And Live (2019)
Promising start then falls flat
The first 2 episodes started out really good, but then as the series goes on, all of the characters just become less and less likeable. One of the characters who was conveying annoyance/struggles/self-loath was so over the top dramatic, it was difficult to watch because it was just so bad. It failed to draw out any emotion fully, and character development is really poor. It seems like I was watching something written by a teenager. After watching the entire series, I'm left with "so what is the point"?
I watched this right after "First Love" which has some parallels. It can't even compare, First Love really conveyed the struggles of broken families, single parenting, failed relationships, waiting to be with someone you love, moving forward no matter how hard things are. Don't waste your time watching "And Live" if you haven't yet, watch First Love instead.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
Honest, Confronting, and a must watch
I really admire Matt's patience and professionalism throughout the documentary. It's not just a documentary about the the current political and cultural issues surrounding gender, but also in watching this you really repeatedly observe how good some of these people are at avoiding the questions by walking away, ending the interview/shutting down Matt, or throwing nonsensical arguments.
This documentary has done a great job capturing both sides. At the same time it's really scary to see what society has become when the truth can be subjective, and it has become so difficult to have honest and open conversations because some people are unwilling and unable to hear any opposing or questioning voices at all.
But it brings hope that there are medical, educational, and academic professionals that are willing to risk their careers/reputation to say enough is enough, tell the truth, and put a stop of all this nonsense in order to protect the next generation of children.
