Captain Fantastic (2016)
Great movie. But most reviewers here seem to have missed the point.
Very well crafted and acted film. And it's just short of a masterpiece. But most reviewers here missed the obvious: Ben is a totalitarian monster.
Kielyr explains the movie to us when forced by her dad to explicate Lolita. And Ben finally sees it himself in the end: "It was a beautiful mistake."
We Can Be Heroes (2020)
Actually a good movie. But you don't want your kids exposed to the "moral" of the story.
This is actually a fairly enjoyable movie. Understand, though, that it's a "pure" kids movie: no double entendre or snark meant for adults, not a complex story, effects are more cartoonish than realistic, and the acting is not a consideration. It's the kind of movie kids actually enjoy.
BUT...
The "moral" the story reveals at the end is pure poison. You really don't want to expose your kids to it. It's an extremely radical "Year Zero" revolutionary message.
Ugly Delicious (2018)
an inconsistent mess
This series started strong and there are a smattering a truly good episodes throughout the series. But...
The creators seem to not have known what kind of show they wanted to create. Travelogue? Celebration of culture? Political commentary? It's an inconsistent mess.
Any of those would have been interesting. All mashed together, though...not so much. The "woke" politics weren't particularly bad (if you're terribly bothered by them you're in trouble, because they're unavoidable these days). The problem, really, is the politics was terribly inconsistent and nonsensical. It was like a freshman year BS session in the dorms.
In short, this show was basically a series of random diary entries by David Chang. Inconsistent, contradictory, unconnected as a series. The show REALLY needed a strong editor that could bring something together.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
good talent involved here but they can't overcome the weight of the source material
I'm a big fan of dystopia and came to the show with the expectation that that is what I'd be getting. *sigh*
Dystopia, good dystopia at least, has a connection to the present and is a prophecy/warning of the possible future that could emerge given current trends and/or reveals something about the present by looking at an imaginary future that exaggerates some aspect of the present.
This Tale, though, is more fever dream than dystopian warning. The author's perception (assuming this is true to the source material) of history, religion, and the status of women today is so divorced from reality that the narrative world that emerges is too ridiculous to enter into with any kind of suspension of disbelief or even sympathy. It's like being asked to take seriously an earnest dystopic warning about the grave and present threat of modern France falling to a resurgent monarchic order enforced by Druid samurai. Just silly and the praise and accolades this show receives is utterly baffling.
The West Wing (1999)
the mainstream version of Christian television
Preachy. Simplistic narrative. Preachy. Very good guys. Very bad guys. Preachy. Christian TV? Nope. This stinker of a show. The acting is good but the writing is tedious, boring, and preachy.
Myths & Monsters (2017)
writing is a bit of a mess
It's a nice and diverse collection of myths and the host is a good presenter. The art is interesting. But the writing and editing are a mess.
Each episode attempts to tell several myths together under an overarching narrative. Most episodes, however, fail to clearly establish their theme or thesis and are more rambling tales with interjections from academics than an educational presentation.
