Kaala Paani (2023)
A Captivating Tale of Eco-Disaster and Humanity
Kaala Pani, the 2023 Indian Netflix series, takes you on an emotional journey through a devastating environmental crisis that hits the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It's not just another show; it's a powerful, beautifully crafted story that will linger in your thoughts long after you've binged it.
What sets Kaala Pani apart is its breathtaking setting. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, known for their natural beauty, come to life on the screen. The series delves into the real-world implications of an eco-disaster on this unique ecosystem and its inhabitants, and it's heart-wrenching in its authenticity.
The characters in Kaala Pani are where the show truly shines. It introduces a diverse cast, including a scientist, a local taxi driver, a government official, and an indigenous community leader. Each character is driven by their own distinctive motivations, and their responses to the environmental crisis are as varied as the islands themselves.
Visually, Kaala Pani is a treat for the eyes. The cinematography is nothing short of stunning, capturing the islands' beauty and isolation flawlessly. The production values are on par with a big-budget Hollywood production, making it a feast for your senses.
In a nutshell, Kaala Pani is a must-see for anyone who craves suspense, drama, and environmental thrillers. It's a masterfully created, thought-provoking series that will keep you pondering long after the credits roll.
The Office: Finale (2013)
A perfect Finale
The final episode of this show was truly exceptional, surpassing all expectations. Throughout the series, we were taken on a thrilling journey filled with ups and downs for each character. The depth of our emotional investment in these characters made them feel like an integral part of our lives. Personally, I developed a profound attachment to them, and witnessing their growth and development was a privilege. The finale, while bittersweet and poignant, left me satisfied and content with its conclusion. The handling of each character's story arc was masterful, even though not everyone experienced a flawless resolution, such as Toby, Kevin, and Meredith. Nevertheless, it is evident that they have found themselves in a better place. The surprise appearance of Michael Scott added an extra layer of joy and nostalgia to the finale. Although it would have been nice to see Holly as well, I can accept that. This ending was truly beautiful, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart.
The Last Kingdom: Episode #5.7 (2022)
An amazing episode
The writer, director of this show took their time to deliver us something very high in quality, be it in terms of story, the suspense, the direction, the editing, or the music. Everything they did this season is hitting home. Highly satisfactory for the viewers. The quality has only increased, it is sad that this show is ending but I am also happy that this season is very thought of and amazingly enacted upon. It is delivering what was expected of it.
Some spoiler alert ****
I loved everything about this episode. There were multiple intriguing scenes of people just talking things out. The conversation between young Uhtred and Uhtred. The scene between Uhtred and Stiorra. But the scene which really was a punch in the gut was between Brida and Uhtred. How I have hated this character Brida. But, by the end of this episode, that hate would be replaced by feeling pity for her, feeling sad for her, as well as for Uhtred. I never cried for a character whom I hated, but this episode made me cry for Brida and Uhtred. Such amazing writing and direction. The flashback scenes were so beautifully kept in between the action scenes, one can only admire the editing here. They were very impactful.
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
We will miss you Expanse
What a finale. Don't even know what to talk about here. I am just so emotional right now. This is probably one of the best finale I have watched after Dark and Breaking Bad. Many people were beginning to wonder where this was going, but the way they wrapped up this thread was so amazing. One thread is loose as expected and we all know about it. We got a lot of action in this episode. I love how every action sequence in The expanse is just so damn good. And the background music, it's so immersive and really sets the tone of any scene. I think BGM of this series is massively underrated. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, that's how good this episode was. Every member of the The Expanse's caste will be missed, Roci will be missed.
I really hope this is not the end of The Expanse, TV series, I hope someone picks this up and close the final thread.
Rest, it's been a bumpy ride aboard the Roci, but it was worth it.
The Witcher (2019)
Highly enjoyable, very entertaining
Before I start, I must say that I didn't read any books or played any of the Witcher games. Having said that, I watched this series afresh. Having no prior knowledge of story, or different characters allowed me to enjoy it to the fullest. I find this series very entertaining. Yes at times things doesn't make much sense, there loop holes, plot armours, some dull moments, but hey, who cares, I for certainly won't if the series gives me healthy dose of entertainment. In S1 I thought CGI were not upto the mark, but in S2, they have seriously up the ante. The story is pretty layered, a lot of action and a lot of Henry Cavill. Boy did he not essayed the role to perfection. The supporting caste were also quite good. All in all I enjoyed it a lot.
The Expanse: Why We Fight (2022)
Easily one of the best for this season.
For those who want just boom boom then you won't like this episode. It's a carefully crafted episode. Yes, at times it does feel a bit rushed, but then there are some really good moments, like between Amos and Bobbie. We have got enough screen time for our favorite characters, Avasarala, Drummer, Amos, Bobbie. Avasarala and Drummer are my favourite, every frame they are in, is just epic. Both are strong, admirable characters and when they finally meet, it was a scene to behold.
Enough buildup for the finale. Hoping that they would pull it off in a grand manner.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Book readers should just give it a chance
I don't understand many book readers. Why can't they get over books and give this series a fresh start. I have read the TWOT book series and I don't see how the TV series did a disservice to book fans. Just because things are changed in the show, doesn't mean the changes are bad. I liked the show. I have watched first 3 episodes and I would certainly watch the remaining ones. Instead of rating this as 1 star and bringing the rating down of an otherwise a good show is not on. Just keep your books aside and give this show a chance. This is an amazing show. Certainly deserves 8.5-9* but I have given it 10* because of this 1* rating. Come on guys, don't be so sore that you give it a 1*, you would discourage the new watchers.
The Crown (2016)
It's not the about the Glorification, rather realism of The Crown and The Royal Family
As the title of my review suggests, this series is not about the glorification of The Crown or the Queen herself, it's a story of the struggles, intricacies to hold the crown. It's about the justification of the Monarchy in modern times. The struggles of Britain, the interference of crown in it. The dynamics of the Royal Family. The sacrifices of Prince Phillip for Elizabeth.
Moving on to acting, every actor has done a superb job in essaying the role of the respective character. The writing was on the point, the dialogue exchanges between the characters were not the filler dialogues, just to fill the time, like many other shows, the dialogues are meaningful and have an impact on the story. The cinematography and the editing were amazing too, they created the Britain of whatever timeline they followed.
It's a must-watch series, must watch. I highly recommend it, trust me you won't be disappointed.
Carnival Row (2019)
Fantasy, Drama, Mystery, Magic, Romance and Politics
As the heading of my review suggests, this series has got everything. It's a must-watch for fantasy lovers. Can't believe it came under the axe of critics, but I found this series very enjoyable. It had everything in the right amount, the mystery, horror or romance. I felt that the lead character should have been given a bit more time to fully connect the audience with their love story, nonetheless, however it is, it works for the series. They mainly focused on the world-building, a lot more to come in the upcoming seasons, hopefully, the second season does come. Without giving away any spoiler, I found acting quite fine, the production value is great too. Some people complain about its darkness(setting), but I didn't find any issue with that. I was able to see every detail on my laptop screen, yes I had to increase the brightness a bit. The theme and soundtracks are bang on. One song will haunt you as it haunts our lead character, "I'll fly for you". It's my favorite from the album.
Concluding: It's a must-try series. You won't be disappointed.
The 100: Damocles: Part Two (2018)
Easily one of the best finale/episode
I have been following The 100 from the first season itself. Never wrote any review, though, but this episode was so amazing that I am obliged to write the review here. Season 1,2,3 were fine, interesting, but not so amazing. Some of the top rated episodes like "Blood must have Blood-part 2" showed us that the series have a great potential. Season 4 was amazing. I liked how grown up these characters were, how they were developed. You can almost feel for each and every character and can justify the actions they took. You can understand their choices, they were believable and felt real.Season 4 finale was awesome but the very ending left me in doubts about the proceeding of season 5. But the first episode into season 5 and all my doubts were gone and things seemed a bit hopeful. Episode by episode season 5 surprised us with its amazing story-line, brilliant screenplay, wonderful editing, cool action sequences, top-notch acting and extraordinary twists. The finale(5/13) is by far the best episode of the whole series and seriously one of the best episodes of television history. I just hope they keep on doing wonderful things with the series in season 6. And it is fine if they don't do season 6 also because the ending is just so perfect.
My Name Is Khan (2010)
khan juz blew everything by his acting ..........
how many times I watched this movie I too don't know. Every time with intention to watch some of the cut shots of the movie I just watch it full because I can't resist myself from watching it, only for srk's acting. coming to the plot MY NAME IS KHAN makes two strong statements... The first: B.C. and A.D. are designations used to label years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. There's a third designation now - 9/11. Post September 11, the world stands divided. Terrorist outfits continue to strike in the name of religion and the common man, not even remotely associated with these groups, is bearing the brunt. The world is not a safe place anymore.
MY NAME IS KHAN mirrors the era we live in. Not a day goes by when you haven't heard/read/watched news of terror attacks and innocents being killed. We live in turbulent times. Also, the movie states - and states very strongly, without mincing words - Not all Muslims are terrorists.
Karan Johar's cinema got more real from KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA onwards. In MY NAME IS KHAN, the storyteller attempts to make a social statement and succeeds completely. At the same time, it takes no sides. If the protagonist says 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist', it also exposes those who misadvise the youth with inflammatory and rabble- rousing speeches.
Karan's take on the issue deserves the highest praise, since a subject like this is difficult to attempt. Final word? MY NAME IS KHAN is Karan, SRK and Kajol's best outing to date. Do I need to add anything more?
Rizvan Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother (Jimmy Shergill) and sister-in-law (Sonya Jehan). Rizvan, who has Asperger's syndrome, falls in love with Mandira (Kajol). Despite protests from his brother, they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea-change.
When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they split. Rizvan is confused and upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a touching and inspiring journey across America.
Let me alert you. The story unfolds feverishly from the very start itself. So if you miss a scene or two, chances are you would've missed some vital links in the story. The fact is, there's too much happening in the first half. Although the narrative tends to get leisurely-paced at times, the wheels continue to move from one episode to another.
A number of sequences are endearing. For instance, the romance between SRK and Kajol is subtle, yet charming. But it's SRK's relationship with Kajol and their kid that's one of the best parts of the movie. Your heart bleeds when an accident occurs and their lives are torn apart. Kajol's outburst - first, when her son meets with a catastrophe and second, when she confronts SRK - are truly shattering.
MY NAME IS KHAN's strength lies in the fact that you root for Khan all through. At the same time, you are weighed down when he's in a vulnerable situation, especially when he's labelled a terrorist and thrown behind bars. You don't realize it, but the fact is that you, as a spectator, have already got entwined in Rizvan and Mandira's lives.
There's a slight hitch in the second hour, when SRK returns to Georgia to save a hurricane-ravaged hamlet. Also, the media exercise tends to add to the length of the film. Nonetheless, it's a minor hiccup that doesn't rob the film of its punch.
There's just one word to illustrate Karan's direction - exemplary. One of the finest storytellers of our generation, he deserves brownie points for deviating from 'Karan Johar brand of cinema' and attempting a film that knocks on your heart and stimulates your mind. With MY NAME IS KHAN, Karan takes rapid strides as a storyteller.
Shibani Bathija's screenplay is truly arresting. Shibani and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are noteworthy and many a times, applaud-worthy. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is awe-inspiring. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music gels well with the nature of the film.
When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this is his best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan, who has Asperger's syndrome. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Raj is passe, Rizvan it is.
Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could've matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol compliment each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It's a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress.
On the whole, MY NAME IS KHAN is a fascinating love story, has an angle of religion and a world-shaking incident as a backdrop. It not only entertains, but also mesmerises, enthrals and captivates the viewer in those 2.40 hours. At the same time, a film like MY NAME IS KHAN is sure to have a far-reaching influence due to its noble theme. I strongly advocate, don't miss this one!
