Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
Lots of fun!
I don't know what's wrong with people. This episode was just a fun romp. Seeing characters that we know in such uncharacteristic roles is the perfect conceit. From Pike's quivering Chamberlain to La'An's operatic Princess, the cast jumped right in and threw caution to the wind.
I thought this episode worked so much better than Spock Amok. Everybody brought it from costumes, designs, and music as well as the cast. Spock Amok harkened back to TOS with its referential music and maybe that struck a chord with some fans and it wasn't bad but I don't think it reached the comedic level for which it was striving. This episode was just a delight.
Don't take yourself so seriously and just kick back and enjoy.
House of the Dragon: King of the Narrow Sea (2022)
High expectations, low delivery
I ran a countdown to this series starting the day they released a firm date. I went into it with very high expectations.
First episode, not bad; second episode, ok; third episode has a little action; fourth episode meh.
It is not because it isn't Thrones. It is because it isn't very interesting.
The writers do not trust us to have any deductive reasoning skills and have to spoon feed and otherwise telegraph what characters are thinking and doing.
The pacing is inconsistent. Action happened in this fourth episode that made us wonder, did the writer watch the first three episodes?
The play-within-a-play was not well done. The camera throughout that entire journey muddied up the scene enough so that we were asking questions. Usually I enjoy when a scene asks questions but not in this case.
My advice is watch it, but don't plan your life around it. It's mildly entertaining for a Sunday night, as much as, say, a sitcom would be.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
First Half Great, Second Half Not
The first half of this episode is exciting and well written. Then something happens and all the rules for the universe go out the window. Why set your characters up in a "can't escape from this" scenario if you don't have a believable plan for rescuing them? The dialog in the second half was plain stupid. "All that matters is Kenobi." WHAT? You just had him! This doesn't make any sense at all.
And then of course there is the obvious. We know Ben and Leia are safe because this is a prequel. They would have been better off introducing a new character, make us care about her, then put her in danger.
Six stars because the first half was a 10 and the second half was a 2.
Star Trek: Discovery: Die Trying (2020)
Could be great - have Burnham take a day off
So many nuggets in this episode, especially Michelle Yeoh. Why, why, why did Burnham just take over while Saru stayed behind? That made no sense unless it is like everyone says: this is Star Trek: Burnham, no more, no less. It's too bad because there are some good characters here.
A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story (1992)
Don't waste your time
The reviews on here make Meredith Baxter out to be a rock star. Maybe she was in her other work but not here. I didn't even finish this because of the terrible acting. The music does not fit the action either. Nothing could save this pathetic attempt.
Young Sheldon (2017)
Fun show with a fantastic supporting cast
As many others have said, Georgie steals this show. The other supporting cast members are all talented and funny.
Young Sheldon is truly an origin story and reveals from where a lot of Sheldon's neuroses and other hang ups come. Give this show a look; you won't be disappointed.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Has its problems but not as bad as many say
Discovery has its problems, just as other Treks do. However, it is not as bad as many of the other reviews have it.
There are some fantastic characters that with rich backgrounds. The problem with the series is that it feels every single episode has to revolve around its main character.
When it is good, it is superb. When it's not, it's because it is focusing on Michael.
