River's Edge (1986)
Somethin' else...
As Joan Cusack said in High Fidelity: Shocking! Just Shocking! it's strange how a film could shock you sometimes. I mean, it's a film. anything can happen, right? But this here is somethin' else. the setting of the film is such in the beginning that you're swept away but that normal, small town USA, "just nuthin really happenin" feeling just to be shocked and amazed at the events succeeding and the completely reverse and abnormal reactions of the characters. i think this is the whole secret of the film. even towards the end of it when you've slightly adjusted you're vision to the twilight nature of the story you never seize to be amazed at the audacity. And boy oh boy did the cast come through on this one. Mr. Easy Rider checked another good role on his list, Reeves not bad, and Glover touched the realms of the twilight zone he was in. A couple a good cracks in it too.("wasted that leg... What did i need it for huh?" - one a the most brilliant "stoned" chats i've ever heard). So yeah. Some people will tell you that '20 and them some' years will still make this as good as it was the day it came out. Have patience with it. it will deliver. oh! and i'm rating it just eight cuz i don't encourage degenerate scenarios like this one.
Max Payne (2008)
A massacre of everything that max payne stands for. Plain murder!
No use in using appalling words in describing the crime committed. To a film fan such as i, it's not very often that one of my favorite games as a kid(and one of the best ever made to this day, hear the critics) get boosted to the big screen. and when it does u hope for the best and even better. and then u take a look at the wreck that these money grubbing, blood sucking, with no talent whatsoever executive producers display in front of you. Jesus! I admit, wahlberg's expression looks very much like max's. but everything else is just another character. not to mention that they invented everything else but the characters and the locations of the original story. that story was so damn good, i've been dreaming for years for it to become film noir. now somebody will just have to remake it cuz this just will not do! and that is the sorriest most pathetic excuse of a lupino i've ever seen. God! THE FLESH OF FALLING ANGELS! ruined... i wish that the real max payne would just show up and put a slow motion bullet straight in the head of whoever is responsible for shattering such an opportunity at a master piece along with every max payne veteran's expectations. and no more Christmas cards for mark wahlberg
Milionari de weekend (2004)
worth seeing if you're curious
boy, this Romanian film industry is really starting to kick it up. milionari de weekend is definitely not one of the best movies we've had but it's worth a shot. and u can clearly see that it's the product of the new breed of Romanian filmmakers, so don't expect much. they're only beginning to work their way through the art industry. so far so good. the cast is really young and some of them are quite talented, but that is not enough for a good movie. as for the plot, after a about 20 minutes it's really starting to work. and i'll tell you something else. you really don't have to be a Romanian to understand this. And if u really wanna see an old school Romanian movie that's really great i suggest u try Filantropica.
Constantine (2005)
Great Film, take my word for it!
this is film is to be viewed from a comic book reader conceptionabout comic books and life in general. because if you take a closer look at the fact presented, funny or cool as they may seem, they're just plain stupid. angela dodson being a devout catholic that goes to church every Sunday and also a police detective that shoots people on a regular basis seems a little bit off doesn't it? or john giving the devil the finger while being hoisted onto heaven? no. definitely not to be taken seriously or commented as such, PEOPLE! it's a cult film. based on a comic book. and not even entirely(which has really stirred the buzz with the hellblazer community btw). but within these boundaries, i, personally think that it's one of the best. right up there with the dark knight. Sure, as anyone may have noticed, rachel's performance is outstanding. and too much at that. for this sort of film anyway. reeves delivers quite good one may say(despite all you phony critics out there that have nothing but contempt for the guy), i especially like the "one last show" grin towards the end. glad i caught that cause that was beautiful. need i say anything about the dude in the white outfit? a more suited actor for this particular vision of Satan is impossible to find. in 5 minutes of screen time stormare blew even little miss dodson out of the water. again surprisingly great acting. fan or no fan. you should watch this. the powerful actors and great skill on the filmmakers part come together using the strangest choice for a story, and everything just to make you feel like a kid again.
