Gully Boy (2019)
10/10
One of the best movies of the decade
22 February 2019
Should you compromise with your dreams just because your present circumstances do not allow you to pursue your dreams? Zoya Akhtar answers the question with a solid No. Gully boy, for me is one of the few Bollywood movies that combine craft with wholesome entertainment. Everything , the acting performances, the dialogues , the cinematography portraying the Mumbai as seen from the eyes of a struggling rapper, the story lines is exceptionally done.

The reason Gully boy works is because the emphasis it plays on every character of the movie. Sure, it is the story of Murad played marvellously by Ranveer Singh, but the supporting characters have their own stories which are never sidelined in the movie. The love story between Safeena and Murad ( Alia and Ranveer) is unique and the chemistry is exceptional. There are several nuances in the movie that portray on screen the struggles and pain going in the minds of the actors.

The music is exceptional. I just wish we get to watch more movies like this. Truly worth the time and it will definitely have a deep impact on you.

Dhadak (2018)
5/10
The real failure is of the director!
23 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A remake of an epic Marathi movie, Sairat, Dhadhak does not even work as a stand alone movie. Comparison to Sairat are inevitable, but one really has to question the motive of the director to adapt a raw and real storyline and add essence of Dharma drama and beauty. The director, in my opinion failed to understand the deeper meaning of Sairat. The scenes which were important and truly soul-touching in the original were underwhelming in the remake.

The story begins when a young boy called Madhukar played by Ishan gets infatuated with a young girl called Parthavi (played by Jhanavi ). Parthavi's father is a highly ambitious politician who wants to win elections in Udaipur. The first half of the movie is fun because the director is in his comfort zone. We all know the fun parts in Badrinath ki Dulhania and they are here too. However, post-interval, there is no real emotion. Even in most intense scenes, the audience were laughing and giggling because there was no real suffering and emotion. The pace dramatically changes in climax which is ridiculous beyond comprehension.

The supporting cast which was the backbone of Sairat is a let down here. Even the lyircs of the songs seem out of place. The acting lacks strong spine which is where the director has failed. I do not think he was able to explain to his leads the real emotions and the details that were needed to shoot certain scenes.

In my opinion, this was a disappointment as per the hype surrounding it. However, it does have its moments in the first half.

102 Not Out (2018)
9/10
A light-hearted film that should be watched
8 May 2018
Summary: 102 Not out is a film based on a Gujrati pay by the same name. A father named Dattatraya Vakhariya, played by Amitabh Bachchan is a 102 year old man with a mind still young and body full of spirit. His son Babulal Vakhariya played by Rishi Kapoor is of 75 years and for some reason has lost interest in his life; or in his own words: "Has accepted his old age" and is annoyed for most of the time. On one of the Valentine's day, Dattatraya makes an unusual announcement of sending Babulal to old age home so that he can break the world record for living longest. He thinks that the sad and boring life of Babulal is a hinderance for this record. Babulal opposes and in order to stay in the house, Dattatraya offers some challenges to Babulal which will make him a jolly and delightful person.

This is a 102 minute film and all of the above things happen within the first 15 minutes. What follows is the struggles of Rishi Kapoor to complete each and every challenge and how with each challenge he finds happiness and tries to bring back his original self.

The movie though portrayed as light hearted from the trailer has many strong and intense emotional scenes which are played to perfection by all the actors. A special applaud to Jimit Trivedi who plays a strong supporting character in taking care of both the old people. Beneath all the fun and emotions there is a strong underlying message that this film succeeds in delivering to the audience. For me, in this film acting of Rishi Kapoor was slightly better than Amitabh Bachchan and he plays all the diverse emotions to near perfection.

The film is not a classic and in my opinion it does not aim to be so. The songs though are not particularly exceptional but they do give a boost to the movie. There are scenes where some of the old classic songs such as "Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam" are played and these scenes in particular are a joy to watch. The film, however, I think rushes to the climax hastily and does not deliver the same level of emotions that other scenes in the movie deliver.

The dialogues of the movie are good; not exceptional but good. They are funny because the acting is very good. Bollywood has made this type of movie after a long time. Should watch it.

Neerja (2016)
10/10
A story strongly held by the performances of the actors
1 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is based on the final moments of a model cum air hostess Neerja Bhanot, where she died on a hijacked plane in an attempt to save the passengers. Although many people watching this movie know the final outcome, the scenes beautifully powered by Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi are a treat to watch. The moments especially focusing on Shabana Azmi and her attempt to keep hope in times of despair are gut wrenching and will definitely leave you in tears.

The story stays true to the real life, with no extra melodrama and no unnecessary song sequences. This movie, unlike many other stories, does not specify from the beginning that Neerja was a brave girl. We are with her when she is frantic, when she is remembering moments from her past abusive marriage. We see her develop as a character.

Majority of the film takes place in the plane and none of the scenes appear to be wasted. One particular scene where Neerja locks herself in the bathroom of the plane after a certain tragic incident is beautifully shot. The director and the cameramen skilfully compare the abusive husband with the terrorist and slowly Sonam gathers courage.

Honestly, I am not a big Sonam Kapoor fan. I have watched some of her movies and the only movie that I liked her in was Raanjhana. But in this movie, she acts literally from every pore of her body. She pulls off scenes involving intense emotions and scenes with some respite with utter grace. We get a good ensemble of large supporting cast in terms of passengers and Neerja's family.

This is a film which will definitely make you teary eyed.
