I binged all 6 series in just about a week. Before watching the final season, I checked IMDB to see if this was the end or if there was a seventh series in the works. While perusing IMDB, I noticed that the final episode of Series 6 was scored extremely low in comparison with all the other episodes.
After seeing this, I was prepared for a lackluster final episode/conclusion. Would the major villain, the 4th Caddy, be completely ridiculous and cartoonish? Would there be an over-the-top final twist? Would there be a cliff hanger with no real plans to wrap everything up? I was prepared for all these scenarios.
I readied myself for a lackluster ending. Then, I turned it on, and when it was over, I loved it.
What were people expecting? A Moriarity god-like final boss? Kate and Arnott to get together? Everything wrapped up neatly with corruption finally vanquished once and for all? If those were the things you were looking for, I wonder: what show were you watching for 6 seasons? Because Line of Duty was never that show.
The finale was completely on-brand and justified. Corruption can never be squashed completely. It will exist as long a man's organizations exist. The main characters fight, bicker, and hold each other accountable for their actions, but when the chips are down, they have each other's backs. And corruption, even widespread corruption, is the not typically the result of a highly intelligent and coordinated cabal of evil masterminds. Corruption flourishes when stupid, greedy people make selfish decisions. These were the themes of the show for its entire 6 series run. And these were the lessons of the final episode. A happy ending? A cartoonish villain? No, just characters that ring true. "Good guys" that are not perfect or infallible. "Bad guys" that are spurred on by their selfishness and a measure of stupidity.
Great show. Fitting finale.
