Enough Said (2013)

I think this is hit or miss for people
1 January 2014
I think I can understand why someone would like this movie, maybe. If you're interested in watching a really tremendously boring, cliché depiction of someone's uninteresting life, this is your jam.

If you're not... wow, this movie was so terrible. Beyond terrible. It follows Christine Julia-Dreyfuss (who is cute as a button but so lifeless in this movie) as a masseuse and a tangled web she unintentionally weaves as a masseuse.

The acting is an attempt at dry humor but it comes across as the actors being just as bored with the story as the viewer is. It was just like watching an average person's life and it was so boring. Sorry.

Hollow (I) (2011)

Good, wish 3rd person
1 December 2013
hollow is good entertainment and what I expected. I understand the choice to do found footage since it's a low budget indy, but I would've loved to see what the director could do w a big budget. It had a great story and interesting characters, and I would've LOVED to see it as a 3rd person narrative.

Aside from that personal pref, I enjoyed the movie and am happy w my purchase. It's an entertaining movie with some unique religious overtones and is well done. Would watch again

PS - if you startle easy, be prepared for some scene changes that have really loud noises to scare you. It kind of lulled me into a false sense of security w the character development in the beginning and then scared me badly

awesome if you know what you're going into

This is a classic entertainment action flick. If you're expecting deep revelations to life, you won't get it. If you want great entertainment in what I'd say is what the majority of summer action flicks strive for - then Tomb Raider is just awesome.

I'm genuinely surprised that the rating for this movie is so low. Tomb Raider is one of the movies that I'll occasionally throw on when I just feel like watching a good action flick circa Mission Impossible. It's entertaining, it's pretty smart, and it's a clever adaptation of a video game.

I'm also a huge fan of the soundtrack to this movie. The compilation of songs is really great.

The Following (2013–2015)

Had promise at first, then fizzled out
3 September 2013
After watching the first episode in the first season, I thought that this had great potential. It... definitely did not live up to that first episode. Instead, it fell victim to aggrandizing and near-worshipping terrible people doing terrible things.

I also really disagree with the casting choices, aside from Bacon. He is absolutely great and probably one of the only redeeming actors. Claire is OK, as well, but the writing makes her do the stupidest things over and over. But here's my point: Joe. He's supposed to be incredibly charismatic to the point where you can understand people falling over themselves to devote their lives to him. I just don't get it. He's not charming nor is he good-looking to the point where it makes sense.

Sorry.

Also, I really really disliked how inept they made authorities look. Yeah, yeah, some of them can make stupid mistakes. But over and over in this series they're just bumbling idiots.

I get that they're trying to avoid clichés by doing the opposite of what most series would do but they went so far in the opposite direction it doesn't really work.

Now, aside from the fact that it sounds like I really hate this series, I don't. I watched all of it much to my chagrin. I'll probably even watch the next season.

It's OK but if you can't handle inconsistencies, consistent illogical actions, annoying character decisions, and disgusting worshiping of bad people, please avoid.

Revisited this after getting scared as a kid
19 August 2013
I watched this movie when I was young back when it first came out, and I remember that I was terrified because of it for weeks. Even the mere sight of average moths at nighttime afterward scared me for a while. So, for children, yes, it's pretty scary (or maybe I was a wuss, this is very much entirely possible).

Rewatching it now, this is definitely a good psychological thriller. I'm not a big fan of Richard Gere but he does an impeccable job in this film; he's charming and you begin to genuinely care about what is going on through his burgeoning interest. The art direction is also well done in this film and overall the story is pretty engaging.

Maniac (2012)

Creepfest
9 August 2013
This movie is disturbing and disgusting but if you're watching it that's the point. It had a lot of points that made me feel -- for lack of a better word -- plain icky.

Elijah Wood does a great job dialing up the creep factor -- he is incredibly believable as an unadulterated psychopath. Maniac recently got banned in some locales because of its content, so that alone says that it does well in the horror genre.

It's unsettling, creepy, gross. It does what it sets out to do pretty well. The direction is good in this film as is the cinematography; for a remake it was exceptional!

Thor (2011)

Pretty good, could've been better
4 August 2013
This is one of those movies that could've been great, but falls victim to formulaic Hollywood thinking.

Drop the unneeded quasi-romance and Natalie Portman, and you'd have a better movie.

I'm also not sure about the casting choice for Thor. I get it, and I get why a lot of people are probably ga-ga about the choice, but Thor would be better off if he came across as more intelligent (and higher emotional IQ). Thor is supposed to be incredibly strong but not a derpy brute.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. The fact of the matter is that the way the movie was done, you find yourself rooting way more for Loki, who is absolutely terrific.

Have a spin-off with just Loki, and it'd prob be a ten.

Wow!
27 July 2013
I loved this film. It was incredibly well done - the cinematography, direction, and writing were so great. And the acting! Viggo Mortensen is so great.

They did a great job in making the star horse emote and 'give opinions' as well. I have to admit, I'm a sucker for a good animal flick (within reason) if it's done well and not cheesy. This is just a good story.

The imagery across the desert are beautiful, although I think someone was a little overzealous (not that I can blame them) with the sun in the background on a horsey shadow. But it was all good

Very few movies these days (I know, I know, this movie is nearly a decade old now but bear with me!) get me to the point at which I'm actively rooting for the protagonist, on the edge of my seat.

This film was exceptional, I can highly recommend it!

Good enough, but not on par w old Die Hards
24 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Y'know, this film is just what I expected from it. Granted, it's a Die Hard flick so you would hope it'd be awesome and on the level of the first 2, but you have to keep in mind that it's 2013 and the entertainment industry is incapable of producing any movie with a semblance of intelligence.

Maybe I'm being a little harsh. The movie is entertaining. It has amazing action shots, and really well done special effects.

One thing I really, really don't get is why they made John McClane so effing annoying? He's supposed to be a badass, and in this flick (mostly in the beginning, at least they turned it down a little bit towards the end) he is just a bumbling dumbass.

Seriously, the first scene in which the action starts, he literally messes everything up for his son, and continues to ruin everything while just walking around yelling his son's name. Who wrote that scene?! It literally made me cringe.

I also thought the casting for his son was strange. He looks incredibly Russian, and would've been better cast in the opposing camp.

The daughter is incredibly annoying as well, but thankfully she has little screen time.

All in all, the movie managed to avoid the 'let's introduce the main character's kids into this sequel and ruin everything' trope. It was fun, it was entertaining, it had no artistic merit.

Cute zombie flick?
23 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I suppose that's the best way for me to describe this movie. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a good movie. But it's cute, too, which is a good thing because that's the point.

Zombie boy sees girl w hearts in his eyes, kills her boyfriend, eats his brain, sees his memories, and falls even more for the girl.

Speaking of the girl, it's pretty interesting that the lead that was chosen is one who looks like an attractive version of Twilight's Kristen Stewart. That can't have been an accident.

This is one of those movies that is an off-the-shelf date movie, or one to just enjoy on your own if you like zombies. I'm not interested in Hollywood pushing Nicholas Hoult down our throats (ugh, Jack, anyone) but he was good in this movie.

After Earth (2013)

Wat.
23 July 2013
This movie is a good show as to why nepotism and movies just don't mix.

Why did Will Smith have to subject us to this? I hate bagging on a young but really he has no business being the lead of a film (and lead he is, as Will Smith is pretty obsolete in this film). Maybe if he gets enough practice he'll be a good actor, but as is now this was a trainwreck to have to watch.

The premise at first blush is interesting scifi, but if you look further it is literally an ode to scientology.

It wasn't a good film and I resented being tricked into 1) watching Will Smith's kid stumble through a film 2) watching a film subtly trying to convert me to scientology.

Please skip this.
