This movie needed subtitles as I could not understand most of what the actors were saying. I know this a period movie but in order to enjoy the movie I would like to know what is being said. You also have actors from places like Scotland speaking American English dialog from the 1600's. It's a double whammy. The father's dialog was the most difficult to understand. His deep deep voice only made it worse. The mother's dialog wasn't much better. I watched the movie again on Amazon Prime with the subtitles enabled which did help. Almost like watching a foreign movie. In the movie theater I did not have this option.
The only scary part of the movie was the part that involved the baby. I will not give away the details of what happens in case someone else decides to watch the movie. This isn't a "so bad it is good" movie, it is a "what was the purpose of making it" movie. The acting isn't bad. However, if you want to make an art movie - make an art movie. If you want to make a horror movie make a horror movie. The director tried to make an art / horror movie and failed on both counts.
The location shots was great, the only reason I give this movie 2 stars instead of 1 star. I would say this is basically a boring movie. It could have been much better. The movie's ending looked like it was tacked on just to finish the movie because the director / writer ran out of ideas.
