Ferocious (2013)
one location and a handful of actors
The role Kim Coates has been dying to play, I'm sure. Another bad guy. Joke. But seriously, this isn't the regular bad guy. Coates plays someone much more sinister than usual and he clearly has fun with it. The plot has the lead character (Amanda Crew) return to where she was born to see her parents. She's a famous actress and is doing a hometown appearance. The media is all over her. She plays for the camera. She's good at it. But later, she heads to a night club. She's looking for something and we have to guess what it is. It must be important, or why would she go there. I'll confess that I saw it coming a mile away, but there are enough twists to hold my interest. Some of the dialogue stuck out and bothered me. But other than that, I enjoyed the movie. It's small, with only a few characters. But I like that sort of thing. Where everyone has to use their wits to survive. Directed with appropriate tension and good acting.
Pacific Rim (2013)
freakishly huge
Everything about this movie is big. Ginormous. Bigger than life wouldn't do it justice.
I worried that seeing this at home wouldn't have the same impact, but the intent is still there. Giant monsters going head to head with giant robots.
Normally I'd scoff at this, but the director is so enamored with his love of all things monster related (and believe me, it shows) that you can't help but feel his passion.
There's flat dialogue, sure, but do we care? I don't. This is stylized action at it's best.
Black Swan (2010)
very well done
This is a small movie with big stars. I can see why the actors came onto the movie as the writing is very good.
Natalie Portman plays the lead character. She does it very well. As her suspicions and anxiety grows, so does ours.
These insecurities grow larger and larger as the pressure on her to succeed begins to rise.
My favorite moment is when she goes into a washroom stall to phone her mom, beside herself that she succeeded. Many things go wrong after this, but this moment alone, is beautiful.
The ending may be too oblique for some, but I enjoyed it.
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
decent watch
I don't know that it's something I would have paid to watch in the theatre, but at home, it was a welcome change of pace.
This is a slow one; but I like when they suck you in. Slowly.
The main two actors (leader of the cult) and Olsen are astonishingly good. Subtle and menacing. Because of the state of mind of Olsen's character, you're left sometimes not knowing what's truth and what is fiction. The movie is all the better for this.
I don't always gravitate towards stuff like this, but I'm glad I watched it. It's a slow one, but the piece as a whole is an interesting character study that's not to be missed.
