School Rumble (2004)
Love this show
Even though the subject is not something particularly exciting for me, I can't help but keep watching this show. Really love the characters and their fun interactions. The drawings are nice, the high school ambiance is refreshing, and the story are pretty silly, yet without turning into non-sense.
The story is mainly about two characters. The boy loves the girl, and the girl loves another boy. Yet, all other characters in the story are interesting as well, and have more or less a love interest in mind. Most stories are pretty much about guys chasing girls and girls chasing guys, so if you're not into that sort of thing, then this show might not be your cup of tea.
Lastly, what I like most about this show is actually the music in the ending credit. For some reason, that song really sticks to me.
Sol Invictus (2021)
Really bad movie
From the beginning, people act like they know what they're doing but we really have no idea what the movie is about.
Eventually, we get the plot, more or less. The idea is this is some kind of competition on a deserted planet. This is a sci-fi movie, and the whole movie is filmed at the beach. I got tricked by the label sci-fi and the idea of a foreign planet, but really this is just a bunch of guys at the beach.
The movie is bad. I think normally that makes me puke would get a 1. It's not at that level, but it still gets the worst score for the following reason: - Not a single interesting character. I can't distinguish their personality and I don't even now any of their names. - Not a single smile for 99% of the movie. The characters try to act serious the whole time, and smile only to make smart ass comments. - This one ought to convince you: THERE'S NO SINGLE GIRL.
Dummy (2002)
It's not laugh out loud comedy, but it very nice one
So, I usually read a few reviews before writing my own, that way I make sure my review is completely biased! Actually I just don't know what to say usually but that's OK ;-P
So, I was saying, this is a nice comedy, not a laugh out loud one. I really enjoy watching it just as a movie, and that's how it should be appreciated. There were actually a few laughs now and then, but most of the movie is just smiles. It's just watching likable character having a good time. I'm halfway through and there's nothing really dramatic.
The nice points: - Very likable characters. It's enjoyable to watch their development. - Milla Jonovich's character: really likable, and a bit unique. I picked this movie because I was curious about her and I got quite surprised. - Gives you some kind of warm feeling watching it.
Other points: - It's funny in a way, but it's not really about funny jokes. Like I said, expect smiles more than laughs. - It's not overly dramatic, and a bit slow pace. -
Overall, yeah I'd recommend it... OK keep in mind I watch movies while surfing the web though, (hum, like right now ;-P). Hey, but I still enjoy it. Cheers.
Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters (2011)
An interesting documentary with character development
Normally, documentaries are informative, could be fun and interesting. It is rare that a documentary can make us interested in characters. This documentary has something special in. At a lower scale, it seems to have elements of stories, like character development, suspense, maybe even some kind of plot.
The documentary builds up to the final championship. What interested me most about this film: - First of all knowing all the tricks that players use to get insanely good at the game - Learning about the various records that people achieved - How they built up the character of Thor as some legend at the game - Watching and actually caring whether someone reaches a high score
Overall, the film is quite enjoyable. I'm not sure if it would be enjoyable if you don't know anything about the game. (but that would be quite unusual).
Galaxina (1980)
Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed watching this movie
I think due to the non-professional look of the movie, the whole time, I was convinced this was a student film, so thought it was great!
Yes, it really bad on the surface, but it has its charm. As a student film maker, you might enjoy these kinds of bad movie, because you feel like you could one day produce something close to that piece of crap!
I also liked the main actress in there, so I was sad to read about her after I finished watching the movie.
So to summarize the value of this movie, the acting is not great, the low budget special effects, decors and costumes can be reproduced with items picked up at your local goodwill store (at least there's no fake looking CGI), the plot is something you really wouldn't care about... In short, it's really the perfect movie for film students to watch.
