A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
A great movie
Really enjoyed this very clever comedy. Woody Allen is always good, the movies always entertaining. Nothing happens as you expect, but the ending doesn't surprise you although when it happens you realise you would have accepted any of many possibilities. To be enjoyed, this is the movie they tried to stop us seeing. Mores the pity.
The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
Not particularly original.
The actors are, of course, very talented and perhaps that saves this boring and rather silly movie. Not exactly science fiction, nor really a comedy, not exactly about angels secretly managing human destiny. No real point to the story except of course ambitious people who discover the true meaning of life. Not worth watching.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Not very good.
Disappointing and somewhat predictable.
This is a story about a woman who has mental issues who witnesses a murder and is persuaded that it is all her imagination. We spend the movie wondering if she has imagined it or not.
Then there is the issue of a person living alone watching the windows of apartments on the other side of the street. As unrealistic as Rear Window when James Stewart did the same. No one in real life is ever able to see so much of people's lives through open windows. Normal people use curtains, blinds etc. But here the windows give unhindered visual access. Completely unreal.
Worse than that, this movie is a bore.
Sorry.
Fugitiva (2018)
Very poor.
Turned it off after episode three. Not worth sticking to the end in my opinion. The characters make decisions which don't make sense and you know what is going to happen long before tragedy strikes.
The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
Very funny spy movie.
Very funny exciting movie about two girls who get involved in a spy adventure. Great comedy.
Central Intelligence (2016)
Not very good.
From the very first scene it is evident that this going to be awful.
Not only is it somewhat hysterical, the characters poorly drawn, the main character has been married for twenty years to a woman who seems completely devoid of empathy.
The values of course are those of the class bully. A terrible scene in the first minutes of the film where high school bullies throw a naked fat boy into the centre of a school ceremony. Not only do all the students laugh at this outrageous act but the school authorities seem to acquiesce in a kind of 'boys will be boys ' attitude.
The same victim of bullying years later reappears now no longer fat but taller and with a well built body. He is also now apparently very attractive to girls who immediately throw themselves at him.
Another nasty scene in a bar where he and his companion have to face some bullies and of course he proves himself to be an expert in unarmed combat.
Wrong values, almost incomprehensible dialogue, and an atmosphere of ear splitting hysteria.
That's when I turned it off and found another movie.
Maybe it got better, but I doubt it.
Bliss (2021)
A remarkable movie
Very profound and well structured movie which will leave you thinking. Well worth watching.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Great movie
I thought readers may like to read this which I copied from Wikipedia.
A report published in 2010 by the U. S. Government Accountability Office looked at 20 selected closed cases in which guardians stole or otherwise improperly obtained assets from clients. In 6 of these 20 cases, the courts failed to adequately screen guardians ahead of time and appointed individuals with criminal convictions or significant financial problems, and in 12 of 20 cases, the courts failed to oversee guardians once they had been appointed.
In October 2017, The New Yorker published an article looking at the situation in Nevada in which professional guardians sometimes have a number of clients, and argued toward the conclusion that in a number of cases the courts did not properly oversee these arrangements. In 2018 the investigative documentary "The Guardians" was published, alleging "legal kidnapping of elderly people" in Nevada by private guardianship businesses with no familial or other preexisting relations to their wards, seeking to economically profit from seniors' savings.
Run All Night (2015)
Heavy going.
Starts out well with a great cast. But it loses its way very quickly.
The movie appropriates the plots of just about every gangster film you've ever seen and adds some extra just for you.
The script deteriorates and becomes more hackneyed as the film continues.
A pity because the beginning is promising. You watch it till the end because after getting so far you want to see what happens, but the ending is very predictable.
Little Italy (2018)
Some good jokes
Not really a great film. Some good gags, you find yourself laughing just when you're thinking of turning it off and leaving it for impossible. I watched it until the end. You can watch it, there are funny parts, the characters draw you in, but it's not a good movie.
Crisis in Six Scenes (2016)
Very funny.
This is a very entertaining Woody Allen comedy. Maintains the humour to the end. Clever plot. Well worth watching. Enjoyable six episodes.
Absolutely Anything (2015)
Very Funny
Very, very funny movie. The humour was maintained throughout the film.
Wanted (2008)
A truly dreadful movie.
Can't imagine how so many great actors in such a horrible film. Sorry.
Long Shot (2019)
American humour at its best.
This movie is very funny. Predictable with a warm and wonderful ending but it would be churlish to dislike it for that reason. Well worth watching. Some very funny parts.
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Not bad.
I rarely like this kind of American farting film, but this one was very good for its genre. Normally I would turn something like this off after ten minutes. This movie I watched to the end. Very funny, although, more sophisticated humour would have been more gratifying.
Los futbolísimos (2018)
Great movie for kids.
I saw this at the cinema last summer and have now watched it again on DVD. It was, I remember, extremely popular during the summer much to the chagrin of Spanish film critics who tend to be terrible snobs when reviewing Spanish films.
The comedy works, the story entertains and the characters draw you in.
Well worth watching if you want to spend a fun two hours.
