Vic Reeves Big Night Out (1990–1991)

Fantastically surreal
25 April 2009
To me, this is/was the best television programme ever - simple as.

There's something about BNO that has stuck with me since I first saw it in the early nineties. It was cheaply made, a minimal cast, yet for that it was honest and ridiculously hilarious. It has a natural funniness that I've just not seen on anything since - it just didn't try too hard, it was just that funny.

But as a couple of reviewers have said here, either you get it or you don't - there is absolutely no middle ground. You won't 'half' like it. It is truly silly - but intelligent at the same time. Part of its humour is the way lots of different comedy concepts are seamlessly included - verbosity, falling over, sarcasm - it works on many levels. But there you go - I'm over-analysing.

Just watch it; if you don't find it funny, you've lost nothing. But if you do, you might have just discovered what you'll see as the funniest thing ever.

Absolutely hilarious

This is one of the funniest films I've ever seen. It's a shame that many people that have commented on this have completely missed the point. Contextually there is almost nothing offensive about this film. Well, perhaps that's not true. But it is amazingly funny. Literally I was laughing every couple of seconds, it's that good. Not often does a film come out that keeps you laughing all the time.. but this has managed it. It's probably the biggest continuous laugh since Blazing Saddles.

Some of the stuff that's featured is literally, unreal. The hotel scene is perhaps the funniest thing I've ever seen. It's shocking but my word, it's funny.

I'm impressed at the number of US reviewers who have seen the funny side of this film and can take someone taking the mick.. rather than being offended.

Did you see what was in the fridge?

Great Film
5 February 2005
This is one of my favourite films. One of the things this film succeeds in is recognising the fact that political correctness is not always the way to go. Racism is pushed high up the agenda - but purely in MB's typical way of mocking it to prove the point. It's a shame that such a film would not be made nowadays; by sending-up racism it does more to condemn it that by pussyfooting around.

Anyway, rants over - it's a very funny film, with some great one-liners and of course there's the famous bean-eating scene. It's funny the first time you see it - because of the way the unexpected happens - but also because of things going on that you recognise on the umpteenth viewing.

Highly recommended from me.
