapping gifts and found myself paying more attention than I realized. It's a bit Cheesy, but no more than most other Christmas movies. As many times as "a Christmas carol" has been redon, this one isn't half bad. I find the Karen trope hilarious and this was actually a really funny story to use it in. The same message is there, but scrooge is an entitled middle aged white lady with a bob haircut. She does all the stereotypical Karen things... asking for the manager, tormenting kids being kids, spouting racist and homophobic slurs... and is visited by 3 ghosts who take her on a journey to see how she really affects others. The actors are surprisingly good. The characters are funny. It just a fun silly movie with some holiday spirit. A good modernized retelling of a familiar Christmas tale. It's not going to be anyone's new family tradition but it's cute and worth a watch!
Trouble (2019)
Kind of awful, kind of good
It's okay for kids. Some parts have a lot of heart, others have a lot of cringe. It takes a lot of "influence" from Bolt (seriously trouble even looks like Bolt) and secret life of pets and pretty much every movie about pets. There are a lot of well seasoned actors who aren't left much to work with by the ones that are exceptionally awful. The squirrels almost ruin the movie. So much cringe. So it's good for kids but if you've seen one lost pet movie, you've seen this one.
Tom and Jerry (2021)
Did we watch the same movie?
I don't understand the good reviews. I have a pretty high tolerance for dumb movies made for kids. Or movies made for adults nostalgia. This is neither. My 5 year old was bored and I was amazed at how bad it was. The storyline is so bad. It's one of those movies where you wonder if the writers forgot where they were halfway through. Theres zero character development. Any semi interesting story is completely brushed over. It feels like every character is just allllmost there but not quite. The beginning problem isn't really resolved... just kind of put aside. It's just all over the place. And tom and jerry are sort of side characters. Definitely not the main characters, not even secondary characters. The interactions with humans just aren't well done and leaves you wondering what they're looking at. I'm honestly just not sure how they messed this up so horribly. Unless your kids drag you, skip it. And even then try to talk them out of it.
Siren (2018)
Siren SONG
Guys. Its named after the phrase "siren song", which is used in translations of the odyssey. In modern language its used to describe a woman who uses her "song" to lure men to danger. Or even more recently, it's used to describe something mysterious and dangerously seductive. I.e. the literal song they sing and also their allure to search for the mermaids after encountering them, which could potentially be dangerous since she's been hurting and killing people....
But seriously why does he dive into the water like that?!
