Retro-surrealistic snuff rendition of Gulag as a parable
21 March 2023
Let me try to brief you of less known to the westerners features of this award-winning movie without spoilers: if you are wondering what kind of people could perpetrate the atrocities in Bucha and other corners of the world starting 1917, you need not look any further, your only challenge will be to not look away, as this is a masterpiece of different kind of snuff, where the gruesome is not graphic and loud but the untold, or rather - expressed via multimedia art.

While the majority of art-house is aimed at niche audience the topic so serious deserves mass audience, here the writers of "Soyuz 7" (space blockbuster based on real events) in collaboration with the editor of such marvels as "Dancer in the Dark" and successful Russian music act Shortparis, who have shot to stardom while keeping their underground roots, to produce an experience seldom found since 1990s: a mass-counterculture blockbuster similar to "Natural Born Killers" or "Naked Lunch"... you name it.

So, they've teamed up with Shortparis who are a successful performance act with a versatile history of antiputin protest and a desire to build upon their eye-candy music videos and ready aesthetics one can see in their flicks for "Govorit Moskva" released right before 2022 and up to "HOBOE HOBOE" which set resembles the "crazy credits" of "Volkonogov's" to make "Polyushko-Pole" the only ubiquitous sound-track of it. This eerie rendition of an ominous folk song dedicated to "Our great combat flag/farewell to drafted boy" sounds prophetic after February 24th of 2022, but is equally subconsciously unnerving as a track for grim ballet performed by young men in red/black "visual-key"-like uniforms as entertainment but resembling a dark ritual. And this ritual does render a vision from hell literally for protagonist, as it serves for viewer as a part of stylish picture of insane totalitarian society where the oppressed population toils under impending doom with everyone potentially a subject to death of unpredictable level of violence.

However, in order to see this, you will have to dive into the depth of contradicting Russian symbols where the visuals taken both from Soviet classics and recent art, are combined with decaying human side of life obvious in the buildings of seemingly recently refurbished former Imperial capital and puppet-like servitude of its citizens.

The first third of 2 hour long movie builds up conditions for protagonist to snap out of this nightmare consuming his soul in progressively horrible sins, and if you are tired of clip-like flicks like "Run Lola, Run" just watch a music video of Avatar "Bloody Angel" paying attention to its lyrics.

Then, the main character turns to seek forgiveness of his (honest at first) wrongdoings while being chased by ex-colleagues. Thus movie has enough plot to entertain the viewer while rendering the most striking episodes of non-fictional book "The GULAG Archipelago" by Noble-prize winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in the manner similar to other dissident writer Vladimir Sorokin. Interestingly, the latter was among first targets of Putin's repressions, and (similarly to this movie forbidden in Russia along with many others) has grown into writer of dystopian parables opposed to current regime...

Ukrainian Gothic trash for niche audience
8 February 2023
As this is the first ever Ukrainian comic book adaptation, I double its score, otherwise it is advised only for hardcore trash or Ukraine fans. The only decent scene is "werewolf's" transformation by the end, and the predictable plot is barely saved by a mildly surprising twist. The "evil returns" promise at the end kinda reminds 80s, but overall meagre 1 000 000 USD budget due to movie being completed during the war spells failure. Otherwise this fragmented work never delivers its promising premise: it's neither Sin City, nor Tarrantino :( If you are into best Ukrainian war movies, check "Nashi Kotyky", if period fantasy then "Infernal Guidon, or Cossack Christmas" as for historical "Escape from Stalin's Death Camp" (only non-trash listed here). For Ukrainian Ed Wood check out Lybomyr Levytski's "Tini nezabutykh predkiv" or other recent works.

The real sequel to "Bill & Ted Face the Music"
19 December 2021
This thrash slasher dark comedy about "American Black Metal" (not NSBM) band's show gone awry is as enjoyable for a rock fan, as the Green Room or "Bill & Ted" series, despite its lower budget. Haters can find many reasons starting with blasphemy, but I recommend it to you Metal brotherhood for many reasons starting with the protagonist's background, which I can relate to, and to Sisterhood as well, if you'd like to hang out with us ;)

So the flick is lacking 5 000 000 budget to make sound as realistic and captivating as "Green Room": most action happens during a Metal gig, but this is not used to the full. However, the original music is versatile and "true", and the Lyrics+Animation comic grindcore track during the credits is hilariously NON politically-correct in a very 90s way.

The mood is very metal instead, though I've deliberately not reviewed "Bill & Ted Face the Music" of respect to 80s hair metal and coming of age movies. And though there are some great vibes in this Bill & Ted sequel, but I'd rather see them watching or participating in this gig, instead of "Grandma's Incinerator", or the protagonists being their children ;)

Speaking of which, lead actors have played their roles OK: lady has appropriate character development (for a teenage flick), and the lad could be less placid in dialogue and overall more like "Hasher" movie, though he unleashes his passion "on stage" so this looks like deliberate behaviour.

Death'91 fans would appreciate the Nemesis' appearance and there are numerous homages and references to Metalhead culture.

Maleficent meets Mononoke
19 December 2020
How do you get a rating 1.5 times higher than Shrek and etc. 3D animations? This Irish Anime similar to another Celtic Mythology cartoon Brave does it. 4/5 for drawing from various classics from Maleficent to Mononoke, but huge pluses of beautiful aesthetics, watchability for adults and Irish VS English accents!

An eye-candy fairy tale sequel to Ukrainian legend
27 January 2019
Unlike the other reviewer, who did not make it pass first 12 min of exposition, where the mischievous protagonist is introduced with a few clues for the plot, I have enjoyed the flick completely, as then the trickster Edward is introduced and the action unravels. The only thing I've missed was the pace in culmination, where the airship could've been more dynamic, though I know it is not Mortal Engines ;) The animation is beautiful, love story is innocent and humor is subtle. I do not put much expectations into family movies since Shrek, but this one is definitely better than Ralph and most of the same similar stories since Brave, including the recent Ukrainian animation Stolen Princess, which went big in China. I had a pleasure of knowing some of CGI artist who went to Russia to create their animation boom, of bogatyrs and Masha&Bear and recognize the same mastery in this flick, though not sure, did they return or is it the new generation, one thing I am sure of - Ukrainian cartoons are promising. 4/5 because of lack of motion of monsters and slow pick-up though I've enjoyed Paddington... both parts.

Kusturica-2: the soul of Ukrainian village
19 January 2019
If you'd watch the prequels to Dzidzio's music videos, you'll see that his style and desire to excel on Big screen were growing over last decade. This tongue-in-cheek but very positive comedy is pleasantly different from many counterparts from Ukraine and its neighbors by being at the same time positive and entertaining.

Its portrayal of beautiful rural outback, where people are poor, but cheerful, is like the best of E.Kusturica's movies but without politics and the "sur-" affix to realism. It is a family movie, but with intricate sexual references; it is about the religion and smuggling roles in the borderlands' life at the same time.

The only setback may be the language, which is very particularly heavy on regional accent and even for a Ukrainian it would not be simple to understand, not speaking of translation... The score is undeservedly low because of strong competition from 40 other Ukrainian releases this year, but it is much better than most of FSU comedies, e.g. from Armenia, or Baltic states, which seem to enjoy the support form corresponding diaspora votes. I rate it 4/5

Ring of Kings
9 December 2018
LOTR/Hobbit meets Outlaw King. If you ever wondered why do the neighbors call this nation "Elves", or are into accurate historical portrayal of pagan/viking/wikkan/balto-slavic Europe you will enjoy it. Low-budget does not spoil it, the only drawback is unnecessary gore level, of a/m Bruce movie, which makes it non-family. PG-13 plague did not reach this land where parents can hand-cover the kids eyes I guess ;) so 9/10.

All the Latvians I know can walk straight into a shot of a Viking movie, but the best acting is from Aiste Dirziute portraying Lauga: she is magic every moment of her "Elven queen" screen time, while Edvin Endre is a likable sword-fighting action hero, evolving into a wise leader. Max is soooo bad, that even James Bloor's great effort is far behind the demonic intentions of this villain. If you are short on budget to get Anthony Hopkins, I'd rather suggest inviting a good theatre actor, than "Ike" from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel ;)

FYI Namejs is a real historical Duke (hi to Gedeminas'-hater), but the plot is based on a book from Tolkien times so I am hoping for a sequel... and you?

Propaganda of war between NATO and Russia?
1 August 2018
The trailer starts with the phrase "this is the war between NATO & USA and Russia". Can someone explain to me how any movie festival or connoisseur can take it as an art and not as manipulative?.. ISIS executions is obviously the next to expect from "director" Olga? As she is an obvious newbie, there is a lot left for her to go to produce anything even remotely watchable, but if you enjoy this kind, I'll recommend Osama Bin-laden's videos and the "Triumph of Will" by another lady who has actually outlived her demise :( On the documentary side, this will serve as a great evidence after the arrest of terrorists (including the mercenary depicted) and their helpers who pay money for SNUFF like that.

Fine entertainment, like Levitsky's Lombard also: a hour and half trip with your beloved one to a magical world.
8 December 2013
Made it at last to " Shadows of unforgotten ancestors exit was like back to vicious world: oops, magic is gone and there is neither summer, nor Carpathians ;-) This is actually the most important thing for what it is worth to go to a theater: a hour and half trip to fantasy world. Too bad it was not in 3D for the stunning special effects and sound. The only thing funny at first were formulaic phrases from teen cinema performed by good actors , not translators ;-) I wish Lubomir can collect the cost of production back with profit, but it was officially acknowledged that it does not matter since Euromaidan took the target audience out to streets. Say hello to high-quality Ukrainian film-making!
