The American Ruling Class (2005)
TARC- An investigation into politics that is long overdue.
Lapham narrates and guides two young investment banker wannabees through a post-modernist adventure into the private lives and thoughts of some of the America's most interesting and powerful people. If the information that Lapham attempts to distill from this powerful and effective documentary could be related to more people, perhaps the country would be in better shape. The movie is at times sad and frustrating-the nickel and dime singin' working class dignity is a poignant revelation- but overall it is a vision of hope for the future. I am not familiar with Mr. Lapham's political inclinations, but the film achieves a remarkable milestone, clearly identifying problems in contemporary America without assigning blame. The whole thing reminded me of Barak Obama's winning attitude and the hope of an intelligent and bi-partisan, or at least meritocratic solution to the world's toughest problems. The film suffers from a bit too much cuteness, but I have never seen such efficient use interviews with people that really matter. If you are interested in politics, history, or just care a lot about humanity, this is essential viewing.
The New World (2005)
Great film in all regards.
This was much better than I expected. No flag waving, and it wasn't a Farrell stinker like Alexander. Just finished a year of American historyat university and noticed the film's director did a good job of dodging historical-political missteps-portraying natives or colonists harshly. There is no "bad guy" other than a few rotten-mouthed English. It just shows how surreal the whole experience must have been for everyone. Imagine how natives must have felt to be brought to England-mind exploder, dude. Sad and dramatic, yet enough action and visuals- pleasant enough to watch with your girlfriend. The musical score made me go out and buy some Wagner, too.
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Hi you guys!
I've seen the ass-end of the 2 hr trailer and the first 3 episodes aired here in Canada and I thought they were great. As a welfed out student who has to endure lots of the crap on t.v. to kill time, I honestly think that BSG is a thinking man's show with superb actors. C'mon, EJ Olmos and Mary Macdonnell? If Hollywood didn't pander to the lowest common denominator these two would get the respect they deserve. Remember Blade Runner and Donnie Darko! Other characters, especially the daytime hallucinating scientist are brilliantly portrayed. There is some great up and coming talent in the cast and I look forward to the day they replace Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt. (No offense dude, just too many movies). The space scenes are beautiful and believable. That kinda "zoomy inny zoomy outty" camera trick makes you forget that you are watching CG. The spacecraft move as I'd expect them to with no resistance. The flight formations remind me of the computer game "Homeworld"-Game of the year in 2002 or so. I haven't liked a TV series since ... ever, but I'll tune in to this one for its rapid pace, intrigue and respect of my intelligence. And I'd probably drink that short blonde haired pilot's bath water. Sex sells, aight?
