Very nice Soviet sports film
16 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is a story about a young man Vitya Kruglov, who studies at the Arts College, but has a passion to play football (soccer) with friends in the yard. Due to this he gives up studies in favor of becoming a footballer. He is accepted into the leading football club of the USSR Premier League - Spartak Moscow and begins to train hard, moving to his aim of achieving perfection in football, the game which he calls "the most beautiful game in the world". The film is also a story of love between Vitya and his girl-friend Nina. Vitya loves her very much, although he has very little time for her due to frequent and long trainings.

I like this film, and I desire to watch it once again. Very good performance by actors. Very nice plot and its realization. For example, many moments in the film were filmed at the largest stadium of the country - Luzhniki (then it was called Central Lenin Stadium); leading footballers of the USSR in the 1980s: Sergei Rodionov, Rinat Dasaev, Yury Gavrilov were briefly interviewed in the film. And a beautiful music by Mikhail Plyatskovsky, as well as not less beautiful song. All this charmed me in the movie.

This film must be seen by everyone!

Warning: Spoilers
The movie is about fatal for the Mankind consequences of the nuclear war. It is not said explicitly, in which country the plot is set. But from some details you can easily derive, that it was in the USA, for example - the main character says: "...from Niels Bohr to our President..." (Soviet leaders were never called "presidents" in the Soviet Union in 1986). Meanwhile, the reason of the war is stated as accidental and no one seems to be guilty of it: as the main character remembers, an operator of the central control panel desperately cried, that there was a computer mistake and rocket launches should be canceled, but he was late by 7 seconds, because he choked by the coffee and could not shout immediately.

The main character is a Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, who feels very confused that his science, either accidentally or not, led the Mankind to such a horror. There are also some other hopeless adults, all they are deeply shocked and desired. The main character try to give a little hope for a small group of children (all of them are shocked and never speak), and writes kind letters to his friend Eric (although there is no hope, that they will be read by someone). All people sit in a dark cellar under a (former) museum of history, some of them sometimes go out in gas-masks and special costumes to exchange canned meal for anesthetics. A strict police regime, the main policy of which being to try to save lives only for few healthy people, leaving ill ones alone and without any help, is established in the destroyed and burnt city. But even this "save lives" means "to hide themselves deeply under the surface of the Earth for more than 30 years". There is no any news, which could provide a hope, that in other parts of the Earth the situation is better.

Although quite a few special effects were used, there are some scenes in the film, which are horrible up to such a degree, that I was not calm enough to look at them. In the end of the film I even weeped a bit. I think, that this film should be seen by each human on the Earth. THIS should never be forgotten...

The best sports film I ever seen
9 April 2005
This film is about a young girl Nadya, who lived near the sea and liked to compete in swimming with her friend, a dolphin Fregat. Her another friend, non-professional provincial trainer, even did not trained her, just constantly suggested Nadya to show her skills in official competitions. He was nine years elder and had no other thoughts or wishes concerning her. But Nadya loved him and this was the main reason of choosing the "big sport", leaving Fregat alone for some time. However, while she easily, without any additional training, won (setting new records BTW) all events prior to international competitions, she could not swim well in latter ones. She knew, that million eyes are looking at her and feared.

Even I, who watched many masterpieces prior to this, was shocked, watching this film. The Great play by Galina Belyaeva, this was her first role, but she LIVED in the film. Very good play by other actors and magic music throughout the film resulted in absolutely fantastic atmosphere of the whole movie. I strongly suggest those, who think, that Olympic Games were always only doping scandals and Olympic Champions were always like cyborgs, to watch this film. You'll understand, what were Olympic Champions like in the best years of Olympic Movement.

I really don't know, where you can get it. I didn't found any DVDs or VHSs available online. I watched it on the Russian channel "Nashe kino", thats all, what I can say on this question. If you'll be lucky to find it somewhere, I am sure, you'll be shocked not less than I was after watching it.

One of the best Soviet movies
16 February 2005
Ten without any doubts. An excellent example of Russian humour, the movie for all ages! I watched it many times (10 or so), but it never became boring for myself. Natalya Varley (Nina) is excellent in this film. Every film becomes funny if it is starring "the three": Nikulin Vitsin, Morgunov. But even considering this, "Kavkazskaya Plennitsa" is a piece of great play by them. I also like this film for the song: "A Song About Bears". You know, that the unofficial symbol of Russian people is the bear. Hear this song attentively. I think, that it is about Russian people.

The best decision for those, who don't speak Russian, is the movie in Russian with subtitles in your native language. But...Try to turn off the sound, I bet, that you shall easily understand the film even without it!

The best ever movie (in my opinion)
14 January 2005
I was a schoolboy when I watched this film for the first time. The next day I knew that all pupils of our form watched it and all were fascinated by the film as I was. I think the same situation was in all forms of our school and in the whole Soviet Union. Later I watched it every time it was shown on TV and want to watch more. I think that comparison with "Back to the Future" or other Sci-Fi films is not appropriate. "Gost'ya iz budushchego" is unique in many ways, once you have watched it, you never forget it.

This film is full of belief in peaceful science achievements, full of belief in the beautiful future of our world. It's not only the film, but also a forecast of many scientific inventions and achievements. The time shown in the film is the year 1984 (the year of its creation) and the year 2084 (where a schoolboy Kolya Gerasimov has traveled for some time and where his friend Alisa Seleznyova was from). The year now is 2005, many inventions and achievements predicted in the film are not realized yet. Such as "Mielophone" (a device, which can read thoughts of any animal and human), expeditions to Venus and Mars (as easy as going for a picnic in the weekend), creating and launching of the satellites as a homework for pupils, easy to drive flying machines (which completely replaced automobiles), biorobots, "historical identification" of any kind of material or creature performed in a couple of minutes, and many others. Meanwhile, some of them nowadays became much more realistic than they seemed in 1984! Just wait for 2084 :-)

The film also depicts typical Russian schoolboys and schoolgirls (and does it so naturally!). With their inventiveness, curiosity, humour, dreaminess. Look for example at Fima Korolyov, you could find such character in nearly all forms of every school of the Soviet Union, similar character was in my form too! Alisa Seleznyova... I myself, as well as many my classmates fell in love at first sight with her! By the way, later an actress who played Alisa became a scientist - I think she was as much influenced by the film as people who watched it on TV.

Beautiful idea, beautiful realization, beautiful actors, beautiful music, beautiful song "Prekrasnoye Daleko" ("The Wonderful Far-Away")... Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...

The last thing I want to say is that different remakes and "new versions" of the song from the film and even the film itself were made later and spread on TV and in the Internet. All they are not even comparable with the original. I should not even comment them, my comment is only about the original. So, request the original and enjoy it!
