13 Reasons Why (2017)
This series tackles important issues in our society young people face today, but..
I get the purpose of this series, it tackles the effects bullying and sexual harassment that teenagers face in their day to day lives through high school. The first season tackles a lot of those issues, but it's not 100% realistic.
I get why they had Hannah create the tapes, it's solely for the purpose of the narrative. This series is about a girl who committed suicide, and throughly explained why she did what she did. Realistically, these events, in the order they happened, the recording of the tapes, and her well thought out plan to kill herself, would not happen this way. People don't "plan" to kill themselves, but again, it was simply to fit the narrative of the story.
The bullying, the sexual harassment, and all of the tragic things that happen to people, do happen, and this should definitely pose as an eye opener for many. Especially when it comes to the school not doing much about it. But a lot of it is over dramatized. All of these events and occurrences happened to this one person, all at once, and everyone was against her, and she had no friends. It wouldn't be as dramatic as they played it out to be. This DOES happen, and multiple tragic events can happen to one person, but not to the degree as they show it, it just seems a bit over dramatized (which they show) but it seemed like everything happened to Hannah.
Also, her suicide, realistically, would be impulsive, not planned. Thats a big part that gets me. But again, this show seems more to get a message across and following a narrative rather than tweaking the small inconsistencies and unrealistic scenarios.
Overall, this is a good, attention grabbing series. It really wants to make you watch the next episode and figure out what happen, what made this all lead up to the end.
And then they made another season, and a season after that. this is where it takes a turn for me.
The series should have stopped art the first season. They wanted to condense intense scenarios happening to one person that would lead up to her death in one season. If they really wanted to continue it, they shouldn't have had Hannah kill herself in the first season, if they planned for more seasons.
The second season I will allow a slide because it's a continuation of the first season, but the 3rd season really lost me.
It seems like some of the events they have happen are more of things that teenagers would not necessarily experience. For one, I don't think buying sex toys and getting into BDSM (I.e. Jessica and Justin) is something that commonly happens in high school.
How they portrayed Tyler as someone who was going to shoot up a school out of spite and being sexually harassed, is not the reason school shootings happen in society.
How they portrayed Bryce feeling bad and trying to formally apologize and be a better person is DEFINITELY not how things happen in real life. This isn't a Disney movie where we all live happily ever after. How they portrayed Bryce, his character shouldn't have changed much. Most rapists live to think they've never don't anything wrong. Like Monty's character. Maybe he would live with a little remorse, but his 180 personality change is completely unrealistic.
Another thing that bugs me about this series is a lot of bulls*t that happens, and no one tells anyone. Everyone is all hush hush secretive. This would not happen. There would at least be one or two tattle tales or confrontists in this series, not the way they portrayed it.
I just feel like in season 2 and 3 they get really out of touch of what a high schoolers life is like. Thats where it loses me. If they make more seasons I will likely not watch them, 2 and 3 were a waste of time. And 1 was decent.
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
Why are movies for women so poorly written?
I, as a woman, watched this movie out of curiosity. I was never interested in it, but I want to see what the hype was about. I'm still questioning what the hype is about.
So the main character Christian Grey is a young rich corporate owner, yeah how likely is that? Considering all he thinks about is sex all fricken day. They don't really elaborate on his intelligence and wit that help him create the business he owns. They could've done that in 5 minutes but whatever.
Ok so let's focus on what the main story is about. The girl they picked for the story is the. absolute. WORST. Why would they pick a VIRGIN to somehow all of a sudden be interested in BDSM?? Literally she's in it for the money Mr. Grey somehow makes.
Those two things could have been different, and this movie may have been a little bit better.
Better Call Saul (2015)
If you watch it without comparing it to Breaking, it's actually really good
My whole thought is that, if the story progresses faster and he becomes "Saul Goodman" then the series will end. This is the time they can go in depth and touch on details.
You will still get the same visual appeal as breaking bad, but you get a completely different storyline. Jimmy McGill is trying to find his place as an lawyer, but also acting upon criminal requests. I'm just as impatient as everyone else to start seeing the flamboyant colored dress shirts and meeting the big guys (such as Gus). But let us sit back and enjoy the detail, without it going overboard. If I know how Vince Gilligan writes, it's only going to continue to escalate.
Everything Sucks! (2018)
Not as good as I anticipated
I thought it started off pretty strong. But slowly declined. Super heavy on cliffhangers which is annoying (I'm talking about the whole show, not just the very end) Luke's character developed horribly. He's the main character and I went from liking him to hating him. He was an overly annoying/controlling boyfriend and a control freak to begin with, considering he's a tiny freshman. But can't confront his dad? Sure, teenage hormones and whatnot, but all of these characters have a horrible sense of confrontation. It's bad and doesn't get the story anywhere. I'm not sure how Kate and Emalines characters developed like that, but I hated it, it's not realistic.
Overall I think this was a sad attempt to try to be like Stranger Things. Only without the parallel universe and a slightly different time era. I guess shows placed in certain time eras are trending (which I think is super cool!!!!) but this show was a disappointment of that.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Fantastic detailed story in a short amount of time
This show ended up being a lot better than I anticipated. And I absolutely love how quick it moved in a short amount of time. Rather than most shows leaving you suspenseful until the end of the epoisode, or even through two, this show constantly is on the move with excitement.
James reminded me of a "Norman Bates" type character. Which has developed in an unexpected way.
Alyssa is the unlikable character that becomes oddly relatable throughout the show.
The show ended the way it should have, I feel as though it can either continue on, or end right there.
Hagane no renkinjutsushi (2017)
They tried
I grew up as a hardcore FMA fan, so this was something I had to see. I don't have high expectations of live action movies, because they can't quite grasp the effects of an anime, but when it came to character appearances of a European-setting with an all Asian cast, they did pretty well.
I was pretty disappointed on the emotion of this movie, it wasn't nearly as moving as the anime, I feel like rather than almost following the original script with slight little plot twists, the story should have been written on a small segment of Ed and Al's journey, it wouldn't have been as rushed and they could focus on details.
I think Ed's character was decent, yet he wasn't as loud, rebellious, and mouthy as the anime version, he was too serious most of the time. Al felt really distant as a character, and when it came to characters like Mustang, there was a lost connection.
It would have been nice to see more action too, at least have an actor or stunt double that knows martial arts to play in the fight scenes, that would have helped liven it up.
Overall this movie was better than I anticipated, yet there were a lot of holes in the story, if they were filled/changed it would have been fantastic.
