Worth watching...
22 February 2024
...only if you need to understand that even the best actors may have to make some really terrible films in order to develop their craft. The real horror here is that the film was ever made at all. Someone should look into this mess and try to figure out why???. Why did good people get involved? Did anyone actually think that this would make money? If t wasn't for the money what was it for? My god, what an embarrassment. This should have ended Bradley Cooper's career. He should buy this film and destroy it immediately...not put it on Amazon where people might see it. I hope everyone lost a lot of money.

flip of a coin

This is a fascinating mix of brilliant writing with deep and inspired insights into human character ....and...some unbelievably trashy plot structures and tactical moves. One can learn much about the law, and about the infighting of keeping a law firm running and the compromises good people make in their private lives to pursue a profession. There are great insights in to significant legal issues of our day. But so much time is wasted showing off how much the producers were paid promoting the wine industry. A lot of dialogue is churned in a bar. Many scenes and characters exist only to show off minority actors and chase the demographics. I am deeply frustrated how great writing is continually compromised by the business. Does anyone know how much they made in promoting alcohol?

Beautifully filmed, well acted but...
28 September 2023
Poorly edited. I think some critical scenes were cut either because they didn't work or in hope that the audience would just fill in the blanks. The story line gets lost many times here partly due to the decision to keep dialogue to a minimum. There is a fascination with the open possibilities of blunt dialogue that does not serve the story well. Torture, mutilation, sadomasochism, rape, and the threat of rape are major dramatic themes here, but the producers probably backed away from milking some of that for good reason. But it leaves a clear understanding of what happened and why open to confusion.

Beautifully filmed however. Trying to make the far west appear like the sands of Arabia in "Lawrence." It works.

This will become an important developing theme in future films. Should be compared to Ex- Machina.

essential

This may be a flawed attempt to incorporate some cosmological ideas into a narrative film that are impossible to deal with in film such as the many worlds theorem, quantum mechanics, and the resurrection, etc.. But the attempt is brave and nobel...and absolutely beautiful. I would particularly point out the sound design. Garland is, along with only a very few others, an essential director to watch.

Beautiful

This is a very small, but very smart perfectly made film. American viewers will probably avoid this as being to slow and not suffiently exotic, but it reminds me of Satyajit Ray's very best work. Don't pass this up. A filmmaker to watch.

Not worth a minute

The subject of advertising is interesting. But there is not a funny joke, set up or observation in the entire film. Nothing but cyncism and posturing. Nothing works. An embarrassment for everyone involved. I suppose it might be a study in 60's black hipster culture in NY.

sadistic
12 March 2020
Great scenic passages through Mexico, Senegal, Italy. Very tense. Back and forth editing style that sometimes does not signal time changes. But marred by some silly acting choices, and gaps in detail. The screenplay seems unsteady. Not sure the writer understand the drug business well enough. Overly sadistic. (I think this has been influenced by "Breaking Bad", but without the weirdness or humor that makes that series so great.)

wicked satire
16 March 2018
This is one of the most wicked little satires I have ever seen ..in any language. It reminds me of the short stories of Anton Chekhov or Evelyn Waugh. As an American viewer, it may require a bit of familiarity with recent social conditions in village India to be of interest, but the level of wit and detail of observation is extraordinary. It will make you completely rethink Indian cinema. Do not miss it. Brilliant.

Not for everyone
14 October 2017
This is not a film for the general public. If you are big Star Wars or Transformers fan, a horror junky or even the usual sci fi fan you may get bored or confused early. Alternately if you liked Koyaanisqatsi or Ex Machina this may be for you. You MUST see the first Blade Runner first to set up this world. ( It may also help to have a general sense of the major themes in western philosophy.) You have to pay attention and think through this one. This is for people who are inclined to see films as a legitimate tool to help imagine the future. Not sure if 2049 is the right date, but we are surely headed there.

I would not worry about the poor attendance or low box office returns. People will be watching and talking about this film 50 years from now and it is a good idea to see this film in theaters on a big screen while while it is possible. This is an exceptional film, unlike any you have ever seen. A real shock.

Alert: I have just seen this film for the second time (in 3D) I suspect that this film has been now shortened in the second week. Perhaps the studio is taking note of comments that the film is too long (not) and cutting sections while it is still in theaters. I hope this is an illusion of some kind.
