Neru (2023)
Good movie, but could have been a bit more better..
To start off, this is a good court room drama and the issues may be important as well. Jeethu Joseph is known for his meticulous research on subjects, finding inadequacies in our systems, weaving a convincing story around it and calling for a change. Big fan.
Where this movie is lagging is in the casting and acting. Mohanlal is a very good actor, but may not the right one for this role. I dont think there was anything in this role to benefit from his experience or ability.
The lead of this story should have been Anaswara, but bringing a highly popular actor like Lal distorted the whole movie. I also felt Jagdeesh was too dead pan as the father and ,well, where is the fury! What was the purpose of Priyamani's role ?
Take Off (2017)
Well done movie
Appreciate the effort by the producers to bring this very relevant real-life story to the mass. The movie has vividly portrayed the resilience of the nurses (and malayalees in general), the seriousness of the situation and avoiding the cliche that the antagonists are straight from hell. Beyond that the movie is a criticism to the Kerala society's disrespect to nurses (salary) while even terrorists in a war torn country could value them more.
Mostly done well, at times I felt the pace too slow or fast. Acting is mostly done well with good performance from Parvathy. Kunchacko Boban's role was totally unnecessary though he acted ok.
Bro Daddy (2022)
Easy to watch with light themes
Almost every scene in this movie is easy on the eyes: camera angles, cars, houses, glamorous actors and even the dialogues. You could really sit there for the whole movie awing at the luxuries at display, the glamorous(and popular) actors floating around in these worlds or the problems a certain upper class might theoretically have.
But this movie lacks an impactful story, purpose (except
a dignified money grab), or even a message! It looked like an exhibition of luxury items where we would be charged a movie ticket for entry. Waste of time, unless thats why you are after and you dont mind calling that entertainment.
Kurup (2021)
Interesting and a good take on the mysteries around Sukumara Kurup
Its an interesting take on the events surrounding the notorious fugitive, Sukumara Kurup.
I appreciate the boldness to make the events into a story and movie. It is a very touchy subject in many circles. The way the story unfolded and the use of narratives from the perspectives of those involved was nice.
I only have two gripes about the move:
Indrajith should have been casted as Kurup. Dulkar is talented, but the role required an actor who could bring in a bit of darkness and depth.
Movie should have ended when Indrajith left after taking the diary. This would have brought in a closure for the story, which we all wanted. Instead, the movie took the "Don" line and spoiled the whole story in my opinion!
Minnal Murali (2021)
Entertaining, but copied a lot from the movie, Shazam!
On the plus side, the acting looks good, CGI is a lot believable and the story is interesting.
On the minus side, its a remake of Shazam or heavily borrowed from it, and the movie is dragging at places.
Elysium (2013)
A well thought of Sci fi
Unlike many of the harsh comments and reviews I read about this movie, I found the movie quite entertaining and relevant.
I watched this movie last day in Sydney. I have to admit that I went to theater to see a District 9 kind of movie and came quite satisfied with what Elysium had offered. District 9, in its essence, painted the apartheid in Africa with a extraterrestrial brush. Elysium painted the refugee and immigration ugliness with the future and did a good job in doing so. What would happen if the entire earth becomes a refugee camp!.
The computer graphics were pretty impressive. Elysium (the city) was a piece of art and the space ships looked cool and realistic. Acting was generally above par and captivating at times. Matt looked very believable and he had that balance in acting without overdoing. Blomkamp, I believe, fitted the whole thing together marvelously as he has done with the District 9. However, I really dint like Fosters acting. She looked a bit misplaced and found struggling to express at many places.
This movie is definitely worth of the money and I would recommend it to anyone as I did to my friends.
