Nope (2022)
A taste of disappointment
This is one of those films that the trailer managed to sold well. However, the whole product leaves you with a taste of disappointment and, honestly, considering this a horror movie is a big stretch. Sci-fui/mistery/thriller, that I would understand.
It has a weak/slow beginning, and the whole plot, which is sustained in an interesting idea, is badly exploited. You have almost two hours of built-up, and suddenly the film rushes in the last 10/15 minutes. Besides that, there are elements that, in my opinion, don't really bring any substance to the plot, like the Gorky rampage flashback or the Antler Holst final scene.
I recommend watching this movie in case you don't have any else available.
Death to 2021 (2021)
Much worse than "Death to 2020"
As the previous "Death to 2020", this comedy special is a USA vision of this year coming to an end. This is not really a problem to me. Although, I enjoyed in a certain manner the previous movie, the 2021 edition did not bring anything new, with a terrible script and easy, humorless gags. The unique line that gave me a smile was «The bizarre beliefs of hard-core anti-vaxxers means a significant number still insist on their right not to get the shot. Unfortunately, COVID still insists on its right to infect and kill them.» Besides this, this movie felt like a waste of time.
Za granyu realnosti (2018)
Poor Banderas...
An interesting idea, interesting CGI, but a completely mindless screenplay. The dubbing is weird so dialogues, besides the horrible screenplay, sound really strange. About Banderas, I'm still trying to understand how he got involved in this, let's call it, movie. Is his career going downhill?
In few words: Awful to watch...
Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
Not great, but you can give it a shot.
This is one of those movies I just get to know while zapping. Because I enjoy historical epic movies (and yes, the adjective "historical" is a bit stretched but let's overpass that discussion here), I took the opportunity to watch it.
For what I had the opportunity to read after it, there are many negative reviews about this movie, still one common positive note: Christian Bale's performance is really something, and it might definitively save the movie. His role as Moses, portrayed as the general he always was, grant a different view of the classical Moses.
Also, there was an attempt to give the ten plagues some sort of logical explanation, but with their root in God Himself, and the great landmark of the Hebrew Exodus, the parting of the Red Sea, was presented in a more, let's say, less divine way. All of this gave the movie a different atmosphere, with Moses and all the events related to the liberation of the Hebrew people a more human touch.
It might not be a great movie, but the way the Exodus is presented, and the performance of Christian Bale, make it at least interesting to watch.
T-34 (2018)
Russian tank crewmen kicking a few German butts
This is one of those movies that I just got curious while I was zapping for some entertainment on Friday night. Rated with 6.7 out of 10 at IMBD, and because I like the WWII gender, I decided to give it a try.
The opening sequence got me. There was no way I would stop watching the film. Battle sequences, the mind games, the strategy, all these ingredients were carefully balanced, turning this movie into an interesting story to follow. There were other details. The sequences related to the concentration camp also gave us a glimpse of the cruel reality.
However, there are some shortcomings. The first one was the obvious "the hero finds his true love" cliché. Well... one can live with this one. Then you have a set of major errors, particularly from the German side (of course!) that I can hardly believe they could happen. However, the final sequence... here is where I think the movie lost its momentum. I'm not going into details to avoid spoilers, but, in my humble opinion, I don't think that some of the mistakes as well as the final battle sequence would be plausible in a war scenario. I'm not a military myself, just an opinion.
This is definitively a patriotic movie. The defeat of the German Nazis by the Red Army, but - hey! - you can find of those as well in the wester cinema, so no big deal.
All summed up. It is a good action movie to watch.
Side note: unfortunately, I watched the American dubbed version where all the Russian characters "speak" English. The audio is just awful. In case you really want to watch this movie, try to get the original version.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
This is an example of "I don't know how to drive this story"
This is another of those movies that at the trailer seemed to be an interesting idea, specially if you add up the cast that is announced. Well, it turned to be another disappointment. Besides some cameos, some nice gags, several movies references, and some sort of "moral of the story", the movie becomes boring, as if the director did not know exactly what to do or even how to end it properly.
Still, if you don't have anything else to do or watch, well... it is still nice to watch Murray acting.
Sai de Baixo: O Filme (2019)
This was a really, really bad idea
Oh, well... the entire movie was a sad disappointment. I admit that I was a fan of the TV show (well, not a huge fan, but still I enjoyed watching it), so I had some expectations on this movie when it was announced. It starts on with a situation long foreseen in the show: Caco Antibes is in jail because of one of his schemes that went wrong (again), and the whole plot begins on his release day. This point forward, the entire screenplay goes downhill: nonsense situations that have no humor and a very poor direction that confuses stage acting with movie acting. In few words, this movie turned to by a total disrespect to the original idea of the TV show.
The Social Dilemma (2020)
Hard to believe that a lot of people didn't know they're the product of social media
Besides some inside information, this documentary does not truly bring new information on the way the social networks perform to engage the users. Again, ethics are on the table and the way the social networks are used by the companies that rule these platforms or even by third-parts is on display. In comparison, "The Great Hack" (2019), which explores the Cambridge Analytica scandal is way more disturbing on the extension of the damage that the social media can inflict in our way of life.
