Shania: A Life in Eight Albums (2005)
I really don't know...
if Shania: A Life In Eight Albums is accurate in the details or not, since I am but a fan of Shania. To me, it depicted a pretty good version of her life, having read books and articles about her.
The acting was okay, it seemed unnatural at parts which made the film awkward to watch. Especially scenes between the mother and "teenage-Shania". Overall, I think the whole surreal story was generally very intriguing. The actress that played Mary Bailey was great and really made her character the maternal figure that was lacking in the film.
The best part I thought was the beginning, where the youngest version of Shania was singing in a bar in the middle of the night. First of all, WOW! What a talented singer! Second, it was the only acting that seemed real. Mother pressuring young country star potential to be the best she can be. And from what I've read, it was the most accurate.
There were a couple undeveloped plot-lines such as when the mother left home in a rage of fury and was back in a matter of scenes sitting on the couch laughing.
In my honest opinion, this film failed to compare to what Shania is now, and if I had filmed it, I would've taken a completely different approach to make the star's history as important as her present life because it's what got her where she is now. It was just really difficult to compare this to one of the greatest musicians of our generation.
Elvis Has Left the Building (2004)
It was good, bad and okay.
For a 10-year-old, this is an entertaining movie. Funny but far-fetched and at times, stupid and slow. But a good pace for a kid.
But I am not ten, so I didn't LIKE it, but it was okay.
I liked the idea of Harmony Jones, and the flashbacks. They added a LOT of much-needed charm to the movie. Harmony and her accidental/coincidental Elvis-impersonator killing spree I thought was a hilarious idea, and Kim Basinger played the part actually very well. But the overall execution of it was what brought the movie down. Actually, the detectives brought the movie down...
The problem with the movie however, was the lack of development with the Miles character, and Sean Astin's character and his place in the movie. Basically, he talked to Miles on the phone and had no relation to Harmony which made his character hard to place. Also, a grave mistake was that they brought in the Miles-and-Harmony "love interest" way too late. Another thing I really didn't like were the dynamic-duo cops. They really made me cringe.
But a definite high point was Kim Basinger. She did very well in the roll of Harmony Jones and the flashbacks really let you love her character. Another good thing was Las Vegas. Its already unreal setting gave the Elvis-impersonators a welcome stage.
And I loved the pink cadillacs. It made the movie look like it at least tried to be good.
Red Eye (2005)
The first movie that made me actually scream in the theater!
First of all, WOW! The thing that surprised me about this movie the most was how unexpected everything was. It was completely unpredictable. Which made it a lot scarier than it really was. I mean, there were a couple things I got from the trailers, but not a lot. This movie is practically cliché free! The film was probably 90 minutes long and I was sucked in. Entirely transfixed the entire time.
This movie overall was awesome, the characters were so realistic, Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy really charm you and make the story terrifyingly real... contrary to popular belief that movies that take place on airplanes suck: I think with this movie and 'Flightplan', that belief will soon become an urban legend.
Do you think in four months they'll show this movie on airplanes? Y'know the complimentary movie? Hehe.
