A decent family film
7 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love Scandinavian cinema, and really this was a fun and entertaining film. Like everybody else said it is a family film, but I don't feel that it is something just directed at kids, either.

That being said the most glaring issue I had was no real substantial resolution at the end. They build this entire mythos, based on Norse mythology, and surrounding this monster. However, once we get to the final battle the monster stares the protagonist down and then slithers away.

Norse mythology is a fantastic jumping off point and is relatively neglected compared to Greek mythology. I really just wish the ending was more satisfying than it turned out to be. Still a decent movie to watch, and appears to take a more Hollywood approach in terms of style.

Don't waste your time...

Warning: Spoilers
To begin, I am already not a fan of most found footage films, specifically when they use it as an excuse to cut corners. However, I will still give them a chance, and this film is the epitome of how some found footage films are just plain lazy. It is very clear they directly copied the story of Jonestown. The funny thing about this, though, is that the actual story of Jonestown is so much more chilling. Jonestown was a cult that started religiously but progressively delved into anti-American and pro-Soviet Union ideals. It was a cult that resulted in the deaths(many of which were forced upon people) of almost 1,000 people, and almost 300 children. The commune was turned into a gigantic mass grave.

Yet this film downplays all of it, at the end they have captions of 150 or so people dying, and that's one of the largest mass suicides in history? Give me a break. The great thing about filmmaking is that you can overplay it to make it a good horror story. I've never seen a horror film be so obviously from a real life event and then downplay it so extremely it has no scare factor to it, whatsoever. The picture of Jonestown, itself, is scarier than this entire film. Save your time and instead of watching this movie, watch the documentary "Jonestown: paradise lost."

Decent film, but could have been better
31 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Overall I did enjoy this film, and if anything could be adapted well into a Tim Burton film it is Sweeney Todd. That being said the problems I had with it was that we see several actors who play the same roles they have always played.

Johnny Depp has slipped so much into doing different roles that he ends up playing the same characters over and over. You almost wonder if Sweeney Todd, Jack Sparrow, and The Mad Hatter are supposed to be related to each other. Helena Bonham Carter is in the same boat. They also aren't singers and had Burton gotten actual singers/actors then the soundtrack would have been so much better.

It is worth a watch, and it's enjoyable, but it does have it's flaws.

The World Without US (2008 Video)

Huge disappointment, and badly put together.
1 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Going into this film I was hoping for an objective view of what the future would look like if America backed out of the world stage. As it turns out, all this film does is pat America on the back without showing both sides of these situations. You see a very brief history of warfare in the Balkans, Middle East, and the Far East Asia but you don't see the issues American presence has caused, nor does this film analyze whether or not our presence truly helps more than it harms.

To top it off, they did a lot of talking about the incompetence of the EU when it comes to their militaries, and why the EU couldn't handle it themselves. What they don't even mention is Russia, and how that would impact the world if America backed off the world stage. It is truly an uneducated and uninformed documentary(more like Mockumentary).

Not terrible, but not a responsible film
10 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well first of all mustangs are not wild horses, but are feral horses, it is a pet peeve of mine. This film overall is well put together. The reason for such a low rating is because it not educational at all, as a documentary, and has a somewhat dangerous message...

I started riding 20 years ago, and have since owned 3 horses, and seen all manners of irresponsible, and abusive horse ownership, riding, and training. This film just does not give a responsible message, and would have you believe that you can responsibly train a horse from I handled to well trained in 100 days. The truth is that truly training a horse competently takes much longer than 100 days, more like a few years at least. The amount of stress put on these horses just isn't a good thing in the long run. There is no reason to stand on a horse in boots, horses are not playground equipment. Too many people would look at stuff like this and think that this is realistic horse training, and some of these people aren't even that great at riding.

I know the BLM does this to promote adoption, but holding a 100-day training competition really isn't that responsible. Too many people own horses that shouldn't. So don't think that you will get any education, or any view into realistic competent horse training. It would be better if the BLM nixed the competition and just had some sort of program for people to train these horses. Less stress on the horse, and people can benefit too.

Not funny, or informative.
29 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As somebody who did enjoy watching Spurlock's documentary I wanted to watch this documentary because I thought it would make some informative rebuttals. I was hugely disappointed when it failed to do so. The few minor points it made were grossly overshadowed with ridicule directed towards Spurlock's. it got to the point were he made leaps from what was said in "super size me" to huge insulting blanket statements(racism, poor people, etc.). There is simply more to nutrition than caloric intake and they did not touch on that at all.

The reality of the situation is that our choices, specifically for very busy people(note: i am not limiting this to poor people) have become small. So nobody is physically forced to eat McDonalds, however, there simply are less options available. Not everybody who eats fast food is going to have a heart attack, just like not everybody who smokes is going to die of lung cancer. That doesn't mean that smoking is any less bad for us. Another issue I had was that he made some "point" about advertisement not being responsible, but he fails to realize that places like McDonalds are in it for the money, if advertisements didn't work they would not spend as much money on it. I don't agree with lawsuits aimed at the fast food companies for obesity as I do believe that is personal responsibility and perhaps even leading back to the parents. Again it doesn't mean that the fast food companies have no stake in obesity.

Bottom line is that if they had simply presented as a rebuttal without trying to ridicule and make blanket statements then I do feel they could have had some interesting points, but to me it was obvious that Naughton just wanted to capitalize on someone else's notoriety. I'm sure I could lose weight on fast food by being careful, but losing weight does not equate to being healthy.

About the Son of Sam serial killer known as David Berkowitz
29 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It's evident within the first 10 minutes that there is nothing that represents decent filmmaking in this movie. The characters and the story are badly written, the cinematography is terrible and I was extremely shocked to find out that this was made in 2008, it looks more like a television show in the 1970's. The editing was horrific, along with the effects. It appears the people who made this were 10 year olds using every possible effect simply because it's cool with no real reason to enhance the story.

I get Berkowitz was a nutcase, but it appeared that him and several other characters where bi-polar and showed specific emotions at certain times just because it was convenient at the time. Run far far away from this movie. I wouldn't be surprised if David Berkowitz sued these people for defamation of character.
